I went to use my Kindle for the first time in a couple of months to get it ready for Tuesday....and it's completely dead. I don't even know what to do now...guess I have to buy a hard copy. Does anyone know if you can switch a kindle preorder to a physical one?

Thanks for the help, it's sad I haven't ever read a dresden book on anything but this kindle. Amazon says it's shot because of the age.

I'm surprised they didn't offer to replace it for you or give you a deep discount on a new one. They don't really give a crap about the hardware, all the money is in the book sales.

Edit: Since we're on Kindle discussion, anyone know when Kindle preorders become available? I'd assume midnight PST but you never know and I haven't done a preorder on a Kindle before.

My kindle is like 4 years old and the warranty is well past due. They did offer me a discount on a new one but it wasn't a big one. I guess I will just use my phone to read on Tuesday.

I'm curious what Dresden is going to be doing with the money he now has, it's got to be in the hundreds of thousands at least from the diamonds, even though he didn't get the 2 mil from nick. Maybe he will buy a place back in chicago now.

I think he just said it was guaranteed to them so long as he made it out with his objective, which technically he did but I doubt Nick paid them.

I didn't understand the Blood Gate:

Why did Nic have to kill his daughter and not just anyone exactly? Or if it had to be someone related why didn't he bring anyone with that relationship? This made the setup at the end make even less sense to me since how did they know he would kill his daughter then? It was a weird scene for me since Harry "figures" out Nic wasn't actually going to kill anyone on the team. Why would he or anyone give a poo poo if he wants to kill his evil powerful daughter? I am guessing I missed a major point during it all.

It had to be his daughter because he needed someone he could trust to pull the lever to open the gate after Nic killed them.

Just a random thought about the Winter Mantle, the reason it might not be as effective on Harry is that most of the power is being passively used to amplify his wizard healing ability so there isn't that much left for him to actually draw on.

Alternatively he also keeps forcing it back down which might only allow small bits of it through. The realization that Harry is just unrestricted in use of his muscles could just be a passive by product of winters power and not the actual power up he received from Mab

On a tangential note, the nature of The White God confuses me some. Because the series recognizes that other gods, small 'g' exist, we've met like half a dozen, they're Nevernever entities just like everybody else. So, is the Abrahmic God following the same rules and is just obnoxiously powerful due to having three surviving (or more) religions acknowledging him? Or does Butcher just fiatting that in the Dresden-verse that Hindu, Shinto, Zoroastrians, etc. are all objectively not worshipping the right entity.

Well it has been established that one entity can hold many roles/mantles. What if all of those religions worship the same being using different masks so to speak.

I've been listening to the skin game audiobook and one statement from santa stuck out to me:

"There are four oeratives who could play one role Nicodemus needs filled in his venture." "Two of them are currently under contract elsewhere and the third is presently detained/"

Could this be the man harry communicates with that is locked up in demonreach? Another naagloshi scion like Gray?

You could do a mini series or something, but yeah, with how self contained each book is, it hardly seems possible to make a movie or long running series without fudging it somewhat. A show set in the universe maybe. A Paranet show would be neato.

It could be done with some creativity, make each book a certain amount of episodes in a season, so maybe do storm front and fool moon in a season, maybe 12 episode seasons with the mid season hiatus being a time jump to the next book.

You could mix in the short stories and expand them into episodes to fill out the run.

I was thinking the side jobs could be webisodes to keep interest going through long breaks, if you only do 12 episode seasons that is 8 months to fill if you have a 1 month mid season hiatus.

Give it one more book if you can, if you don't find something to like in the 3rd book then it's not for you. The 4th book is fantastic but if you can't get through the 3rd then you won't get hooked.

I'm pretty sure accusing the guy in front of the entire senior council minus maybe one or two (I can't remember, it's been a while) was plenty of precaution, and given the mind-bendy nature of the guy's work, Harry couldn't trust that he wouldn't hear him warning others about what he was going to do. Harry can hardly be held responsible for the guy dropping that much freaking mordite in the room.

I'm pretty sure accusing him in front of all of assembled wizards was to placate the factions who would think the senior council or the merlin were sweeping it under the rug to save the councils lap dog (morgan). The Merlin even brings it up in the conversation with Harry early in the book that knowing who did it (or didn't in the case of Morgan) means nothing, the proof to all the members of the council that it was someone else had to be irrefutable and that person must be caught or it would mean nothing and Morgan would hang.

Given Harry's personality it makes sense he would stand before everyone and produce his evidence at the trial to ensure all knew without a doubt whodunit and why it wasn't Morgan.

Dead Beat was good. Like, really good. It feels like the first book where Butcher stops world building and just gets to live in the world he's been building this whole time. There are elements from each previous book, and he gets to play with all the pieces he's wonderfully set up. Vampires, the wolf pack, demons, fairies, white council, etc., they're all here. It's fun, intense, exciting, and probably my favorite of the series so far. I had already decided this like 75% in.

And then Harry rides a zombie T-Rex into two armies of zombies led by dueling Necromancers.

I knew something with a T-Rex was coming from the image in the OP. But that didn't stop me from grinning and laughing like an idiot the whole sequence. It's just so...perfect. And cathartic, the way Sue just rips into the enemies he's been battling the whole book.

...I need to get everyone I know reading these books. They're so good.

Dead Beat while amazing is actually topped by a few books after it for me. Small Favor, Turn Coat, Changes just to name a few. The Dinoride really did kick start a crazy pace for awhile.
