I think the game looks pretty great. The combat looks like a solid upgrade from previous games as it looks like you can go from magic to sword on the fly and create your own specialized combos with both. I did get a laugh at the kata the guy was using to shoot magic, look like something out of Equilibrium. But it does look like a return to form. I enjoyed the first Risen and thought Risen 2 was pretty disappointing but still kind of fun (it helped I got it cheap).

I don't think they're going to fail on delivering what they said in that video. They have done it before, it simply looks like they're just doing what they've always been doing but with more polish. I do love that one of the factions is "Voodoo Pirates". It's going to be tough choosing between the mages and them. I do like fabulous hats in my RPGs.

I noticed a bunch of reused assets but who cares. It'll be great eventually but I'd hold off on preordering (unless super cheap) because there's a 99% chance it's going to be buggy as poo poo on release.

Jimbot posted:

What gets me is Risen 1 hardly had any bugs that broke the game in the way it did in Gothic. I played through the entire game, upon its release, and didn't encounter a single gamebreaking bug. I think one of the side missions ended up breaking and of course some weird jank and glitches but besides that it was very pleasant to play through.
Risen 1 was surprisingly solid, yeah. R2 was just a retarded mess though.

Currently Early Access (yeah I know) but I think they said it'll be finished around October. It's more bug-testing than anything.

Hell, Divinity Original Sin has pretty boring writing as a whole.

I can't spoil anything but it's decent. There's several large, multi-tiered main quests that you work on throughout the game (with a large amount of sidequests too) but honestly the main focus is on exploration, dungeons/riddles, and combat mechanics. It's more about playing the game than reading it (if that makes any sense).

EDIT: I should also note that it's hard as balls.

$5 should be your "buy now" price, for sure. I snagged them both for $5 each (BG1 legit through Steam sale, BG2 due to a pricing error) and I don't think they're going to get any cheaper or ever show up in a bundle.

BG2's still buggy though so you have time to hold off.

How was getting the very last trading card?

The ones where you have to replay a "dungeon" weren't bad since you can just sprint through them. However, the ones where you have to replay a chapter to get are a bitch simply because they can take forever and you're hoping the whole time that the game doesn't crash (no saving allowed).

The literal very last trading card isn't required for the achievement and it takes about 2mins in a special options menu.

It's been a long time since I've done it, but I'm pretty sure the All Achievements Unlocked achievement popped once I got that card and not a moment before.

Which is super strange since the achievement actually pops when you finish the quest, not when you get the card. You can only finish the 64 card quest within the game (ie, not in a special main menu). If the 64 card quest is the last achievement you have to solve, then the all achievements...achievement pops at the same time. Nothing additional happened for me when I got the 65th SWERY card.

I know on launch that their achievements were buggy though so who knows.

Darkstone is on Steam and half off, for a pittance of 2,49 euros.
It's an ancient Diablo clone (from 1999, so before D2) and it's absolutely a hidden gem (so indeed a dark stone :downsrim:) of a game.

In a time when ARPGs weren't really much of a thing yet, it shamelessly mooched the core idea and features from the first Diablo, heaped a bunch of its own nifty ideas on top and made the whole thing 3D. It's ridiculously low poly, to the extent that it kinda passes for its own kind of pixel art nowadays. It's actually aged much more gracefully than old-rear end 3d games usually do, imo. There are some graphical glitches with AMD cards, but they're easily fixed by a single launch command line in Steam.

To this day the game's still remarkably fluid to play (at least once you figure out some rather obscure things about the UI) and absolutely a worthy buy for a few bucks if you feel like bashing some monsters and taking their shiny things, but don't have/want/feel like Diablo or PoE or whatever.

Shadow of Mordor seems to have captured this gameplay loop that works really well with the open world setting that the game has, and I hope other devs making open world games take notice. Last one I really liked was Black Flag.

Exploring the open world and getting sidetracked by stuff that isn't simply just collectibles is something I wish most devs would stop doing.

Shadow of Mordor also runs into the problem where the story missions are actually worse than just getting lost on tangents in the open world, which is also something Black Flag did for me while sailing the Caribbean.

I finally broke down and bought the deluxe pack from Nuuvem and it gave me the pre-order bonuses too. I thought AC4's open world was extremely repetitive and the entire main campaign was mostly escort/follow missions so basically I'm hoping SoM is nothing like it.

I'd advise people not to buy Boiling Point, Xenus 2 (Boiling Point 2), and The Precursors, as much as I want to like them (especially for $30, jesus).

Even after the fan patches, BP2 & Precursors crash so frequently that they're basically unplayable. Great ideas but absolutely busted, incompetent execution.

EDIT: This was as of a couple years ago but I highly doubt anything's changed. The guy doing the main Bloodlines patches has also been working on these games forever, and if he can't fix them, well...
