It seems like the datacomputer is the closest thing to the gibson we ever had. I wonder how users views of datacomputers have changed throughout the years.

Anyone, standards make the world go round. What are some of your favorite RFCS?

RFD 420 is a good one.

THE WEATHER DEMO ORIGINALLY DEVELOPED FOR THE ICCC SHOW IS NOW
GENERALLY AVAILABLE. IT IS A VERY NICE NETWORK DEMO SINCE IT REALLY
CAN/DOES RUN ON TWO MACHINES.

Its not the mother of all demos but its a nice demo!

BTW in case you don't understand the magnitude of what the datacomputer is

quote:

The datacomputer is a specialized node of the ARPA network that is
dedicated to the management of a large, shared database. By large we
mean several trillion bits of data, of which at least one trillion
are on-line.

one trillion bytes. wow!

The Best Laid Plans . . .

Dr. Roberts informs me that it is now unlikely that he will be
able to attend the Monday afternoon session of the NWG meeting,
but that he will be able to attend the Tuesday evening session.
Accordingly, the topics of "Network Planning" and "other ARPA
Projects" are moved to Tuesday evening, and on Monday afternoon,
we will take up as many of the items originally scheduled for
Tuesday evening as we can.

The relevant reading for Wednesday evening is RFC #131, not #113.
In general attendees should read all of the RFC's since the last
NWG meeting.

NO HIGH LINK NUMBERS

Because it may be desirable to reserve one or more link numbers for
instrumentation purposes, and because 256 link numbers are many more
than are needed, we suggest that no link number over 63 be used. At
UCLA, we will implement our tables to take advantage of this limitation.
We also note that 32 may be even more realistic, but 64 is certainly
sufficient.

lets reserve huge portions of the address space for unspecified testing purposes
