I don't know - for time being I'm not attributing this to malice (very much), but it makes me wonder, as they've slashed the raise I was given for the month I've handed my resignation (I was given the raise three months before, because I was reconsidering to leave then as well, but I've no papers for that as well), and put some reductions on my P45. Time will tell.

No papers needed. You handed in notice on day x, they reduced your pay on day x+1. That's cut and loving dry retaliation. Burn them to the ground with a lawyer.

Usually the more stringent of the state they are headquartered in or the state you're in.

Example: If you work for a company headquartered in Washington that has a 40h workweek overtime policy, and you live and work in California with an 8h day overtime policy, the California policy will overrule the Washington one.

Is there an equivalent to the drunk military thread here? Because I need a drink.

I'm in the Air Force and basically a networker. Routers, switches, backbone and infrastructure. I just PCSed (moved bases) back to the same place I left 9 years ago. This location in Korea, most technicians are only here a year so it leads to a lot of 'let's just do this and make it work now' solutions.

So back then our shop spent about 4 months cleaning up our spaces, properly documenting, labling, troughing, and clearing up dead fiber from a huge data center and the offices pulling from it.

This week my heart has been repeatedly broken as I've toured all the spaces we spent time on and discovered that no one has done anything to maintain that work.

The make it work mentality means there's OC1 and OC3, 100M and Gig switches, single mode and multi mode, ST, SC, MTRJ, LC and even freaking FC connectors randomly utilized across different networks and applications.

I don't know how it works (other than not well) but it's been tasked to me to unfuck everything as I did the crazy thing of volunteering to stay here for 3 years. In the same breath that they tell me there's an urgent requirement, and no we can't wait on the proper connectors so hodgepodge something together 'temporarily'

If we're the best military / AF in the world, I don't want to see #2s infrastructure.

RIP.

This is the way it will be when we reach star trek tech. "gently caress it, just keep us in life support and goddamn bombs until we can make it back to port". Embrace it. There will never be enough time or money to do it right.

Microsoft fired all their QA a few years ago.

Ehh, not really. MS eliminated the SDET role which was a test specialist, but the ones worth their salt were rolled into SDE roles. Unit testing continues, it's just owned by a single pool of developers instead of a siloed off group. The result being that tests are now written by people who understand and develop the code, and changes to cover edge case scenarios are now easier to implement.

Poll: Whats the better job to have, one where you're a big fish in a small pond and have your hands in just about everything, or you're silo'd in a large environment?

Interviewing on Friday for a job that would have me making that change (sysadmin->Windows server admin). As my brain is wont to do, it's already 18 steps ahead thinking about how in New Job I won't be able to do things x, y, or z anymore that I really like. At the same time, I've been a sysadmin here for going on 6 years and don't have the opportunities to gain depth in any particular area, due to the fact that I have my hands in -everything- and have no backup. I've had a phone interview so far and the job sounds like it would be a good fit for me, but the interviewer kinda stressed that I'd be looking at a much slower environment than what I might be used to (which might be a good thing). I'll get more details this Friday, but just wanted to see what everyone's opinions were of the two different environment types.

Get silo'd and appreciate what a wide base of knowledge can do for you amongst peers who have been siloed their entire career.

Plus your creepy gently caress of a manager doesn't work there.
