Depends a lot on the trousers - fat guy pants shouldn't be an issue, skinny jeans are. It won't fit in the shirt pocket (my Moto X does, so the slightly bigger iPhone 6 should do) but will in those of a jacket (if you don't mind the worse look).
Also, big phones sell well to women, who more often than not don't even have the luxury of real trousers pockets and carry the phone in the purse, where the additional size isn't really relevant, but the gained interaction space is. I wouldn't be very surprised if Apple actually sells more iPhone 6+ to women than men.

Why would there ever be a need for a phone to have HDMI out?

Getting an iPhone 6 with 16GB? Pay just ~15% more to get 400% storage capacity. ($650/16GB -> $750/64GB)

No, it's 50% more since most people buy phones subsidized. Even more in states that charge sales tax on the unsubsidized price.

That's a shallow way of looking at the true cost of the phone. If you're buying a subsidized phone, it's actually [subsidized price]+[24*monthly rate]. Tacking on an extra $100 to that is a non-negligible but still very small increase.

You can explain the "true cost of a phone" until you're blue in the face but it doesn't matter because it's not how most consumers look at phone pricing. They see a phone for $200, monthly pricing is irrelevant because it doesn't change on what model you get. My phone bill will be $XX a month if I get the $200 iPhone or $300 iPhone or the free crappy android phone. My only concern is if I want to spend 50%+ more today on my phone or not.

I have a friend with a 5 that's been experiencing really rapid battery drain (like 4 hours to go from 100% to 20%, screen off) for some time. I think she has an issue with her power button not working as well. It's the end of her contract so she figures she'll get a 6 anyway. The phone works, is she eligible for the various trade-in offers even at a reduced price? She's with AT&T but I don't know if the Apple store has anything equivalent.

I also thought that there was a certain battery issue that Apple was doing free replacements on. Is it the swollen battery thing? Because I was thinking that she could get a new one, flip it, then get a 6.

If the battery is swollen at all, take it in and they will most likely replace it regardless of warranty.

I just got mine replaced for lovely battery/swollen battery. They'll give you just the phone from refurb stock.
