He murdered dozens of people, threatened to kill a whole town, was intending to kill all of SHIELD, allied himself with HYDRA etc.
Just because he is a cool character that doesn't mean it is automatically a good idea to keep him on the show. Good writers know when to stick with their initial ideas and not stretch things out for sentimental or personal reasons.

I'll give you GoT, but I have watched every episode of TWD and cannot remember its theme for the life of me.

But yeah, the problem seems to be two-fold. First, as a kid I was paying more attention to TV and secondly, there have not been really all that many theme songs that play at the start of the episode since they started doing that one second intro showing just the title. I was a huge fan of that, but now I want longer titles back for some reason.
