Update 9/14: Updated episode list and removed earlier speculation.

:siren: Update 7/9. This is a new game plus run. If you haven't watched the first anime :frogout::siren:
https://www.hulu.com/persona-4

Update 7/9: Added PV2

In the summer of 2011, an anime was created based on the game Persona 4 for the PlayStation 2. At the same time, a new game was announced: Persona 4 Golden an enhanced remake of Persona 4 for the PS Vita. The anime aired and while it had its problems, many people enjoyed it. This year 4 Pesona games are coming out, so what better way to promote them than making an anime of the most popular game in the franchise?

Persona 4 Golden The Animation is being treated as a second season of the original anime in the guise of a new game plus run. Aside from the first episode, it doesn't tread on anything covered in the first anime. Most of the episodes center around the character Marie, a controversial character who was added to Persona 4 Golden and integrate her into the added events for Persona 4 Golden. Other than that, it's just more Persona 4 the Animation complete with crazy Yu antics.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Persona 4 story: Yu Narukami arrives in Inaba to live with his uncle and the very next day a serial murder case starts. Through a series of events, he and his friends figure out that a TV show that only airs at midnight on rainy days (The Midnight Channel) shows the next person to be killed. It turns out there's a world inside the TV that allows a person's inner self (shadow) to manifest and kill its host. Yu learns he has the power to go inside TVs and through several more events he and his friends awaken to a power called Persona that allows them to fight shadows. They form a team to investigate the murder, form bonds with one another, reveal the true killer, then kill a god.

Characters:

Yu Narukami
The main protagonist of the story, he has to move to Inaba for a year to live with his uncle because his parents took a job overseas. He awakens to his Persona shortly after arriving in town and becomes the leader of his friend's investigation team.

Marie
The first girl Yu meets after getting off the train. She's a new addition for Golden and will probably be the focus of a few episodes. She's also very controversial among players of the original Persona 4.

Yosuke Hanamura
He's also from the city, having moved in a year ago when his dad was transferred to manage a store called Junes. He calls himself Yu's partner.

Chie Satonaka
A girl who likes Kung-Fu movies and exercise. She is always training. Her best friend is Yukiko.

Yukiko Amagi
The only daughter of the Amagi family and presumed future owner of her family's inn.

Kanji Tatsumi
A first year student. He is a delinquent and even took out a biker gang.

Teddie(Kuma in Japan)
He lives inside the TV world and serves as the group's guide, identifying enemies, and finding missing people.

Ryotaro Dojima
Yu's uncle and caretaker. He works as a detective. Ryotaro is frequently away from home doing police work.

Nanako Dojima
Yu's cousin. Her mom died in a car accident when she was little, so she takes care of the housework.

Tohru Adachi
Dojima's partner at the police station.

How do I watch it?
There will be a total of 12 episodes. According to the USA website, it will air Thursdays starting July 10th on the following sites:
Aniplex
Hulu
Crunchyroll
Daisuki

If you're interested in watching the first series, there are a few options:
https://www.hulu.com/persona-4
Hulu
http://www.amazon.com/Persona-The-Animation-Complete-Collection/dp/B00I462XXO
DVD & Bluray (Japanese voices are only on the DVD version due to licensing issues)
The Complete Collection DVD is the cheapest option right now.

I never got around to finishing the first anime, because while I liked pretty much all of the comedy and normal day-to-day material the actual persona battles and serious story stuff just made me wish I was playing the game instead.

As for this anime, I still don't really see the point, but if it at least has some higher production values it should have the possibility of being an overall improvement over the first attempt.

My favorite episodes to rewatch out of the first anime are the summer vacation and school trip episodes, so I get where you're coming from. Maybe this time around they'll actually focus on the character being rescued and not just have a Pokemon battle.

My final form.
So this is an entirely new anime based around essentially the exact same plot? Was the original show bad or something? I only watched the first couple episodes, but it seemed fairly faithful to the game.

Milk's on them.

The only way I can see this working is if it really is a New Game+.

Assume that Yu's gotten to the true ending of the original game, much like anyone who played the original did. In Golden, he's got a chance to do it all over again: he knows what happens, he can prepare for bosses and social links, and he might even be able to change or outright prevent certain events from happening. Armed with this information, he gets off the train, totally confident and ready for everything - and he's almost immediately caught off guard by the first thing that's different in both the Golden anime and P4G itself: Marie. Who is she? She wasn't there last time. What else could have changed?

I really, really hope they go with the NG+ idea because this idea has a shitload of potential. The PV certainly does seem to hint towards that with Yu's expression - and it can't be a retcon of Arena or anything, because it's spring. Why else would they show the ending at the beginning?

Pleaaaaase let it be something like this. It would be so loving cool :(

If they aren't doing the NG+ option, I wonder if they're just feature the stuff added in from the remake and blow past most things that the first anime already covered. The first anime barely managed to cram in everything from the original game as is and still had to release the true ending as an OVA since they had no space left. Unless this is a three cour or more, I can't imagine how they're going to do a straight adaptation that includes the remakes content without skimming.

The animation quality was pretty subpar and the true end OVA was bad from what I remember, but it was a good adaptation especially compared to most video game adaptations. The real reason is Atlus just wants to milk the Persona cash cow for all it's worth. It's gotten so far: a remake, two fighting games that crossover with P3, a first person dungeon crawler spinoff that also crosses over with P3, two stage plays, a phone game, concerts (with other persona music), some manga/light novel spinoffs, two animes, and a movie (which is just a recut of the first anime + true end ova spliced in). And well plenty of other merchandise. It's pretty excessive at this point.

How did this smug dummkopf ever make general?

As long as they have an episode as good as the original anime's Nanako stalking Yu as he goes through his social links, while wearing a magical girl detective outfit this will be a good show.

If Yu isn't the awesome deadpan himself (at least to a degree) as he was in the "original" anime, I'm disappointed. I know it isn't "canon" per game as the game doesn't really go into the protagonist's personality that much as far as I know, but it was a neat way of handling the silent game protagonist -issue.

I would contest this, actually. Besides the hugely over the top King's Game, pretty much everything Yu does in the P4 anime is a dialogue/action option in the game. You definitely get a sense that his canon personality is the goofy, serious business deadpan that we got in the anime.

The black sheep is P4 Arena, where he's just sort of boring.

You still see bits of the goof come out in Arena. He pokes some fun at Yosuke's nurse porn stash. The thing is, Arena is mostly in the TV world, where Yu needs to put on his actual serious face.

That's my interpretation, anyways.

Yu's shadow appeared in the first anime a total of 10 seconds and they're using that to make his shadow from what I saw of its win quotes.

Actually, that would be kind of neat to actually have Yu face his shadow this time around (although the mind trip in the Mitsuo episode could have been that as well.)

Edit:

I'm pretty sure this image that just came out in Persona Magazine is from the anime.

They also seem to not be following the "Copy Soejima's character shading 1-to-1" edict that the first anime had to abide by. Seriously, that was a dumb idea and I'm glad the new staff are not doing that.

Granted, they could easily blow the budget on something else, so let's not quite jump for joy yet.

I saw that one too, but it would be neat if they actually focused on Yu for an episode instead of it being a bit during a battle. It's what they're using in Persona 4 Arena as well, so we'll probably see the stacks of TVs shadow at some point.

More or less, yes it was. Granted, the first anime's staff never explicitly said that's what they were going for (to my own knowledge), but if you look at Soejima's character designs for the original game and compare them to how everyone looked in the anime, it becomes rather obvious.

Of course, the staff were all over the goddamn place (and then some) with adapting the designs, resulting in about 60% of the show looking off-model.

Which is strange, from what little I know, I doubt Soejima really cares about someone using a reddish-flesh to a light-flesh gradient going down some one's face. It's not even that prominent in the original!

I agree with your post. A NG+ run where things don't go they way they are supposed to (new golden content / marie / ban ending?) would be the only way to make this worthwhile.

Sadly I bet we're in for like 26 episodes of Marie being annoying. I don't really know her character in detail bacuse I've only played vanilla P4, but everything about her seems like bad fanfiction, from her mysterious past, to her lovely attitude that people like her in spite of, to her weird, aesthetically clashing character design.

Although to be fair I might just hate poets and poetry

You're pretty much right. Of all of the additions in Golden her's is one of the weakest, though it does arguably make the flow from the December events into the True End a bit smoother. That said, the level of vitriol some fans seem to have for her is honestly really weird. She could have probably been integrated a bit better but you could say the same for a bunch of other S. Links as well. Save that hate for Links that actually deserve it, like Gourmet King in P3.

All you have to know is Adachi has more character stuff to go through and it's all great, almost half of it is near the end of the story though. Also, I hated that the previous anime was trying to be SUPER ACCURATE with all of the S. Links and stuff. That was just a ton of episodes dedicated to random poo poo that could've been covered very quickly with anyone else.

The way I see it, this anime could actually make Marie work since it's not literally P4 with some new scenes haphazardly thrown in.

Though it would be hilarious if this anime was shot for shot the original, just redrawn and with some new scenes haphazardly thrown in.

I fully expect if there's anything to do with Persona 5, it will be a short scene after the credits of the last episode and then CHAIRS.

Because at this rate, Persona 5 will just be one long giant introspective sequence like the 2nd disk of Xenogears.
