I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just some QB that I used to know
I was thinking of including something in the Aftermath thread of who currently holds the Title Belt. One way to do this is to say that since the BCS era is over, that FSU currently has the belt. But gently caress FSU, so the other way would be to look at the first BCS winner and track it from there which would give us a current winner of... well, take a look and see and make sure my reasoning is sound. Also, go ahead and guess right now who you think the Belt Holder right now. Don't peak or cheat!

Bold indicates who owns the belt at the end of the season.

1999:
1998 BCS Champs are Tennessee Volunteers
Florida takes the belt 9/18/99 winning 23-21
Alabama takes the belt from Florida 3 weeks later
Tennessee re-earns the belt 2 weeks later
Arkansas wins it two week later
LSU would take it despite a 1-7 conference record and no bowl game

2000:
LSU holds it for 3 weeks until losing to Auburn
Mississippi State takes the belt from Auburn after 3 weeks
LSU retakes it the following week
Arkansas takes it after a month
UNLV takes it from Arkansas the following week, making it the first non-SEC belt holder and closing out the season

2001:
Arkansas rips it right back from UNLV in the season opener
Tennessee wins it the next week
Georgia wins after a two week reign
Florida takes it after 4 weeks
Tennessee takes it after a 5 week stretch
LSU retakes it the following week in the SECCG and holds it until the seasons end

2002:
Virginia Tech finally gets something to put int their trophy case, beating the Tigers in the opener
Pittsburgh takes it after a record 8 weeks
The U takes it two weeks later and holds it 3 weeks until the Robbery in the Desert giving it to Ohio State

2003:
Wisconsin takes the belt after 6 weeks
Purdue has it after a whole week
Another week, another B1G team, going to Michigan
Michigan holds it 4 weeks until giving the PAC their first appearance with USC

2004:
USC goes wire to wire (I am not dealing with the bullshit vacated wins)

2005:
USC would hold it another 12 weeks before losing it to Texas in the BCS NCG.

2006:
Texas would only hold it 2 weeks due to an early season matchup with Ohio State.
Florida would take it after 11 weeks, but not only took the belt but also pantsed Ohio State in front of everyone

2007:
Florida would hold it 5 weeks until Auburn takes it
LSU would take it three weeks later
Arkansas took it after 3OT after a 4 week run
Missouri took it in a bowl game 2 weeks later

2008:
Missouri held it for 6 weeks before giving it to Oklahoma State
Texas would take it 2 weeks later
Texas Tech would raid it from Bevo a week later
Oklahoma gets it two weeks after that
Florida would win it again in the BCSCG after 2 weeks

2009:
Florida would hold it the entire regular season, losing it to Alabama in the SECCG after 12 weeks
Alabama would hold it for the remainder of the season

2010:
Alabama held it for 6 weeks before losing it to SpurDog.
Kentucky finally gets it shot at glory taking it the following week.
Georgia gets it a week
Florida takes it for 2 weeks before
South Carolina takes it again for 3 weeks until Cam Newton stole it harder than a laptop
Auburn finishes the season with it

2011:
Auburn holds it until losing to Clemson after 4 weeks total
Georgia Tech surprises all taking it after 6 weeks
After only a week Virginia Tech gets it a second time
Clemson takes it back after 3 weeks
West Virginia wins it by what is likely the largest margin of victory in the Orange Bowl

2012:
West Virginia holds it 6 weeks before losing to Texas Tech
Kansas State uses dark magic to win it after 2 weeks
3 weeks later, Baylor wins it and finishes out the season

2013:
After 13 weeks, Baylor cedes the belt back to Oklahoma State
Oklahoma takes it a week later and finishes out the season

As of now, Oklahoma hasn't lost, meaning Oklahoma is the current Belt Holder! Or FSU, if you want to ignore the BCS.

Fun facts:

Longest streak is USC (24 weeks).
Number of times the Belt Winner and NCG winner are same: 8
Florida was won the belt the most (5 times) and held it the longest cummulatively (27 weeks)
Only non AQ team to win was UNLV.
Teams that have never won the belt surprisingly: Oregon, Notre Dame, Penn State, Stanford, Florida State

Just thought it would be interesting to trace out.

Shouldn't the title belt start with the Rutgers Queensmen in 1869?

I think there's a cool stat that no matter where you start, it all aligns pretty quickly post WW2.

Yeah the interesting thing about this is that regardless of which team you start with it doesn't seem to take a whole lot of time to converge with the original Princeton-Rutgers line.

A more interesting idea I remember seeing somewhere or other was a lineal "championship" that instead went to the loser, with the condition that it couldn't leave FBS and any tie games encountered pre-1996 would result in both teams coming away with it. As I recall, the starting team was 1982 Northwestern, due to the losing streak. No idea who would have that one now.

e: Oh, here it is. Hasn't been updated since the 2012 season, but the holder at that time was Southern Miss. If I'm not spacing out, the trajectory after that would be to UAB at the end of 2013 and then to Troy in Week 1.

ee: Also, Sash, you messed up in 1990 (USC lost to Notre Dame before they lost to Michigan State) but ended up back on the main track anyway. Weird.

I knew this was floating around somewhere. 1869 to when the Belt guys linked elsewhere in the thread started in 1972. Some rather unfamiliar entities end up holding the belt in the earlier years, including half a dozen small schools in Pennsylvania, West Virginia Wesleyan, a long-defunct athletic club, and two military teams (almost ten years before the US entered WWII, surprisingly).

Congrats to TCU on winning the Belt! Your first defense is against Baylor, then Ok State, and then Texas Tech, so congrats on having it for 3 weeks at most.

Dunno if anyone cares but Troy surprisingly managed to win a game so the current holder of this thing would be New Mexico State.

Also, remembering this thread exists, I'm wondering how much finagling it would take to have a version of this "shame" variant starting with Princeton after the first game in 1869 that doesn't just disappear into the ether or end up stuck in DIII somewhere...

Well, TCU has it back now, just in time for what's probably their last reasonable chance to lose a game (against KSU).

Just like it bounced around the SEC the recent past and previous cycles in the BIG and Pac, the belt gets stuck in a territory.
