Saying there is easily untapped potential ripe for the picking for PC gaming with Steam for Japan is probably not an overstatement IMO.

VN's are slowly getting ported over to Steam, and once the other VN companies see the insane sales they can expect during the Steam sales they'll probably translate and dump their entire portfolio onto the marketplace.

Honestly, I'm still amazed that the Touhou guy hasn't done it. It's literally just him, and for a small pittance for translation (I'm sure Carpe Fulgur would do it) he'd probably make close to a million in a few weeks.

EA doesn't even discount the DLC for ME3 on their Origin store so I doubt we'll see a complete pack on any platform anytime soon.

The only thing you can do is wait and hope they do a GOTY/Complete edition for $40 after all the DLC is released.

For some reason they didn't do this with the ME Trilogy edition, even though Lair of the Shadow Broker was essential to the ME3 plot. So you can buy the trilogy for $50, then spend another $50 for all the never discounted DLC.

Alternatively, just skip ME3 like you would DA2.

Ending aside, ME3 was still pretty amazing. The only major downfall was how much content you were locked out from without a save carried over from ME1 and ME2.

If EA/Bioware wants to continue doing the "epic game trilogies" they need to implement a app to let people manually set the major plot flags that the saves would trigger.

The best parts of ME3 were

- Javik, and taking him everywhere to hear his amazing dialogue
- The main quest line dealing with the Genophage
- Leviathan's backstory revelations (still a dick move to make it $10 though)
- Citadel DLC just being a blast to play
- Multiplayer
- The Asari homeworld quest line
- The Geth/Quarian conflict

So 1/3 of it was paid DLC, but after being invested in the series since the start it was still worth it to me to play through the entire game.

That is a ridiculous humble bundle.

The EA and THQ bundles make like $4-5 million, so despite the internet rage over "These aren't indies!" people still jump at the chance to buy the 2-3 year old games and the publishers get a massive single payout. We might see more like this when a company is nearing the end of its fiscal quarter/year, needs an influx of cash, and knows from past experience digital sales and bundles will generate a minimum six figures.

Origin has only just started to add support and features on par with Steam, and it took them a long, LONG time to reach that point. Back before EA rebranded it, it was a lovely little app called EA Downloader, and anything you bought through it had an expiry date. You could pay an extra $6 on top of your premium direct-from-publisher price for 'download insurance' so that you'd be able to access the game for another two years.

There has been so much wrong with Origin over the years. It's decent and unobtrusive enough now (although it's yet another password/login to remember), but it took a very long time to get to such a mediocre position.

Origin's customer service is miles ahead of Steam in terms of accessibility and ease of use, in addition to EA offering a 24 hr window to return a game if you regret the purchase.

The game designers seemed to have gone "How can we make overworld travel more tedious? Oh, let's add boats, long winding river passages, and huge sections of the map you can only get to by boat! Plus all the bullshit driving you have to do as well to get to boat docks"

Really, getting a sequel out of Dead Island was extremely lucky. That they released a game that was literally a re-skin of the previous one without fixing any of the major problems and adding more should've been a huge red flag that they developers were incompetent hacks.

Dead Island: Wow, loving amazing trailer. Okay, the game isn't great, its got some major issues, but its the only FPS zombie hack'n'slash on the market so it'll get a pass.

Dead Island Riptide: ...this is the exact same loving game with the same problems as DI in addition to a new set of problems from all the generic poo poo they added.

Dead Island 2: Being hyped as more comical (so like Dead Rising) and in a different engine , so at the minimum it'll have to look better and have a different UI. Still probably going to be a bug ridden mess on release.

It did give a great gamer journalism moment from IGN though.

quote:

IGN's Greg Miller stated that although he found it to be 'great gory fun', it still contained bugs and glitches that were found in the first game. He also said that 'it was tempting to simply paste the original Dead Island review on the page and call it a day'. He praised the gameplay, co-op and the ability to import your save from the original, noting that the enemies you face are at scale with your level, so that the game gives you an appropriate challenge. He criticized the storyline and the overall look of the game. He went on to say that the game didn't do much to improve itself from its predecessor in terms of overall performance. However, he stated that the lackluster graphics and performance could be overlooked by how much fun the game is to play. He gave the game a 7.2

"Same essential game, recurring bugs from previous version, lovely story, bad graphics, more or less exactly the same as predecessor. GREAT FUN TO PLAY!"

I did a no kill game first time through, which was crazy fun because rather then save scumming I'd just get caught, shoot 2 or 3 guards with tranqs then blink all over the place until I lost them.

It would be really hard to do a no kill run without checking how to properly do it though. Any unconscious bodies that fall too far or get eaten by rats count against you, and allegedly the intro when you defend the Empress will also count against you. Plus, there's a problem with one of the no-kill missions where you have to instantly knock out and drag another NPC away before he kills your target, so going in without knowing its going to be frustrating.

Everyone in the thread kept recommending that for the first time through go nuts, full high chaos, use all your powers indiscriminately rather then a Thief style play-through.

I think the original play-testers didn't like having to kill everyone, so the devs made a token effort to give every assassination a no kill option and ended up loving it so much they went back and made it really good. Most of the no-kill options are arguably worse then death.

Overlord II is $2.50 today. Is it the same kind of fun as the first? I'm guessing I can use joy2key or something to play it with my 360 controller.

There is an infuriating feature where you can either convert or harvest each villager in the towns you conquer, and to get all of them you have to approach every house and smash up the doors to see if they are in the houses (there are close to 100 in the starting village) and then make sure to 'enthrall' them rather then kill them.

It was a massive pain in the rear end and trying to get all of them is what finally made me stop playing. It's pretty cool, the enthralled villagers work at forges and churn out gear your minions can pick up and arm themselves with, but the rest of the game is fairly bland and the new additions don't really make it more fun or better then the original Overlord.

The first game is still fun and absolutely worth $1.25. The expansion is just "Hell" versions of the regular game levels, which are harder and have more complex puzzle solving.

Absolutely, way better then vanilla DR2 by far. Plus with the co-op one can be Frank West and the other can be Chuck.

Caveat: You have to let the ADHD thing go until you progress and level up your character a bit. Rescuing easy to get survivors, avoiding random bosses, and playing through the story until you die 2-3 times is the best method. Also, find all the Gambling skill books, hit the casinos and rack up the $$$ to easily unlock all the cars/bikes to make travel way less tedious(pawn shop unlocks are permanent). In the first mall alone you have everything you need to make a couple of light sabers and knife gloves, some of the best weapons, and there's a hidden area down one end with a sniper rifle, katana, extra zombrex(I think) and a drop box key.

Also, getting all the survivors is achievement completion/combo cards only. To unlock all the endings you just have to beat story mode and make sure to always have some extra zombrex. Once you've unlocked the utility tunnels its crazy easy to get 4+ when the game starts.

The ground combat really kills it.
Seriously, the line of sight/fire issues are horrible. I like playing games like this without saving (I did so with JA2) but here, to me, it seems impossible. It's just not intuitive. If I have a soldier crouch in the center on a warehouse rooftop, he shouldn't be able to get shot by someone hugging the warehouse wall. Or all the times I've moved a heavy for a slightly better position, only to be informed I now have 0% chance to hit, or something silly like a windowpane blocking 50% of my shots and not enough TUs to get back to my original position and fire. Also, I think the entire MG spray hit chance is calculated when you fire, because I've tried firing through those silly waist high walls with screens on them that you get in UFOs, which give you 0% chance to hit your target, because I figured ok, 1 round blows them away and the rest spray the alien behind... well, no, they all randomly hit the air where the screen used to be. This stuff kind of breaks a tactics game. JA2 didn't have these issues and that was 15 years ago...

Mission variety:
There really isn't any. I know there wasn't that much in the original game either, but if there's one aspect where I think the game could've evolved, it's this one.
There was just so much wasted potential here, extraction missions, coming to enforce local forces battle lines (I think they promised a static tank emplacement at one point), pilot rescue missions, I don't know, anything?

It's a great 3rd person shooter that doesn't focus on cover based firing and encourages you to charge into the mobs and hack your way through, shooting only when you need to hit a ork who's cowardly running away from you. Essentially, if you're not running towards enemies and shooting at them until you're in melee range, you're not play the game right.
