For me, the worst part about all that stuff in MGSV is that it doesn't even really go anywhere. Any build-up of Skull Face as a new and particularly horrific villain is kind of ruined by both the subsequent themes of Phantom Pain and the fact that he barely even appears in that game. If it was meant to differentiate the game from previous entries as the "darker and more serious one" then it was also unnecessary, as the gameplay style changes and the setting already did a decent enough job of that. It really does just feel like it's in there for the sake of being moody.

Farcry 4

- I already posted about the annoying DJ, but what's possibly worse than his random obsession with poop and butts is that his programming is seemingly busted. I was getting the "Ajay has liberated all of the outposts/bell towers!" message long before I actually did that, as well as the little self-aware joke about the hunting sidequest before I had even started it, and now in the postgame he still talks about beating Pagan Min and asking who will lead the Golden Path (even though I have now killed both Amita and Sabal. Very silly.

- The stealth in this game is a bit wonky. I wouldn't mind so much because there are usually a couple of options for taking guys out, but you can actually unlock a skill that lets you stealth kill from cover. I don't know if I'm just bad at life, but I can rarely get the prompt to trigger for this. Most of the time Ajay will just slash his knife at the air, alerting the guard and thus the whole base, given how things work in this game.

- I've never played Farcry 3 so maybe I'm missing the joke, but what even is the point of Willis in the story? He just kind of shows up for a couple of missions, is somehow more annoying than all of the other annoying characters in the game, then buggers off. CIA sucks I guess??

The pay-off to the serial killer sidequest is that you get to kill just a normal enemy trooper hanging out in a cave but I can't decide if that's bad or really funny.

I agree with the criticisms of Trevor. I would say that they were trying too hard to recreate the archetypal GTA protagonist of old, but I actually think it's a bit more calculated than that.

I've finished GTAV to 100% twice, on two different systems, and yet in retrospect I can't say I really enjoyed it that much at all. I don't think I've ever played a game that's more mean-spirited and cynical in both its attitude towards the player and the world it claims to "satirise". You can't really enjoy it as a good piece of crime fiction because it deliberately overturns everything that makes crime fiction exciting and interesting, in the name of... something, possibly just to show that they can mess around with sense/taste and people will still buy it. It meddles with the "pursuit of money" trope that's so central to the genre but provides nothing in its place, seemingly because it legitimately doesn't think anything can replace money, which might be a decent avenue to explore if it were at all bothered with it. This also has the side-effect of making a character like Trevor crazy for the sake of being crazy; unlike Tommy and CJ (arguably even Nico as well) he doesn't exist to commit crimes in order to try and fix the situation he's in, he's just there to make bad jokes/observations and to get under your skin.

You can't enjoy it as satire because it's so hateful towards pretty much everyone, to the point where everyone involved simply becomes a lumbering two-dimensional cardboard cut-out. Granted, GTA's humour was never subtle or even necessarily all that clever to begin with, but I think it was tolerated much more before GTAIV because it had a certain charm to it. It was lampooning rather than spiteful, somewhat more suggestive as opposed to painfully obvious and predictable. In Vice City, for example, you can enjoy the music and fashion of the 1980s whilst also laughing at that period's ridiculous excesses. In GTAV, and to a lesser extent GTAIV, there are no upsides to anything: people are idiots, especially you and anyone else insisting that they're not. The irony is that this is far from the fresh and original take they probably intended it to be, and instead it's actually disturbingly close to the sort of normalised far-right nonsense you now see regularly trotted out on Twitter and in the news.

Also some of the stunt jumps sucked and there's no jetpack.

I thankfully didn't have many issues with PS Now the last time I used it (I was actually very surprised that it ran MGS4 so well considering my Internet is nothing special), but it not including DLC in games can be a big problem. Games like Fallout 3 and New Vegas seem so naked without DLC now.

I think the white dots above certain people's heads either mean I blend with them or I stand out but I'm not sure. I think it means I'm in the clear with those dudes when the dot is solid but the game still seems inconsistent about it. It's a fun game. I just wish it were a little more clear about wtf is going on sometimes.

It's the latter, the solid dot means that that person is an "enforcer" and can see through your disguise (or you're somewhere you shouldn't be, or you're doing something illegal). An empty dot means that that person would be an enforcer but is incapacitated in some way and won't react to you, for instance, maybe because you just made them sick by spiking their drink.

Typically you're more suspicious if you run, and if you're not allowed to have a gun out visibly then it will be marked with a red ! in the corner. You can blend in with crowds (not necessarily all of them) in Hitman 2 and 3, and this is marked with a white circle around 47 and a note at the bottom of the screen.

Since you guys have kindly explained Twitch notifications (I don't get the appeal myself but whatever), can you explain why some some streamers do "raid countermeasures", which is typically a really long silly video that breaks up the actual gameplay? I get raids, it's a way of giving a stream more viewers but what are countermeasures all about?

They were not present in the original JP release and not present in the NA version, either. The Dark Aeons first appeared in the International Release, which was the first version to be released in Europe and the definitive standard for all future ports and remasters moving forward. The version history of FFX is pretty interesting because there were significant balance and content changes between editions, even beyond the Dark Aeons.

Yeah, the one that pops into my head is Quick Hit, which I think was massively overpowered in the original version? The rerelease changed how it prioritises certain attacks, so while Quick Hit is still super useful it can't exactly be spammed constantly any more. Or something like that, idk. I know a bunch of other abilities were added too, most of which are negligible and are locked behind multiple locks anyway, but I appreciated the "extract" abilities that made getting spheres a bit easier early on.

I think the worst thing about the Dark Aeons blocking stuff off concerns Auron's limit break. After you defeat Spherimorph, if you want to get all four of Auron's limit breaks while they're still remotely useful, you pretty much have to instantly backtrack all the way from Macalania to Besaid, just so you can pick up a Jecht sphere from outside the temple there. I imagine most players weren't even aware that you could go back to Besaid at that point, not to mention that the story is ramping up at that point so it seems silly to stop it dead in its tracks. Tidus' crest is obviously a dick move too, though I can't think of much else of note that's blocked unless you missed the temple treasure in either Besaid or Macalania the first time through.

Crusader Kings 2 is one of those games I should love, as I loved the diplomacy and historical aspects of Medieval Total War back in the day and I was really intrigued by all the funny screenshots people have posted here on SA. But I just kind of don't get it, it's overwhelming at every turn, and this is after I've looked through the tutorial LP thread for advice. There's an in-game tutorial, but it doesn't really direct you how to do what it wants you to do. Getting troops on and off of boats in particular seems overly complicated. I'll keep having a go because it's probably just me being an idiot, but overall it's just too much right now. At least it's free.

GTA has always done it because frankly they could get away with it, often under the banner of South Park-esque edgy humour, which has an appeal when the game is entertaining and is doing things that few other games do well. But GTAV in particular is such a cynical (some would say hateful) game, one that is outclassed in many areas by competing titles, that the audience antagonism is much more brazen. I played it to 100% twice because I'm a masochist, but I still struggle to find much pleasurable in it even as a long-time fan of the series. There is so much that is deliberately unfun: no payoffs to heists, having to use the stock market to make money, an almost entirely full cast of unlikable characters, self-deprecating sidequests, smarmy attempts at "satire", the list goes on.

I think Point Lookout was my favourite, if only because it was something a bit different. It still might not be better than the worst NV DLC. My only memories of The Pitt are that it was just depressing to look at, so much grey and brown. Broken Steel added in some good stuff, but indeed the beefed up super enemies are a massive turnoff; I liked the concepts of some of the new dungeons, but in practice they were just clusters of said beefed up super enemies and weren't fun to play at all. I concur entirely with your thoughts on Operation Anchorage.

Mothership Zeta is awful. It was clearly supposed to be "the wacky episode" using the humour found in the old games, but they forgot to write any jokes or include anything that might be fun. In the end it's just a bunch of empty corridors capped of by a bizarre retcon in the entire series' backstory.
