It happens every he's brought up. Don't get me wrong, he's a vapid, mealy-mouthed carbon blob, but that line of attack is still pretty questionable. It's because when you say his name with anything even resembling speed, it sounds like Erica Betz. It's almost impossible not to.

Antlions posted:So, something I'm not sure about : ICAC good? ICAC bad? ICAC good but run by bad people? I hear bits and pieces about it but I don't really have any context to go on. ICAC fantastic and run by good people. It's an independent anti-corruption body in NSW with fairly significant powers to compel witnesses and evidence, it was started by the Liberal Party under Greiner, but so far has mostly been a component of bringing down 2 Liberal Premiers and 6 other Lib MPs, as well as the whole scummy situation over Obeid and Macdonald in the NSW Upper House. The Libs are now currently complaining that ICAC is a kangaroo court and that its inquiries should be done in secret, like other anti-corruption bodies, to which I say to politicians; if you haven't done anything wrong, you have nothing to fear

Ragingsheep posted:That's the thing I don't get with ICAC, you get found guilty of corruption but you don't go to jail because evidence used against you can't be used by the DPP. It's a component of ICAC having extraordinary powers to compel witnesses and evidence. It can act beyond the bounds of a regular criminal court because of its narrow focus. Fortunately being brought in front of ICAC effectively ends your political career, so that's something at least.

Contra Duck posted:I'm fully expecting them to try to shut it down after this inquiry is finished saying that it's no longer needed because we already found all the corruption. That's why the NSW Greens are planning to push for a referendum to add ICAC into the NSW constitution

hyperbowl posted:But there's no need for a referendum to add stuff to (or remove stuff from) the NSW constitution. It's not required, but as a political stunt it's completely bulletproof. It would also allow inserting ICAC with a provision of requiring bipartisan support to change its funding or its terms of reference.

Guy held a presser with Al Gore before turning around and repealing the carbon tax, while at the same time stymieing any future attempt to legislate an ETS. He inexplicably added india to the list of countries which must have an ETS before Australia. Nice one Clive, the planet will thank you for that one. I don't disagree about Palmer being a populist weathervane, but free tertiary education has been a plank of what passes for the PUP platform since it came into being. It's the closest thing Clive has ever had to a consistent position.

Les Affaires posted:In the face of mounting allegations against the LNP in ICAC, perhaps the Greens and other parties might try a strategy of pointing out that they've never been investigated for corruption in their entire history. This actually doesn't work well; it comes across as bragging or, yes, a sign of our irrelevance. What's best is to emphasise our positive qualities in a way that only implies we aren't corrupt rather than outright saying "we aren't corrupt:" emphasising that we don't take corporate donations, for example.

Remember, it was ICAC getting Eddie Obeid and Ian Macdonald that got the Liberals in in the first place. The Libs will lose a fuckton of ground, but losing government isn't a guarantee. They're still ahead on polling. Also as far as Queensland goes, a fun anecdote. My American brother-in-law decided to start reading up about Australian politics.
