gently caress it.

Well we've got threads for the scariest cars and the rarest cars, but what about the totally average cars? The quiet, unassuming vehicles we get in and drive to work every morning when our RX-7s won't start again or the black widows that claim co-ownership are looking particularly angry that day? Everybody (well, every one in AI) needs a backup car of some kind to get around in.

All of my fun cars are dead currently, which leaves me with this:

Pictured with it's much more entertaining stablemates, who are both suffering from heart-failure and projectbloatitis

A 1999 Toyota Corolla in Maytag-white. Slushbox. Gray/beige cloth interior with that awful '90s fad of random squiggly lines of color randomly interspersed in the gray. Really the only interesting thing about this car is the fact that it has honest-to-god alloys and not hubcaps, and that it is still 12k miles short of 100,000. It puts down ~100hp and 90ft-lbs to the wheels, has a top speed of about 97mph (drag/power limited) and gets 32mpg if you don't flog the hamsters too badly. It's a Corolla, it practically defines the term "appliance-car".

It'll go faster than that, you just gotta stay with it for a looong time. Mine had a 5 speed though, but I think the final drive gear ratios are pretty close.

123mph according to the GPS, the speedo stopped at about 115.

Slow car you say?

Let me tell you about the silver Saturn Ion, and its ridiculously tall gearing. 3.84 final drive meets 0.69 5th, coupled with a rev-happy 2.2L, means 5th (and 4th, for that matter) isn't usable for anything but cruising and going downhill.

Upside: It's reliable and actually handles decent. It's just gutless as hell. Not quite Mercedes 240D gutless, but enough that I use 2nd and 3rd far more than any other car I've owned.

Although it didn't belong to me, I spent about two years using my great-grandmother's 1985 Chevy Celebrity as my daily driver (she'd had a light stroke and was advised not to drive anymore, so I got to use it in exchange for chauffeuring her around when she needed). If the poop-brown exterior and interior and cloth bench seats didn't bore you to death, the somnolent 2.8l 2bbl carbed LE2 V6 would definitely put you to sleep with it's utterly uninspired performance. The best thing that can be said about it was that there were always plenty of cheap parts at the wreckers. The downside is that when it finally took it's last breath, no junkyard wanted to take it because they already had more broken-down Celebrities rusting up the place than they could ever possibly part out.

They didn't call the mid-70's to mid-80's the Malaise Era for nothing.

I think the 5 speed helps out a lot, the slushbox just robs too much power. Lack of flat areas doesn't help me either.

Finally a thread I belong in!

I drive a 2007 nissan Altima with a cvt in dark charcoal grey, one of the most common colors for one of the top ten best selling cars for several years in a row. It's a very smooth ride since it doesn't shift gears and doesn't even sound like it's in if you're stopped at a light.

Say what you will but it's probably the most reliable car my family has owned and gets about 30 mpg. It's a boring family car but it was great for moving to and from college and hauling people around.

I'll see your crappy, boring, and (mostly) economical cars, with a vehicle that provides only some of those features.

At a whopping 20 MPG (in summer) with the AWD v6, the Toyota Camry equivalent, in SUV form!

The car itself is SO BORING, I don't have any pictures of it (or it's growing rust spots). I do, however, have proof of it's excellence at boring the people contained within, and a picture of the same color as the one I have.

The hood is black because the last owner had a car parked on top of it. The original hood looked like someone hit it with a bat 30 times. This is what I get for buying a car from a junkie who then had me drop him off to buy an r6 for his first motorcycle.

From getting my driver's license until 2013, I drove my mother's 2008 Honda Fit Sport automatic. A completely competent and mostly reliable (fucken' battery :argh: ) machine that was nonetheless not especially noteworthy besides its Blackberry Pearl (i.e. purple) paintwork. She traded it in on a Mazda MX-5, it held its value pretty well.

This was what it looked like when I ran out of gas with it and was waiting for rescue. I photoshopped the license plate number and location of a bumper sticker related to the college I went to, lord knows there's enough information about me in the wild already. :tinfoil:

123mph according to the GPS, the speedo stopped at about 115.

I've had 3 geo/chevy Prizms, 1995, 1999, and 2001, and a 1999 corolla. The prizm's were all 5 speeds and the 1999 and 2001 could hit about 115+, and the 1999 corolla was a THREE speed auto, and I pinned it at over 110. That 3 speed actually felt faster than the 5 speed's, but the manuals were so much more fun.

Why did I have so many? I bought more exciting cars and they broke so I always went back to corollas. The 1999 prizm had close to 400k miles when I sold her.

Now I have a fiesta st so I don't qualify anymore for this thread.

Now my girlfriends 2004 Hyundai Elantra auto might be the most boring car I've ever driven. It has a floaty buick like suspension in the body of a compact.

It's an ecotec isn't it? You could always find yourself an M62 from a Cobalt SS/SC. ZZP makes a 2.2 blower kit, but they're pretty expensive. I see the blower by itself pop up on craigslist occasionally for pretty cheap.

Is that a challenge?
You guys haven't experienced dull until you've experienced this:

Peugeot 306 HDi Estate in the slightly fancier 'Slightly Blueish Silver' as opposed to just plain silver, this isn't mine because it's so dull I've not once bothered to take a photo. Dubbed "Monsieur Tourette" because of the noise it makes when snorting ez-start (forgive me father for I have sinned.) Related to the 306 GTi which was a reasonable hot hatch in its day, but by the time Peugeot had wedged the furious 90hp diesel lump up front and the boot out back it became about as fun as a wet blanket. It's got angry eyebrow headlights but I can only imagine the effect on any drivers infront is to inspure pity as this thing screws up its face trying to think of something interesting to do.

Infuriatingly for a French car it has very few idiosyncracies, except the janky throttle position sensor and radiator fans that won't run if the A/C system is empty. This loving think just keeps thrumming along in it's own grubly French manner, quietly ticking up miles at a very sensible rate, achieving good but not spectacular fuel economy and transporting up to 5 regularly sized adults in reasonable comfort without being too flashy or excessive (the only thing in excess here is body roll.)

It's not fast enough to be fun but not slow enough to be scary, and with the diesel mill you can't even wring it's neck to pretend you're going fast because it falls flat on its face above 3.5k RPM. The absolutely bonkers in comparison Citroen Xsara got an intercooler and an extra 20hp, but Peugeot thought that a bit outlandish and instead opted for a non-intercooled version of the engine. If I send my boyfriend into shops on his own he regularly has to search for me when he comes out, because this thing just loving disappears into the background in a busy car park.

A friend of mine has one of these:

Regardless of where I go I see at least one car identical to his every day, which is impressive considering most fifteen-year old cars in NY are at the scrapper after having the frame and/or some drivetrain component completely rotted through. The only exciting part of its life was when he drove it around for like year and a half with a canoe strapped to the roof since he had nowhere else to store it. Not sure if it'll ever die.

If cars that I've driven only count, then there's my mom's old DD:

I see at least two of these a day, same color and all. When she traded hers in last year the dealer had four more exactly the same on their lot waiting to be purchased. The 4cyl. engine was gutless, the steering was incredibly vague, and it was obviously hell trying to find in a parking lot ... but it was strangely pleasant to drive, kind of like when toast comes out really nice.

Just like that one, red, with fog lamps. It has a 5-speed and makes 135 horsepower in theory and gets 32 miles per gallon on the highway. It has :krad: '90s three-spoke (well, six, but they're clearly three-way symmetrical) scimitar alloy wheels and a :krad: little baby spoiler on the back and a :krad: '90s oval stereo/AC console that is totally incompatible with any of the DIN upgrades out there, so I use a :krad: tape deck adapter to listen to music.

I actually really like it a lot and keep it in good shape and in return it's been an extremely reliable little car that's always ready to go when I need it to. But it sure doesn't turn any heads.

e: a friend of mine absolutely hates the wheels and thinks they're the grossest thing ever, but I kinda like them because they kinda match the ones on my motorcycle
