It has great music, great characters, it's hard at points, you get big and strong, you level up, it's funny, and the best part is the world, it's got the best overworld of basically any jrpg ever. Getting the bird and just flying around and seeing a different side to a bunch of enigmatic overworld features you saw tens of hours earlier is loving amazing. Even small poo poo like going to a weird forgotten corner and finding a chest is a good feeling, or going back with the ultimate key and opening locks that have vexed you for hours.

It's really linear but you never feel the sting of linearity because the game is always fairly open. So there's always something to guide you, but you also have free reign to look around. Even talking to NPCs pays off because they have important things to say sometimes. DQ is like the only game series where I give a rats rear end what the NPCs have to say.

I'll admit I barely care about the battle system, well that's not even true, some of the bosses are fun as hell, like dark jessica or the ogre twins, and they serve the purpose they were built to serve, draining your resources, giving some attrition to the dungeon exploration. Granted that barely matters by the time you get the escape spell. Whoops!

dragon quest is epic win and i like the battle system a lot. people say the games are grindy but they are wrong because aside from the really early games you basically never have to grind. if you want to though metal slimes are way more fun to fight than normal generic enemies so its pretty cool as well.
