You can easily summit the mountain behind me without any technical gear, but we didn't feel like it that day because we were hung over and it was 5200 feet vertical elevation. We just did the 2600' hike to the lake.

I could post hundreds of photos from the place that I've taken, there's hardly anything boring. When there's someone who doesn't want a photo posted of them, I photoshop a smilie or something onto their face. Just a suggestion.

Assiniboine is very good. Okay, that's enough.

Very unconventional since I have a 40L and usually split gear with the husband. Here I have our ridgerests strapped to the sides of my pack while dealing with a flooded trail. He was carrying the tent. Also strapped to the outside is a camera tripod. I look like an oddball on the trail but that's perfectly fine, I'm happy and having a lot of fun and that's the entire point.

But it feels amazing on a hot day. I tend to dunk my hair in it to keep cool too. Works wonders. Plus it 's so refreshing and crisp to drink.

Jastiger posted:As someone who has lived "in the city" their whole life, its crazy to me that standing water just chillin out is SAFE TO DRINK. (It is safe, right?) I treat it all, except for a couple rare occasions where I've literally drank from a glacier, and it wasn't standing, flowing over ice and bedrock. It's like eating snow. There's no life up there that can transmit parasites. But I have severely lectured people drinking from streams below tree line, they're just asking to be sick. We have a lot of megafauna here that like to poo poo in or near rivers and lake shores. Especially horses. A number of popular trails are open to horse outfitters to take clients on day trips.

Reverse Centaur posted:I live in the mountains of British Columbia and we've always been told the mineral content of the water can give you the runs if it doesn't give you beaver fever or something nastier. Gotta boil it. This is our tap water source though, unchlorinated: Interesting, I've never heard any concern over mineral content out here. Just that if you're below tree-line, assume it's full of poo poo and disease. Ironically I just got over what was probably giardia from a trip to Mexico last month.

The second one has the coolest lake situation. World famous Lake Louise is at the bottom of the valley, then Mirror Lake, then Lake Agnes. You can visit them all in an hour. And you should! Everyone get out there!

peter gabriel posted:I think we are going to be booking a holiday to that hotel on Lake Louise! Oh yeah, if you like hiking there are dozens upon dozens of trails, from simple flat meanders to actual summits that you only need to walk up. Check Mt. Fairview (not Fairview lookout) one of the easiest mountains to summit with one of the best views you could ask for. Lots of nice restaurants around too. I like the Plain of 6 Glaciers trail, which goes from Louise to an alpine tea house with awesome glacier views, and the Lake Agnes teahouse which is surrounded buy vertical cliffs. A train is theoretically possible, if you have the cash. There's a Rocky Mountain Rail train that runs through Lake Louise to Vancouver, but last time I checked the trip from Calgary to Vancouver was like $1500 per person. You could bus it, though.
