And just to be clear even the most religious cemetery will put someone in a vault, casket or not, there's zero health risk.

You know what there IS a health risk in? Not having a facility Muslim citizens feel respects their traditions and thus causing them to do as Dahn said and invoke the law that allows them to just take the body on a 'yea don't worry we got this here's the death certificate' and possibly not having a professional handle it!

Why it's almost as if cemeteries exist FOR the public health or something!

It's not even the "rape in bathrooms" deal, it's just that now they're saying "Well now you can't claim to be a woman to get into women's bathrooms one day, then change your mind the next!"

But I CAN. I can just walk into a women's bathroom whenever I want! There's no loving Toilet Cop stationed out front saying 'woah, lemmie see if you got a dick or not' that the HERO poo poo would have had executed in the street! I knew it covered a lot more than that, but everything was focused on that one part that got the highly religious conservatives to fight it as opposed to also allowing local protections against discrimination to other groups.

Yea to be clear for non-Houston guys, the one of the awesome ads we were up against was a little girl going into the bathroom in scary black and white, a dramatic voice saying MEN WILL BE ALLOWED INTO THE BATHROOM and then it ends with a big dude standing in front of a scared little girl. Yeah and these are all problems with HB 1690, the legislation that stripped the Travis Co DA of the PIU. It has nothing to do with the residency requirement measure, they were separate unrelated bills.

Also the only officials affected by the requirement are AG, Comptroller and Land Commish. The Supreme Court, Governor and Lt. Gov all still have to live here.

Here's the change:
The Comptroller of Public Accounts, the Commissioner of the General Land Office, the Attorney General, and any statutory State officer who is elected by the electorate of Texas at large, unless a term of office is otherwise specifically provided in this Constitution, shall each hold office for the term of four years. Each shall receive an annual salary in an amount to be fixed by the Legislature, reside at the Capital of the State during his continuance in office, and perform such duties as are or may be required by law. They and the Secretary of State shall not receive to their own use any fees, costs or perquisites of office. All fees that may be payable by law for any service performed by any officer specified in this section or in the officer’s his office, shall be paid, when received, into the State Treasury

This is basically what made me vote the way I did. The issues with this are because of an unrelated terrible legislation, and if this rightly bothers you should be fighting that rather than the piddly crap 'no you have to live in Austin' stuff.

No there's plenty of reasons to never do anything in Houston that requires moving large amounts of people, but I do think it's reasonable to say what bumped us from a 'eh I'm not sure about them' slot to a 'nevermind let's not go with them' is the lovely optics of stomping out what a lot of other places in America consider a basic equality bill. I'm sure we weren't high on the list to begin with and it's not like as soon as HERO got hosed someone burst into the office going "BURN THE HOUSTON SIGNS QUICKLY" but I think it could be a factor that makes us unpalatable to do business with, especially if this poo poo catches on in a bigger way.

But yea, it's speculation at this point for the college thing, I just think that's a much more reasonable thing to speculate. Regardless I agree that Parker is right and this is just going to hurt us in the grand scheme of things.

Scalia's got some hot takes on the UT case

quote:

There are those who contend that it does not benefit African Americans to get them into the University of Texas, where they do not do well, as opposed to having them go to a less-advanced school, a slower-track school where they do well. One of the briefs pointed out that most of the black scientists in this country don't come from schools like the University of Texas. They come from lesser schools where they do not feel that they're being pushed ahead in classes that are too fast for them.

I'm just not impressed by the fact the University of Texas may have fewer [blacks]. Maybe it ought to have fewer. I don't think it stands to reason that it's a good thing for the University of Texas to admit as many blacks as possible.
