Okay, let's assume that the election was free and fair: how was it legally binding since that wasn't actually a valid mechanism for secession under the Ukrainian constitution?

I'm fairly certain the US leaving great Britain wasn't exactly legal either, the 'bbbut the constitution' is a pretty lovely argument really regardless of your position.

Or the rebels in syria, egypt etc. you really don't want to rest your argument on legalism.

e: It is also part of the UN charter:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-determination#The_UN_Charter

quote:

"All peoples have the right of self-determination. By virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development."

If you accept that the elections were fair (dubious) then you really don't have a leg to stand on if you start trying to prove your case with constitutional law.

In all fairness to the Russians, their gobbling up propaganda on this war is little different than the near universal support of the Iraq war (75-80%) in the US except people in the US had more access to information that the war was a terrible idea (but chose to ignore it). Hell, the media didn't even have the excuse of being state owned yet nearly every media source was completely uncritical of the war.

Uh literally nothing I said there is contentious, you can quite easily look up polling on the Iraq war: http://www.pewresearch.org/2009/11/23/polling-wars-hawks-vs-doves/ see: Iraq right or wrong?

Support was about 70-85% depending on the phrasing of the question. There were no major media outlets opposed to the war and most supported the Bush admin in an unquestioning manner. HTH.

Perhaps you are thinking 2005 on, when people finally realized what a big mistake it was but before that there was solid majority approval. This is really basic poo poo.
