Red Rain is coming down

Red Rain
Welcome, one and all, to the Mojave Wasteland! You'll come for the sun, and stay for the gambling! Currently in the midst of a war between three factions, the democratic NCR, the brutal Caeser's Legion and the elusive Mr. House! You play as (at least in the vanilla game) The Courier, who is tasked with making an odd delivery, a casino chip of solid platinum! Of course, things are never that easy, and you get intercepted by a suited man, who shoots you in the head and leaves you for dead.

Thankfully, you're saved by the medical skill of Doc Mitchell, and so you set on your way, intent on finding the man who shot you and making him pay! Of course, it's not quite going to go that way, because I'm using mods! The mods are as follows...

Weapon Mods Expanded
Freeside Open Patch
The Strip Open Patch
Populated Casinos Mod
Light Step ED-E Mod
Brotherhood House Alliance Patch
Courier's Stash pre-order Selection Pack
Roleplayers Alternative Start
The New Bison Steve Hotel Mod
Run The Lucky 38 Mod

Now, for reference, I probably will not spend much time-if any-dicking around playing house with the last two mods. Though it's not just going through menus, there are quests involved. For the most part, the mods I've selected don't change much. The biggest change is, hands down, the Alternative Starts mod, which allows you to select a background. I've selected it because it allows me to get much more into the narrative. Other big changes are the aforementioned last two mods, and the Weapon Mods Expanded mod allowing the modding of Unique weapons, and for Weapon Mods to be removed.

Let's get this nuked-out train moving, folks!

The Intro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-GWACd8zw0

Oh, good god, my head...

: Jesus Christ, Victor! What happened here?

Where... am I? All I remember is... something about games being rigged? Hey, that weird thing in the corner looks pretty cool! I'm gonna mess with it!

Aw yeah, I hope it has Space Invaders! Wait, what's Space Invaders?

Oh, wow, it's all coming back now! I remember, I was never the most perceptive. Even when I'm wearing glasses, I'm below average. I was strong and fast enough to get by, though. And I was always really smart. It came in handy when it came to... oh, great, I can't even remember my job now...

Well, I might as well check the computer too...

Sunset Sarsaparilla has personality tests now? Geeze, those guys have their thumbs in every pie! Or at least, they would if everyone who worked there wasn't long dead...

The first thing it asked me about was my name. Pfft, that's easy enough. How can't I remember? After... something I used to do... after that went under, I drank my liver out in Vegas and gambled away my life savings. I lost so much that everyone I knew started calling me...

I turned to the terminal, and typed in my name.

"LUCKY" BILL

The next thing it apparently wanted to know about was my appearance. Well, uh, that's pretty simple to figure out. I mean, you could probably see my hair from a mile away.

I'd gotten the dye job in Vegas. Some rear end in a top hat bet me I couldn't shotgun a bottle of Jake Juice. If I won, I got some caps. I lost, so the rear end in a top hat made me dye my hair bright blue. I remember when I stepped out of the barber shop, a bunch of drunk NCR assholes started laughing their asses off. Ah, memories...

Next off, it asked me my viewpoint on life, and all I could really say is that it was one hell of a balancing act. Apparently this drat personality test thought I was a pussy for not going Mother Theresa and Baby Eating, but then by the time this is all over I'll be at one of those extremes... wait, when what's all over?

: It actually worked? Well, it's like mama used to tell me... "Son, there ain't nothing four or five stimpaks can't fix!" hehe...

There's that voice again... Whatever, next up...

Tag skills... Yeah, I've always been good at sneaking around, and picking locks. Handy skills when you grow up a Freeside urchin. I remember, I managed to pick the lock to gun store, which I suppose leads into my next skill... Anyway, after I grew up I got pretty good with guns. I remember heading outta town and picking off mole rats with an old Varmint Rifle. Definitely helped me when I needed to protect my cara... cara something...

Then it asked me about my Weapon Preferences, and that's just frigging dumb. Who can be picky enough in the wasteland to have weapon preferences?

Wait a minute...

I could...

I remember now! I ran a caravan! A drat successful caravan! I was one of the best! Willy's Caravan was lucrative! And then... the raiders... But it couldn't have been just raiders. They were too coordinated, and I've never seen a Jackal, Viper or Fiend with a loving Plasma Caster! I remember now, where I was when I got shot... I was making a delivery. I was reduced to working for the loving Mohave Express just to make ends meet, and then that bastard in the jacket shot me in the face! Oh, when I get outta here... wait, where am I?

The last question was about how much money I had. I... didn't have much. Not much at all.

(Not shown in character creation because I didn't get a screen shot: My traits! I chose Four Eyes and Skilled!)

After that, the test was over. I stood up from the terminal. All there was left to do now was open the door and head on out, to... wherever that door lead...

I opened the door and...

: Goodness, he's waking up!

I sat up on the bed, my head swimming.

: What the gently caress?!? Where am I?!?
The man smiled.

: I'm Doc Mitchell, and I just saved yer life, kid! Though I don't blame ya for gettin' worried. You survived somethin' pretty nasty. Now, be careful, you wouldn't wanna...

Before he could finish, I stood up and walked over to the door. "I gotta get out of here, there's a cheap-suited bastard that I've gotta-"

: Woah, slow down there, son! You just survived two bullets to the brain! I'm not gonna stop ya from leaving, but I am gonna ask that you stick around Goodsprings, at least for a little while while you get your bearin's. Doctor's orders.

He cracked a small smile, and offered me my backpack. Despite everything, I couldn't help but like the soft-spoken doctor. I smiled back, and took my things. After dressing up, I stepped outside, and was nearly blinded by the sunlight.

:loving hell! I shouted to no one in particular. After rubbing my eyes, I decided to take stock of my inventory.

Perfect. Booze, food and drugs. I'm all set.

Of course, following the grand idea that you can simply never have enough booze, I decided to head down to the saloon. Inside, I met an interesting young woman.

: Oh, hey, you're that guy who got his brains blown out, aren't you? Man, how're you still alive?

: A small miracle and lots of stimpaks. Now, would you happen to know anyone who can teach me the basics of shooting things? Getting my brains blown out sorta reduces cognitive functions.

She smiled at me, and pulled out her rifle.

: You're talking to her. I can show you the basics if you'll just come out back with me.

And so we headed out back, where several Sunset Sarsaparilla bottles were lined up on a fence.

It was easy enough, actually. Man, it'll be a real big help if I ever encounter the dreaded BOTTLE-MEN!

I actually told Sunny so, and rather than calling me a dick she actually laughed.

: Well we can't get onto the good stuff if you're holding the gun the wrong way. Look, I've got another job for you...

: Sounds like a good time to me. I'm in.

And so we headed on down to the water supply. On the way, I made some small talk.

: So how's Goodsprings anyhow? I imagine it must be nice enough.

: It's good enough, honestly. Relaxing, especially after my time as a mercenary.

: Heh, sounds relaxing. I'd stay, but I've got a job to do.

: Heh, I can sympathize. Well, after we off these geckos you can get around to whatever it is you were planning on doing.

We arrived at the watering hole, and I could hear the geckos. Sunny seemed prepared to sneak up on them, but I charged in guns-a-blazing.

We had just finished the second watering hole, when I heard the sounds of a woman screaming and geckos... making gecko noises, I guess. Regardless, I approached the ridge and saw a woman fighting off geckos. So what did I do?

I jumped down and blew off their loving faces at point blank.

Boy, was that woman glad to see me. Considering I saved her loving life and all.

She even gave me some purified water! Then Sunny walked up to me.

: So, you saved Judy's rear end, huh? Nice going. Told her she should've gone with something other than her kitchen knife.

: Eh, all in a day's work. Back on the caravan days, Geckos were always after us. Turns out they taste great grilled.

She smiled at me, and started walking off.

: Right, I'm heading back to the saloon. You should come with me, talk to Trudy for a bit. She'd love t'meet you.

I nodded, and followed her. Sure, I might have to find some suited bastard and blow his brains out, but that doesn't mean I can't have a stiff drink first...

UNFORTUNATELY, due to a glitch while attempting to remove a mod to improve my performance (the populated wasteland mod, for the curious), I need to reset good ol' Bill. So if you see some discrepancies in, say, appearance or amount of caps, you know what to blame. New post coming in at some point or another.

EDIT: Apparently the game saw fit to give me some new weapons too! I now have a silenced SMG, a Lever-Action Shotgun, and a rolling pin. Thanks, game. Thanks a lot.

This should be good. Not having a PC to speak of means I don't dare ever risk my precious laptop on games or mods so I'm rage to see the differences that mods can make to this game.

Especially the Weapon Mods Mod. That was always a favorite point for me. Will you be covering that?

I admit, I was a little edgey at first after seeing the big MODDED sticker on the front but so far this seems like a fun little LP. Can I get the link for the backstory mod though? I'm interested in seeing what other backgrounds and bonuses/penalties you can get.

I'll see what I can do! I also have a mod known as the "Weapon Mod Vending Machine" that I'm not using, I might put aside a mini-update to cover all that.

Things'll keep coming folks! Working on the update more!

EDIT: Here's that mod you were asking about, Arcade Rabbit.

BADDA-BING!

As I stepped into the Saloon, I heard a rather loud argument going on. I approached the sound, and found a man in an NCRCF uniform threatening a woman who must've been Trudy.

I didn't take kindly to him threatening the people who had been kind enough to help me through the whole "Getting shot" thing, so...

Ah, good old Levi. What would I do without you? Anyhow, after that I talked to Trudy some.

: Uh, yeah, sorry 'bout smearing that guy's brains all over your saloon... Need a hand?

: No, it's alright, happens more often than you'd think. Though if you could help me clean up the pulp, that'd be great.

So I spent the next half hour or so cleaning brain-mash out of the floors. I felt it was the last I could do. Afterwards, I sat down to have a drink or several.

: So, Trudy, you know anything 'bout the bastards that shot me?

She shrugged as she cleaned the counter.

: Not much I could tell you, other'n the fact that they were a bunch of freeloaders. Expected drinks on the house. One of 'em knocked over my radio "By accident" and it hasn't been working right since.

: Well, I know a few basics, want me to take a look at it?

: Sure, if you can fix it. There'd be some caps in it for you.

It was simple enough to fix it. A wire'd gotten moved out of place. All it took was a bit of duct tape and it was back on, the gravelly voice of Mr. New Vegas filling the saloon once again.

: ...in the lap of luxury. Got a song for you right now that's about a man that's cold on the exterior, but deep down ya'know he's a good man and his name is Johnny Guitar.

Everyone in the saloon groaned, and Trudy turned off the radio.

: Uh, thanks anyways.

I sat back down to finish my vodka.

: So what was that argument all about?

: Oh, some convicts from the NCRCF, call themselves "Powder Gangers", are after a man who we let into town. His name's Ringo. And now every Paul, John and George from the NCRCF seem to want our heads on a platter.

: You got a plan?

: I'm just hoping this "Ringo" fellow gets the hell out and takes the Powder Gangers with him. He's hiding out in the old gas station.

I thanked her, paid for my booze, tipped my hat and headed outside. I then walked straight for the gas station, only stopping to loot a Sunset Sarsaparilla machine that somehow hadn't been looted.

: Woah, hey, let's all act naturally here! I know happiness is a warm gun, but don't be a Madman!

: Sorry, you just startled me is all. I'm gonna guess you're not with the Powder Gangers?

: See this little pink bit on my shoulder? I'm pretty sure this is part of Joe Cobb's brain stem.

: You killed Joe Cobb? Uh, okay, but he's not really the problem. It's his friends we need to worry about.

: Hey, we can probably take 'em! I'll get some help from the townsfolk.

: Right. Talk to Sunny Smiles first, she's been more helpful than most have.

I nodded, and walked back to the Prospector's Saloon, though I made a detour to the general store first.

As I perused the selection, I noticed two Laser Sights that I would have loved to get my hands on. Unfortunately, with my limited funds, they would have to wait. At the very least, I'd gotten extended magazines for my Varmint Rifle.

(Now, this is pretty cool! Part of the Weapon Mods Expanded Mod is a new Mod Menu, where you can not only see mods you don't have yet, you are also allowed to see how many of a particular mod you have, and you're also given the chance to remove mods! This comes in handy, especially if you find the Unique version of a weapon later and want to mod it! It also homogenizes various weapon mods. A laser sight can go on an SMG, a Rifle, or a Pistol! Silencers are also based more on weapon type, rather than specific calibers. I'll go into this more as I find/purchase more weapon mods!)

I stepped into the Prospector Saloon and talked to Sunny.

: Hey, Sunny, wanna go pop some Convict brains?

: Awesome, let's do it.

: Woah there, cowboy, we're not exactly a force to be reckoned with. Trudy's kinda like the town mom, I bet a few folks'd help us out if she's on our side.

I nodded, and headed over to Trudy.

: So what you're saying is you want me to help you take on dangerous armed convicts? You better have a decent plan.

: Well there're some great ambush positions I know about, if you're willing to help out.

: I'll talk with some of the townsfolk, I'll see if they'll help out.

: Right, thanks. I've gotta get going now.

I dashed back to the Gas Station and talked to Ringo.

: Well, Ringo, you ready for this? We've got backup, we need to do this now.

Sunny smiles dashed into the room, her rifle out.

We headed outside, and before anyone could stop me I dashed straight for the Powder Gangers.

The fight went by in a blur, but the citizens of Goodsprings were great help. I only had to kill one of the Powder Gangers, they took care of all the rest.

Of course, due to charging into a group of convicts with only a cowboy outfit for protection, I was near-dead by the time the fighting was over. But it was worth it.

Of course, I still limped my way over to Doc Mitchell to get patched up, but who wouldn't?

(Also, I leveled up!)

I decided to spend the rest of the day drinking my rear end off, and promptly passed out on a mattress in an abandoned RV. All in all, it was a good day.

Look it's a recurring thing that they blow anyone who looks at them funny to high hell. I wouldn't side with them even if I knew where to find them.

If it makes you feel any better, I'll shoot a few neutral NPCs that I don't have to. Like that rear end in a top hat who'll wake you up in the middle of the night to babble about the star bottlecaps or something.

EDIT: Also, you get some of the funniest dialogue in the game when you go to Nipton. I happen to like being the Powder Gangers' "Grim Fuckin' Reaper".
