First touch: Life.
Second touch: Dead again. Forever.

Based on the novel by William Brinkley, The Last Ship is about the crew of the naval destroyer USS Nathan James, who had been away at sea for months on a weapons testing mission while a deadly virus killed off 80% of the planet. Now, mankind's best chance is now in the hands of the men and women aboard the USS Nathan James.

Yeah, he was the worst part of the episode I thought. Well, maybe him and the horrible evil bad guy plant. Why does ever show need one of those now? I laughed when the crew was assembled for the bad news/super inspiring speech from the captain and then the show skipped right over it. I bet they filmed it and the actor couldn't deliver so it was cut.

I didn't know Michael Bay was involved until this thread. I also didn't know that mother loving Jayne Cobb was the XO either. Those things kinda balance out at least.
Uhh, they kinda explained everything to the captain so why would you waste like 3+ minutes telling the audience again about the dumb plague?

edit: was it just me or did anyone else notice Adam Baldwin is balding

There was already a nuclear sub drama last year and it was terrible so they probably avoided it on purpose.
Well, it's based on a novel, so blame the guy who wrote the book!

Also Last Resort was good if not great when it had to be. I'm still confused how a Shawn Ryan military-themed show ended up on ABC of all things.

The second episode was pretty action packed and well paced. Pretty drat good overall. I wouldn't say it was like BGS's "33" insane level of quality but glad to know they didn't blow their entire budget on the pilot and peter out.

They kinda described it as a recently dead infected body can spread it, anyone who gets it is a carrier and will die, somehow though, despite it being airborne you are fine out in the open, it's just in cramped quarters (e.g. the ship itself) it's deadly.

They probably didn't want to reveal their true position and get themselves fired on by the Russians in the process, the Russian ship's weapons systems weren't damaged by the blast.
I dunno, the Russians probably would've just turned tail for another day. You can't risk shooting at the ship with all the stuff you want on it.

Nobody is going to poo-poo that whole 4 feet of aluminum foil equals destroyer on radar part? That for me is more of a sticking point then why or why didnt they fire on the Russians.
I'm sure someone is gonna :spergin: all about it soon but honestly it was part of their plan so if it wasn't going to be "duct tape aluminium to some poles" they would've just done some other "spoof radar signature" trick for someone to :spergin: about and say they did wrong and how the Russians should be the real protagonists of the show because :ussr:

I rather liked it. It started off a little weird (why not have the power blow out before the title sequence?) but I didn't mind it was pretty much a bottle episode for the most part. Good way to set up the different character relationships and all for the most part moving forward. (Tex is a blast to watch). Dunno if I liked the flashback, seemed a little pointless overall just to pay off that one bit of that scene.

But I'm sure that's enough. Can't wait for the :spergin: to begin.

I'm quite enjoying this for what it is and most of the techy errors go right over my head except for one small little thing. Unless I'm mistaken they seem to be measuring the vital temperature of the super essential scientific samples in Fahrenheit. I'm pretty certain that not even American scientists use Fahrenheit. Does anyone know what the US Navy uses? Stupid thing to be annoyed about but every time they mention 41 degrees it jars.
Yeah that was weird but I assume they were just writing for the audience. Last I checked, American scientists/army/navy/aerospace/etc also all use metric like the rest of the civilized world.

Holy gently caress, this episode is even worse than the last one. I mean, I knew going into this that this wasn't going to be the book, but Christ, these characters, their motivations and their development arcs are pretty much entirely nonsensical.

What was the problem?

Hmm, interested in seeing where it goes now that they have been renewed for season 2. But either way it looks like they're in the home stretch. Last Sunday's episode was alright, nothing too fancy really. Next week is the finale though.

Cops seizing an entire Navy ship? hahahahaa
I think the guy up at the bridge said there were some other state troopers (that they decided to mention but not show on the ship), so I assume they all got taken by surprise or something. Which is odd because I would assume they would make even the cops confiscate their weapons on the way in or someone would be in the armoury (I guess none of the named characters were though, so...)

I don't know what their plan is other than take the goods and then ... sink the ship? Wouldn't you want a destroyer though? Too bad you have to basically murder the entire crew and staff it with a new one with what training?

Evil government was kinda over the top but I guess I haven't heard the Black Plague used as a rationale so I guess that was original enough.

GaussianCopula posted:

I dont really get why they are so mad about killing infected people (who will die anyway). If that stops the spread of the infection it might not be the worst idea. Additionally how does the socio-economic status help you in anyway, as "mom's" speech implied? Or are they giving the fake cure/vaccine to healthy people too? The guard said that Olympia was only for the sick so in my book everyone in there was already as good as dead before they got the lethal injection.

It's fun that the Navy is super cool with some state cops being the bad guys, who have to be defeated by the superior forces of good (the navy). I guess making them army guys would have been against some internal Pentagon rules.
Mom was basically all "well the Black Plague killed indiscriminately, but I will make sure civilization continues on because we have the foresight of something like the bubonic plague" and "well if you aren't important to society at least you can be fuel".

Are people still seriously hung up about Lost and Heroes? People know better now (for the most part) than to pull the poo poo they did back in the day.
