One of my friends in high school who I assumed was just as awkward as I was had three female roommates in his copy of animal crossing wild world named after girls we went to school with.

We're still good friends.

this is why I pvp with a female dwarf rogue who has orange hair. It is a rare combination and that alone turns every player into steve erwin while i'm on the prowl

It's this.

Women characters lend themselves to cooler character concepts I think. If I'm playing as generic Hero Of The Story I'll probably just make an anxiety-ridden sadboy (myself), but if I want to do something cool like a nobleperson who got to where they are by stealing everything that isn't nailed down, having it be a dignified middle-aged gal is more interesting to me than recreating Garrett.

it's a pretty cheap way of getting novelty out of an overused concept but I do it too so

besides it's not like any RPG with a blank slate character really lets you get deep in the the player character's psychology or anything because the very fact that they have to be able to react to anything means the options are broad rather than deep

Yeah she has a really wide range but she doesn't get to use it too often. I was really stoked whenever I found out she was Samus' "voice" in the Prime games because I always admired how the series strayed away from the awful, weirdly sexual damage noises a lot of games with female protags use. Every time Samus got hit in Prime it sounded legit like someone who just got impaled by some fuckin space hornet or something, it was dope.

pyf games w/ non-sexualized female damage noises

the first warning sign for Other M probably should have been that Jennifer Hale wasn't Samus

although I guess it would have just been another "tough soldier chick" role for her so wouldn't exercise her range much

on the positive side Jennifer Hale didn't have to give a long monologue explaining the significance of a "thumbs up" and try to make it sound remotely interesting, so I guess she dodged a bullet there

I never played femshep so I only know her voice work in some renegade compilations I watched but I always found it funny that she sounds way more intimidating than maleshep... she has a certain barely concealed viciousness if that makes any sense

No, I get you. She's really really good at delivering lines in a way that conveys she's clearly pissed off but isn't raising her voice or anything like that. It's good.

I almost suspect that in Mass Effect they told Mark Meer to deliver his lines in a flat tone because they thought male players wouldn't want their protagonist showing any emotion

Abandon posted:

it's really really bad. I mean even if they took out all the stuff that made Samus look like a weak character it would still have a really stupid plot and tons of giant monologues and infodumps recapping a scene that happened literally twenty minutes of gameplay ago. and that's just the plot, the gameplay is bad too

i started from 2-3 and then did 1 before 4.

it's better to go in order because they add new things to the controls with each installment so going from a later game to an earlier one can throw you off on the controls.
