And it's exactly the same way for games where the main character is created by the player; it's just that that character happens to be made up by me rather than by the game designer or franchise owner. If you're really looking for a lack of empathy I'd look to the people who can't relate to a character without investing their own personal identity therein. But it's just dumb video game characters so don't do that either.

I like playing as characters who aren't supposed to be me, but i still always play as female characters anyway simply because i like women more than men in general. So my first post in this thread still stands i guess.

Not much positive female representation in gaming and when there is there's more often than not a catch. NuTomb Raider makes you deal with some torture porn and a creeper boss fight before you get to have a grenade launcher and poo poo talk at the enemy. Really I'm just tired of male protagonists doing their best solid snake voice narrating their generic tale of revenge.

i am a girl and enjoy playing as a girl (as was already stated rip). i appreciate the option when it's there even if the game is otherwise lovely (hello bioware) it's rly weird that some nerds froth at the mouth when girls ask for girl options when the character is a blank slate/their gender makes no difference to the narrative

if given the choice I pick a male character for violent tough roles (fighter, explodes poo poo, etc.) and females for 'subtle' roles (magic, thievery, etc.) because I am a horrible cis-gendered heteronormative piece of poo poo

got to say my imagined personality for the characters is generally escapist and light hearted when they;re female but grim and gloomy when they're male. my 3 male skyrim characters were a brutal worlord, a psycho killer and a warmongering guilt-ridden political idealist

I choose girls sometimes when I'm playing RPG games, just cause I like to see women be significant or powerful in stories, kinda goes against the same tired cliches. Fem Shep had a better voice actor, and having Revan be a women under that mask makes it all the better, especially when you got badasses like Mandalore worshiping the ground you walk on. Amy was fun to use in Sonic Adventure 2 cause you could spam your abilities and win any race and piss your friends off.

In multiplayer/competitive games its always a lady because that extra frame worth of time the enemy is male-gazing it up is all the edge I need to pwn their noob asses
