I was wondering if you had any sources of information that might be useful if he pursues this avenue? Like a lawn tractor for mowing grass, or a little garden tractor for working a vegetable garden? Either way, yeah, I'll see if I can dig up some of the stuff I was using as reference when I built mine. Can he fabricate things? Well equipped with tools and a loose sense of morality along with delusions of competence? I know those traits sure helped me. Feel free to pm me later, I'll give you my email.

Ordering some suspension stuff and most of it appears to ship by UPS from the states, I'd sooner hang myself than pay their brokerage fees again. Yeah, I did that for a bunch of parts that I ordered from summit for the coronet. It was painless, create an account at the receiving company (I think I used the Montana shipping outlet or something) let them know who you are and what/how much is coming, then buy the stuff and ship it there. Drive down, pick it up, pay the mso fee (minimal) drive back to the border and pay the customs folks whatever they figure you owe in duty/tax. Keep your original bill if you can, makes poo poo easier. I just showed them my emailed bill from summit. I hear the drive to eureka location is way nicer. The long slog down through Lethbridge way is pretty monotonous. Lethbridge itself makes for a nice and very welcome pit stop though. There's a delicate balancing act here, can you get down there and back, while paying gas, duty (if any) tax, etc for less than the ridiculous brokerage fees? I had no problem because I ordered over a thousand dollars worth of poo poo, and have a tiny gas sipping car, biggest issue was getting everything into the tiny car. Also mso isn't open every day on weekends, check their hours of operations.

Might need a ball joint or some front end work, tiny little thunk on bumps. Good rubber. Bought it at 5300. Pretty happy with that. Just need to get it insured and registered now...

I honestly thought you meant people who drove cars instead of pickup trucks were the minority. Speaking of pickups, here's the one I bought on Saturday. You can make out the name of the company that owned it before. Alert services, I think. Anyone know of them? Rocky Mountain House area supposedly. First thing I did was try to figure out the CEL code that it was throwing at me as soon as I left the dealer's house, typical. The OBD port wasn't getting power though, checked the fusebox diagram in the manual. Turns out the cigarette lighter and aux power fuses are mislabeled in the book, because someone had circled them. Handy, helped me find the issue way faster. Turns out the code is just an evap leak, phew. Take care of that eventually. Looks better after a bath and in less harsh lighting, also, doing truck things. I've driven it to work twice now, very happy with it thus far. Brakes seem good, tranny shifts well, engine runs fine. I think it needs balljoints though, there's a bit of a shudder when I go over bumps. Maybe some other front suspension bits. But drat man, nice new tires, decent wheels, hardly any rust to speak of, good bedliner, I think I got a pretty good deal.

1500quidporsche posted:Going to jump in and ask for opinions on the Dakota as I'm looking at one tonight. Are they close enough to Dodge's full size trucks that it won't be constantly broken? I ran a 2001 Dakota with the 3.9 v6, 5 speed manual, and 2wd back when I was a courier. I also used it to tow my heavy tent trailer over and into the Rockies a bunch. Bought it used, ran it as a commercial vehicle for a while, then as a daily driver for years. I put 3-500km on it per day for a year and it never gave me much mechanical trouble while I abused the piss out of it. Heavy loads, light loads, downtown traffic, many accelerations to highway speeds. The bearings in the diff wore out, possibly due to PO fuckery, possibly just because of the kms I was putting on it. Clutch wore out like you would expect, brakes, etc. All normal wear stuff. The catalytic converter failed, replaced under the 180k km emissions warranty. It liked to eat batteries. They wouldn't fade, they'd be fine and then immediately dead fault. Could have been just use/climate related. I think I put three into it over the six or seven years that I owned it. Don't use silverstar headlights. You'll be replacing them every three months. Regulars are fine. I can't comment on the auto trans units, but the manual was great. Had this odd quirk where it would whistle like there was a chip in one if the gear faces when it got to below -6 degrees or so. My mechanic and I had it apart a couple times when he did the clutch, never found any problems. Thought it might have been the pilot bearing, but that was fine too. Either way, it was harmless. If you're looking for something 95% as capable as a half ton in a 20% smaller package and slightly better fuel mileage, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one. E: regarding rust, mine had a bit in the rear wheel wells and the rear bumper. loving road salt. The bed had a factory plastic skin (think giant Rubbermaid bin) so I never noticed any there.
