At gaycon they have a booth in the vendor room where you do "challenges" and one of them is to beat quake level E1M5 to get a prize. Maybe if you were born after 96 this would be hard.

And the other well known QL employee, SyncError, actively plays and makes maps for CTF and helps organize and augment not just competitive tournament streams but the tournaments themselves in many cases. It's possible that these guys are about to ruin a game their fairly passionate about but I would take your cynicism with a grain of salt for a while.

I wound up buying Quake 3 Arena for the Dreamcast because I figured just incase something in computers goes to poo poo and causes older games to become defunct, I shall always have a copy of Quake 3 Arena able to run. 5 dollars well spent.
