I'm going to piggyback on the light questions and see if anyone knows of a brand that will meet what I am looking for.

I am trying to replace my new bedroom ceiling fan's light and fan switch. It has separate lines for the light switch and the fan switch (2 gang box red & black + neutral), though I don't mind a single switch replacement.

The part that is giving me trouble finding something to match is the light is super bright when turned on by default, so I am looking for something that can change the default brightness to something lower (I don't think you can do this with Caseta which was the first one I was looking at). My fan doesn't have a pull, so the fan switch would also need to have speed control.

I would prefer something that has switches that look and act similar to a normal rocker switch. The last nice to have would be a physical remote, an app would work but is not preferred.

It's not a completely "normal" rocker switch, but i have been SUPER happy with the Lutron Maestro Fan/Light Control switch.
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Lutron-...MR-WH/203489683

You would have to put the control unit up behind the fan, but i was super happy with my 2 installs, and would(will) install again when i replace my living room fan next weekend.

The light and fan switch both have "last setting" memory.

High/Full is available as a double press of either switch.

Are those smart? I'm hoping to tie into Home Assistant for some control if there is not a remote.

Caseta instead of Maestro. My bad.

I've made the jump in, setup homeassistant in a container, grabbed a bunch of Shelly/Kasa bulbs and switches, and even setup my first two automations.

Tailwind for the barn garage door, and the soon to be installed overhead door opener is WiFi enabled as well. (Or tailscale for that and no to oem WiFi)

Now I just need to learn how to VLAN all this poo poo off the internet as a whole.

And then the 2x Emporia reflash and install.

I'm also returning the first set of bulbs I got because I didn't realize Wyze is cloud and not local only.

Don't know, haven't installed it yet, but it integrates with the Energy Panel in HA based on the last time it came up.

I think you and stevewm discussed it.

Finally got a Emporia Vue2 energy monitor installed on both of my electrical panels. Flashed both to ESPHome.

Really digging Home Assistant's Energy system. Works well with multiple monitoring sources.

Finally have some insight on how much charging my car really costs. I figured it was the biggest user of energy in my house, and I was correct. Also discovered my Plex/BlueIris server typically uses more energy than my water heater per day. (it is the "Bedroom/Hall" circuit in this picture.)

A lot of info!

Yeah I'd love to find a more economical solution - I have like 6 switches I'd like to replace.

The Kasa switches are only ~$11/ea for singles, ~$15 for 3 ways or dimmers, and $20 for the motion ones.

I'm slowly transitioning to them as I smarten the house.

I'm using the Kasa and Shelly equipment natively, without the app, directly into HomeAssistant.

I haven't put both on a single circuit yet.
I've got one kasa switch for some outdoor lights, and I'll be installing the rest shortly.

The only smart bulb + smart switch location I have right now would be the hallway light.
When I put that all together I will report back.

Frankly I wasn't sure how smart switch+ smart bulb is any advantage outside of 'oops the smart bulb is offline because the switch is off'.

Anyone running a local Tuya instance since their new firmware (new as of 2020) can't be tuya-converted/reflashed?
Seems easy/functional enough, but wanted to see if anyone here had good or bad experiences.

I see people post things on reddit that look absolutely stunning. Then I go back to my basic-rear end setup and cry.

I was just trying last night to put a clock card on a screen, because I want to have a display in my garage that shows time, weather, and a few other things. It seemed incredibly difficult to put up anything that didn't look like absolute dogshit... certainly nothing built in to HA that I could find, and there were only like 3 "clock" options in HACS, and none of them looked very good. Plus my HACS is broken and I can't seem to fix it for whatever reason right now.

Seems to me that it takes an absolute ton of effort to make good looking UIs. I've never put much time in to it, but that's partially because when I do attempt it I usually run in to stupid roadblocks that turn me off from it.

I got bored and started googling instead of working and found a few folks making videos/write ups:

This one is nice with example YAML for each card:
https://homeautomation.academy/recipes/creating-home-assistant-status-dashboard/

Mushroom appears like it might work/has a editor UI for each individual card instead of straight yaml hell
https://smarthomescene.com/guides/mushroom-cards-complete-guide-to-a-clean-minimalistic-home-assistant-ui/

This article talks about building a dashboard but no module specific info:
https://www.smarthomejunkie.net/take-back-control-of-your-home-assistant-dashboard-now/

This one is tailored for a mobile/tablet dashboard. (I have a Galaxy Tab A7 with Kiosk as a control pad, so relevant to my interests/guest use)

Edit: i made a (very) basic thing! but it works on the tablet in Kiosk mode :D

Hey does anyone have any recommendations for a grill thermometer that uses WiFi or something else? Most of them are Bluetooth so they lose connection too easily if you’re not outside with the grill. Extra points for one thats HA aware since I run HomeAssistant.

I haven’t even googled for it yet. I’m torn between buying one, and trying to create one with an ESP32 dev board, a battery, and a couple of thermocouples. I figured I’d see if there were any that people here liked

If you are code handy, you can use their API though:

The Thermoworks Smoke + Wifi Gateway will work however:

There's an add-on on for much nicer dashboards I have been loving with. Let me get to a real PC and I'll update this with more info. It might also be in my post history on my most recent "how do dashboards" post.

USB over Ethernet is fine and cheap and easy. Makes finding a good location for the receiver a far better experience.

It's how I have my zwave adapter connected for my deadbolt.

I've been pretty happy with a mix of Kasa and Shelly for local control.

Side note: it's a right pain in the rear end that only some manufacturers cover certain market segments. In this case the only smart floodlights/high lumen (over 1k) bulbs I can find are Hue, and I have zero other Phillips products. (Many of my switches do not have a neutral so smart switches are out)

Well, would you look at that.

The stars have aligned, and our experimental drag-and-drop feature for dashboards is finally here!

I haven't tried it out yet, but i'm looking forward to it.

In other news, my ThinkSmart Views arrived, and they make great HA interfaces for places like the kitchen and my office.
For $40, they're pretty nifty. Bonus points if you actually use it for Teams/Zoom

Network chat:
I have 4, soon to be 5 VLANs
1 5/2.4 for us
1 2.4, offline for IoT only
1 2.4 with no spaces in name/password for anything that gets weird about SSID/WPA2
1 10GB network for my server/NAS back end.
TBD: Guest open SSID

I think a couple of us are running Reolink cameras with Blue Iris for NVR with or without AI object detection/identification.

There's some website out there that will let you build a coverage map, but I can't remember the link.
