Hello and welcome to this Match Day Thread! Today we have the last two matches in the round of 16.

The first game is Argentina vs Switzerland

Both teams have great forwards and horrible defenders so you'd hope for a lot of goals. Can Messi keep scoring? Can Shaqiri and his friends cause an upset? Argentina were very unconving in the group stage, but they won all their matches anyway despite having more problem than expected. They're still the favourites.

The second game is Belgium vs the United States of America

Both teams are ridiculously overconfident that they'll win. Will it be the collection of amazing players from Belgium that have not lost an important match in the last 2 years, scoring 22 goals and only conceding 5 goals in those 13 matches? Or will it be the team from the USA that already got further than anyone expected and which scored 19 times and conceded 12 times in their last 13 important matches? Nobody knows (yet)!

~~Argentina~~ Belgium were very unconving in the group stage, but they won all their matches anyway despite having more problem than expected. They're still the favourites.

Let's hope not all Belgium's matches are boring and that jozy plays and that everybody has a whale of a time.

I hate to say it but there are lots of good american beers these days. There are some lovely IPAs, Goose Island, 312, Brooklyn Lager ain't bad plus there's a myriad of small brewhouses putting out an interesting range of often quite strong beer.

Also Belgium has more to offer than Stella, get on TrappistTech

If internet rumors are to be believed, and I so desperately want to believe them, Irmatov of UZB was originally pencilled in for this but Argentina told FIFA they could f/r/o with that assignment. So instead they get the Swede. Eriksson is a TRP favorite in that everyone here pretty much hates him and his officiating style. On the other hand, UEFA/FIFA love him. I've heard him likened to an airplane pilot: it's not always a smooth ride, but he always lands the plane. Especially with the "no cards" directive that must have been handed out after seeing so many tactical fouls go unpunished, he fits right in. So far this Cup he has been on Ghana x USA and Cameroon x Brazil. I expect he will get another match, although it might only be as a fourth official.

The Algerian has been on Australia x Netherlands and Costa Rica x England. For those playing at home, that means he gave a questionable-at-best penalty in his first match and his second was basically a dead rubber. Overall, he was alright in those two matches so, on the one hand, we could have Irmatov again, but on the other this match will be a lot more intense than his first two. I don't know much about his credentials (he had the CAF Champions League final in 2012 and the African Cup of Nations final in 2013 but that doesn't much to me because I don't know the quality of play), but I think he'll be fine. The USA manager is in the press trying to play SAF and game the referee, I'm gonna hope that doesn't backfire.

I love the USAMNT. It's my favorite sports team in the world.

Same, except I do kind of want Argentina to go out in abject humiliation so maybe I do care a little.
