The BBC have put up a cool feature where you can pick a World Cup XI from 110 players (10 goalkeepers, 40 defenders, 40 midfielders, 20 forwards) that they have chosen as the greatest of all time. You can access it here.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-27699398

In theory, once you have chosen 11 players it should show you some kind of stats on how your team is, and how it compares to teams chosen by some experts, but that part of the feature appears to be broken so far.

It is actually very difficult to restrict yourself to just 11! There are way too many incredible players and you will find yourself having to leave out some phenomenal players. This is the XI I ended up with, trying to pick based on the player's performances in World Cups rather than any other knowledge of their ability or their performance in other tournaments or club play.

Buffon; Cafu, Zambrotta, Canavarro, Moore; Matthaus, Jairzinho, Zidane; Maradona, Pele, Ronaldo

Anyway, now you can make your own World Cup teams and make fun of me for including Italians and Germans in mine.

You think the truth will set you free...
I've been boring and only picked players from the World Cups I've seen ('94 onwards).

Buffon; Cafu, Carlos, Baresi, Cannavaro; Xavi, Hagi, Zidane, Rivaldo; Ronaldo, Romario.

"In football, time and space are the same thing."
I too went for personal favourites, but including '90 for me, and it turns out to be much more defensively sound that Lawro's picks, and we'd smash Pat Nevin's lot.

Zengy, Cafy, Bobby, Maldiny, Marcy, Dopey, Gatty, Zinny, Hagy, Ronny and Romy

Oh what fun it is to see the Harriers win away!

It's not about winning, it's all about taking part:

Kahn; F. De Boer, Fachetti, Krol, Maldini; Schifo, Figo, Platini; Cruyff, Puskas, Baggio

Yashin, Alberto, Gentile, Moore, Maldini, Gazza, Matthaus, Socrates, Zidane, Pele, Maradona.

I just went for pure individual skill.
No wingers, not much in the way of shape but gently caress it we'll Hollywood our way to the World Cup.

I was going to do a Stoke XI but the selection is crap and too limited. Broken Britain.

You can't even make an England/Britain XI, there are only 7 players to choose from.

No Socrates :(

Also, beaten 1-0 by a team with loving Lineker and Puyol in it, as loving if.
