The norwegian authorities have been on high alert for the best part of the last week, and now we have this:

http://www.iltalehti.fi/uutiset/2014072818524795_uu.shtml

A Finnish tabloit is saying that the Norwegian police force has requested to have checkpoints deep within ( almost ~100 km, 60 miles) the Finnish side of the border to control the flow of traffic and enforce response* if neccessary.

Keep in mind, this is completely legal between the Nordic Countries (the law enforcement areas overlap 100 km from border and more if requested even without the host oversight) but the level of activity is completely new, never has there been roadblocks by other countries on the other side. In the history, the Finnish police force was sometimes requested for an armed response, since historically the Swedish cops did not carry firearms, but this is something new. Any idea what the hell is going on?

*Edit: Deadly responce not excplicitly said, but probably possible if neccessary.

http://www.thelocal.no/20140724/warning-norway-faces-imminent-terror-attack is a pretty decent high level introduction to the situation.

Basically some of the security services got wind of plans to attack Norway and Norway was quick to publicize it and make preparations... perhaps a bit too much, according to some: http://www.thelocal.se/20140728/sweden-slams-norways-terror-alert-tactics

Racist nuts harking the loon-bugle of Brevik maybe?

Its hard to know without the cops actually giving details. Its speculation really.

PST, Norway's civilian intelligence agency said that they had gotten wind of a possible terror attack in Norway by a Syrian group of some sort. No domestic right-wing stuff. It's basically lots more police everywhere and they are armed, which is interesting as police in Norway generally are not armed but one of the new government parties has expressed the wish to arm Norwegian policemen.

I would guess nothing's gonna come of this, but I dunno.

It's funny, because the closest thing they've come to Islamic terrorism is the Israelis killing some random Muslim guy they thought was a Hamas operative or something, and of course Breivik trying to convince everyone to rise up against the Muslims by killing Norwegian kids.

They have some kinda terrifying nationalism going on over there too. I mean Norway day when everyone has to dress in basically a special Norway-only uniform and marches around every city about norway being norway and everything is loving Norway I dunno maybe I overreact to it but when you celebrate national pride by dressing like this:

Yeah it's much better to celebrate your nationalism with HALO jumps into stadiums and million dollar flyovers, way less creepy

You just need a handful of Norwegians for them to go full tilt with that getup in other countries too. It's not surprising though, from what I gather, the way they're taught history it's basically "Poor Norway was treated like a colony by the Danes, and then the Swedes, and it's only after 1905 that Norway finally emerged from a 500 year long national nightmare". Basically working from the assumption that Norway in 1398 would have been as nice and progressive as it was in 1905, if it wasn't because the dastardly Danes and Swedes had oppressed them while being regular nation states at home. Which is obviously silly, given that Denmark was basically like a mini-Habsburg Empire, ruled by absolutist Germans who didn't even speak Danish, and who wouldn't even have seen the point in treating Norwegians differently than their other subjects.

Mossad murdered the innocent Moroccan waiter Ahmed Bouchikhi because they mistook him for one of the Black September guys behind the attack on the Munich Olympics. That was back in 1973, I'm not sure if Hamas even existed back then.

A more recent incident that might actually have been Genuine Islamic Terror was the attempted murder of William Nygaard in 1993. Since the assailant was never found we don't really know the reason for the attack, but since Nygaard was the Norwegian publisher of Rushdie's The Satanic Verses it's usually linked to Khomeini's fatwa.

Yeah, you're right, Hamas was only founded more than a decade later. So many Palestinian organizations to remember.

Do they make children pledge allegiance in school? Do you see lots of cars with "support our troops" stickers? Do people get angry if a Norwegian flag is mistreated? Do they even sing the national anthem before domestic sporting events?

I guess there's some level of it here in the UK too, but not to the extent that almost everyone is expected to have a particular retarded national uniform hanging in their wardrobe to be worn one day a year as is the case in Norway

I dunno I think having a very particular outfit that is like a national uniform is pretty nationalistic

But all the opinions I have expressed about this were mostly formed after speaking to one particular Norsk person so I admit my view on it might be terribly terribly blinkered.

It's perfectly normal not to own a bunad. I'd say maybe 50% or so sports one on the national day. If you want to make blanket uninformed criticisms about norwegian culture I recommend looking into FRP.

You're right. To be honest I was unfairly taking out my rage here about the acquaintance whose views I based these opinions on. They never struck me as a total dick but they gave the impression that their own level of nationalism was the norm in Norway.

Still, 50% is a lot comparatively, no?

I think that's actually one of the more nationalistic criticisms of the direction the UK has been taking over the past 20 years? "hurr durr immigrants are bad, multiculturalism is evil"? I'm not sure to what extent I am a stereotypical brit really. I'm don't think I'm nationalistic at all so any degree of nationalism irks me

I'm not referring to you personally, I'm referring to your "Norway is such and such" blanket statement, and that's a bit rich from an inhabitant of a country that has it's own measuring system made from bullshit.

Well every year we carry a tree indoors, decorate the house, wear silly red hats, sing Christmas carrols and eat various birds for 8 hours. Technically because it's Jesus' birthday but nobody in my family have been in a Church for 20 years except for weddings and funerals so really it's just a kinda weird thing we do because we've always done it. You can't gauge how people feel about the origins or connotations of a holiday just because they celebrate it.

I mean I'm sure there's Americans with St. Paddy's outfits they take out every year but that doesn't mean they necesarrily go around ranting about Ireland all the time. Some people just like to get shitfaced in tap shoes and green top hats.

Not quite sure what measuring system you're talking about? the UK uses a mixture of metric and imperial? http://www.joeydevilla.com/2008/08/13/countries-that-dont-use-the-metric-system/

Also my general point about myself personally is that, since I don't like nationalism anyway, I'm open to equivalent criticisms of the UK as might be leveled against Norway...as such, the "that's a bit rich" is kind of irrelevant?

It's not like i'm marching around in my british uniform whilst simultaneously critizing others for marching around in their country's uniform

Maybe I'm missing your point.

What does "up there" mean? It's a Dutch tradition, not Scandinavian.
