You guys are starting to make me think that driving a cheap Miata year round in Edmonton might be a little harder than in Ontario.

What part of Ontario? I'm in the snow belt and I drove a BMW E34 with no traction control for 5 years. I was sideways most of the time but I don't think Edmonton gets it worse than Southern Ontario does.

Edit: I looked at the pics earlier in the thread and I see visible grass. I think these guys are just whiners.

GTA, aka the part where municipal services decide not to plow any major streets or highways during a major snow fall until 3pm because "more snow is expected". Winter tires don't help much on a three inch thick layer of snow and salt slush that the heavy traffic on 401 produces.

Wait is Regal an actual action house? It just seems like a regular used car lot with a gimmick.

Also, this city has the worst snow removal practices I've ever seen in a Canada, it basically consists of waiting for the snow to melt. If they removed the snow before it compacted into ice the commute would be so much less of a horror show.

Oh, I sold my Canyon last week. It stopped starting, so on Kijiji it went just past midnight. First thing next morning someone bought it sight unseen over the phone. No, really.

A guy from SK showed up with a trailer, gave me cash, tried to start it but the engine went POP and sounded very different afterwards. So the guy single handedly muscled the Canyon onto the trailer with a couple of chains, never seen that done before. The easiest car sale in my life.

Casually looking for my next source of joy, pain, sorrow, I've happened to look at a potentially decent deal, have to pass due to lack of time and experience with fine european car ownership:

08 VW GTI with under 180k, manual, leather, good condition. Dash is lit up like an xmas tree but could be a bunch of nothing serious like the PO says, then again when do they ever think otherwise. Needs a OOP inspection for plates, so not really a long term project unless you got a place to stash it. Price is just north of 5k which seems to be about half the normal asking

iv46vi
Apr 2, 2010
The amount of car you can get in this province for 5k is incredibly depressing though. It's a project territory, so you might as well get something potentially nice in the end.

iv46vi

There's some Stockholm syndrome thing going on in here. Toronto used car market probably spoiled me with regards to pricing, 2k for basic reliable transport and 5k for something nice-ish.

Ontario has a special case for in-family car ownership transfer https://www.ontario.ca/faq/how-do-i-transfer-ownership-vehicle-family-member

Otherwise they charge full 15 percent tax on any and all car sales. Plus safety. And emissions. Also $20 processing fee. Plates are extra.

The place I work at regularly sends drivers on deliveries of more than 13 hours of driving in a single stretch. On Friday I've mentioned in passing to HR that we should probably start looking into other options, because now they send them to oilfield training courses where the commercial driving limits are brought up and drivers will start asking questions. Today I got greeted with "don't bother taking your coat off, you're done". Ok then.

Yeah to continue with Powershift's talk of fatigue on the road, it's ironic that the laws in place for hours of service really don't do anything but make it difficult to sleep when you need to. I can't tell you how many loving times through the years, especially running hard in the USA, where I would get maybe 3 hours sleep and then sit around playing solitaire for 7 hours before getting back on the road, because even though I'm not the least bit tired, the law says I have to pull over. And then 5 hours into my shift, now I'm dead loving tired and perfectly legal to drive.

Clearly solitaire is dangerously irresponsible. Outlaw this activity immediately.

I filled the tank on the work truck yesterday - 2007 F150 4x4 - and I don't know how you guys can afford to run full-size V8 trucks out of your own pockets. Work will pay for the $120 it took to take that tank from just under 1/4 to full, and again and again all summer long so I don't have to worry about it, but there's no way I'm buying an F150 for myself.

I want 4x4, extended cab, and manual transmission; a topper is a nice bonus but I know I can add one later if needed. I can afford to wait until late May to buy this truck, but I need to have it before May 30 so I can drive to Saskatoon that weekend. Getting to Ponoka - 170km away by Google Maps - is about at the limit of what I can rope my coworkers into tagging along with me so they can drive the work truck back after I buy something.

Unless one of you wants to chauffer me around? (seriously - if a goon wants to help me buy a truck I will happily buy beer and pay gas and trouble and pay it forward upon request).

Wasn't there just some discussion of how terrible auctions have gotten lately? or does that apply only to exotic Italian motorcycles?

I'll meet the Tacoma seller on Friday morning, and now I know to look for horrible, horrible rust around the rear end and bed - thank you!

If you're in Edmonton, I got lots of spare time, bored out of my mind and don't mind car shopping, but know nothing about trucks. If you're ok with that I can drive anywhere(tm). Hit me up at gmail.

Cool. I need to call AMA insurance and figure out what happens if I buy a truck after business hours - can I still get it insured to the point I can drive it to my (temporary) home, then register it and complete the song-and-dance a day or two later? They told me I had 30 days to register a vehicle after I buy it, but I'm pretty sure I need insurance, doable by phone, immediately.

Do you have a plate to put on a truck? Then you can drive it home same day, current insurance should have a provision that covers any new car you just bought.

Other solutions include calling AMA for a tow or leaving a deposit and coming back next day with paperwork and plates.

Shell, Costco and Superstore are three readily available stations where premium has no ethanol in it. Costco is always cheaper than Shell, but Superstore has location dependent discounts of 6-10 cents (tied to PC financial cards) that make the price quite reasonable.

Sorry to disagree but that's not very healthy attitude to take. Your commodity item is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it. You can put "X dollars and a blowjob" in your ad and be "very firm" on it but it doesn't make you right or reasonable.

You just setting yourself up for disappointment if you're expecting people on kijiji to obey your instructions to the letter or give your ad more than a cursory look. When dealing with people, and you ain't a Walmart, a sense of humour goes a long way to preserve sanity. Both "I KNOW WHAT I GOT" and "LOL, WHUT, GIVE YOU HALF" are equally annoying.
