I see someone tried a "free***** credit report" site. Or porn. Or shopped at Home Depot sometime in the past year. Or something in between.

One gripe I have with USAA is they don't show $1 preauthorizations (which is what you got hit with) for their debit cards - their online banking assumes that's from a gas pump, and 99% of the time, they're right. And actually show the full gas pump price immediately after you hang up the nozzle.

Some scammy companies will run a $1 preauth to make sure the card is valid, then force a charge through for a lot more a week later. They actually have at least 30 days to do that from the day of the initial preauth.

USAA does have several forms of credit monitoring you can purchase, but the most expensive version is $12.95/month.

The gripe I don't have: they sent me a letter in the mail, emails, and plenty of warnings every time I logged into online banking, starting about 2 weeks ago, stating they had figured out my debit card had been compromised by a retailer (pretty safe to assume Home Depot, since I've been there a lot). Then sent a new debit card. That was pretty surprising. New debit card showed up a couple of days ago, with the typical new debit card stuff, along with a letter stating essentially "we figured out your card was compromised in some kind of unnamed hack; it was at a retailer you do business with, here's a new debit card".

Funny thing is, I have never tried a site like that (though I've stopped others, like my parents, from making that mistake for years), and my USAA card is exclusively for money to get diverted from my paycheck to, then withdrawn for rent at a wells fargo bank. Except a few times I used it with Amazon and retail purchases, but the last non-rent use was well over two years ago (maybe a home depot a long time ago, but I doubt it). Probably why they never notified me of any compromise. Either way, I'm out enough for rent, and probably won't have it for a week at least, and rent is due tomorrow. Yay.

Sucks, but USAA tends to be really good about that kind of stuff.... after the charge has finalized anyway. They won't be able to do anything until then. :smith:

If it makes you feel better, I've been trying to nurse along a 9 year old battery for entirely too long. It'll start the car if it hasn't sat more than 24 hours, and if it's not winter. And I've managed to jump start some much bigger stuff pretty recently by just connecting the cables and not starting my own car.

It was more of a "how long will this drat thing last?" game for a bit, then we had some unexpected household expenses come up. Now it's "oh gently caress don't you dare die before my next 3.. okay fine, 20 paychecks".

So my boss and I were talking about his moving to a new store - Friday is his last day at my store.

He mentioned he wasn't planning on taking anyone with him - then said "unless you want to go with me". We discussed it briefly, and agreed to talk a bit more about it next time I see him.

Between what I know of the incoming GM, and knowing my boss is going to a much busier store with a smaller + denser delivery area (and a lot closer to home)... yeah, we're going to discuss it.

Prime is pretty awesome like that, though I still have major issues with them not allowing you to pick what carrier gets it. When I lived in dorms, UPS and Fedex could deliver to the dorms (they'd drop packages off at the front desk, front desk would call me and let me know I had a package), but not to my PO Box. USPS could deliver to a PO Box that the university paid for, clear across campus - but not the dorms. I learned the hard way that even selecting overnight sometimes still means USPS.. which was more than a bit annoying with a semester's worth of textbooks getting returned by USPS.

Granted, that's kind of a unique situation, but it's pretty common in a dorms.

Ebola chat.

Was watching the local news earlier. They showed a shot of the sign in front of the apartment complex of the family that's been quarantined. Okay fine, there's still several hundred apartments there.

Then zoomed in on the sign that has the building number. A lot of older apartments here have an individual street address for every building - that sign actually had the full street address on it along with the building #, so you no longer need to google the name of the property to get an address.

Then they zoomed in on the front door, clearly showing the actual apartment number, and the anchors kept repeating the apartment number. :wtc:

Then interviewed parents at a nearby school. One parent said she wanted to know "where these people live". If she caught that broadcast, she got her wish. Looks like they've edited the clips that are online to remove that parent's comments, but there's still a lot of video online showing their address.

.... they also interviewed a lot of people who live in the same apartment complex. There was a lot of anger.

I feel really bad for that family, they're likely going to be victims of a lot of poo poo once the quarantine is lifted/cops leave. I'm used to seeing a full address for criminal stuff in a small town, not so much giving out the address of a family dealing with diseases in one of the largest metro areas in the US.

If you need me, I'll be in the darkest nearby corner shivering and drenched in sweat.

Caught this on the weather channel a little while ago. Not sure if it's the fever that made me think it was hilarious, or the fact he walked up in front of a camera and spent a solid 10 seconds straightening his tie and giving a thumbs up, not realizing he was already live.

But yeah, they're cheap enough brand new, I think a current Motorola Surfboard (which includes a 4 or 5 port switch and wifi) isn't much more than $60 at Wal-Mart. It's not cheap, but it's a hell of a lot less than what I once paid for a 2400 bps modem. :corsair:

Damnit. You quoted the pre-edit.

But yeah, my ears were already popping when I hit the doorbell, my radio was blasting a tornado warning while I was driving out there, and the weather went from "freaky calm but a really weird dark green sky and almost no light at 3pm" to "hailing sideways" in the time between my ringing the doorbell and them opening the door. I was really stupid when I was in my early 20s (okay still really stupid, just more experienced).

Don't ever want to be that close to something like that again. I love storms until they're trying to remove the building I'm in from its foundation. And it's also how I learned why it's so important to carry anything beyond bare minimum insurance.

I've been caught in several bad storms since then, while doing delivery. These days I pull into the first thing I can find with a roof (usually gas station), then call the customer and tell them "hey there's baseball sized hail, I'm stuck, I'm gonna be a few minutes late, unless you want to drive your S Class over here in this poo poo". So far everyone has opted to wait the 10-20 minutes for the hail to stop.

edit: huh, watching the news right now. One entire ISD (Arlington) is closed due to storm damage, much of another one (Dallas) is closed due to not having power at schools, and an entire university (UT Arlington) is closed for the same reason (no power). I never lost power, but my insurance companies are going to hate me. Roof damage, garage door damage, car damage, fence damage, tree damage, broken windows on the house. :cripes:

edit 2: okay, damage I've found so far: all 3 cars damaged to some degree (Avalon is the closest to being totaled at first glance - broken windshield, sunroof sits funny, rest of it looks like the surface of the moon, has a bit of interior water intrusion). A chunk of the shingles from the house's roof are missing, gutter peeled off in a couple of areas, garage's overhead door is sitting odd and has a lot of dents. One tree doesn't know how to tree anymore, another is leaning at a non-tree angle. Backyard fence has a funky lean going, we won't even discuss the gates, driveway (which is behind the house) is covered in tree poo poo and random car poo poo. :cripes: At least it's only straight line wind damage instead of tornado.

My dad is about to break 70. I think his mother died in her 40s - she died almost a year before I was born, from cancer. His dad died, as mentioned, in his 50s. The good news is pops is still kicking rear end, taking names, and pissing people off by lighting up a cigarette after he kicks their rear end at tennis.

Dementia scares me far more than cancer. At least with cancer, your mind is (usually) intact, you're just stuck watching your body fall apart. With dementia, you have little to no idea that your brain moved out and left the do not disturb sign on the door.

My maternal grandmother is my last grandparent left alive. She has Alzheimer's... I think the death of my grandfather almost 20 years ago meant that she spent too much time doing the same thing every day, living alone in her house. At this point, she doesn't recognize her children sometimes

The last couple of years that my grandmother was alive, she frequently called me by my uncle's name, occasionally by an aunt's name. :stare:

Welp, appetite returned with a vengeance today. Thank gently caress, I've been beyond weak, and dropped over 10 pounds.

Got a burrito with habanero sauce. Apparently I either lost my tolerance for spicy food in the days that I couldn't eat, or they put 50 extra habaneros in their habanero sauce. I'm sitting here staring at it. I've managed 5 bites, but every time I take a bite I want to run away and hide. This is a burrito place that I visit at least twice a week, and I always get their habanero sauce on my burritos/tacos/etc.

I think I'm just gonna order a pizza.

Just gave it a shot and uhhh.. It's a thing.. There's a reason I haven't touched Linux again in close to 16 years. First is driver support. The manufacturer didn't have any Linux drivers, so I went to the chip set source and got a Linux driver there. Second, I had to extract it then run the make command in terminal, after 10 minutes of monkeying with it it finally worked. If the terminal has to be one of the first things a user touches, it's a failed OS. That is what alienates Linux from being anywhere close to being a viable option for 99.9% of the users out there. It's fine for web/mail/radius pool server environments, aka areas where computer nerds will be operating and maintaining the machine, but for home use forget it, it really offers absolutely nothing over any other OS.

The last several times I tried Linux, I didn't have to hunt down a single driver. Everything just worked, straight out of the box. Even an obscure USB wifi dongle, even a wifi printer. This is a home-built PC, and (Windows) drivers for it have been sometimes hard to find even on the motherboard manufacturer's website. I didn't have to track down a single driver for Linux.

Still use Windows, I've spent way too much money on games to ditch it. :smith:

After using for a bit, it looks like it's trying really hard to skin itself like OS X, but it's still all Linux-y under the shined up turd.

In that case, I really hate to tell you what OSX is based on.

(unix and bsd - not quite linux, but still related)

File sharing is a goddamn mess. I don't even know if it's possible to do Windows sharing without opening smb.conf with a text editor at least once.

I also like that I can leave the computer on for a month or two and it still works the same as when I booted it.

File sharing is a mess even in Windows, outside of server environments.

And uh.. my Win 8.1 desktop only gets rebooted when Microsoft pushes a "gently caress you" update that forces a reboot. I never thought I'd ever defend Windows (this is coming from someone who was once an official beta tester for OS/2, and hated anything and everything from Microsoft), but I've gone months between reboots on this PC. I think I'm sitting at about 3 weeks right now.

8's UI loving sucks without Startisback, but it's stable. And a bit quicker than 7 was.

What? No it's not. It's dead easy.

Not for us. I can click share, it says shared, but everything either times out (the usual response) or after a few minutes says I typed in the wrong homegroup password.

The only things I wanted to share was movies/tv/music anyway. Plex handles that pretty well, and handles streaming to set top boxes like butter.

Probably doesn't help that most of the computers here are running XP.

You could be 36 and couch surfing.

Also weed's the only reason I've even been able to hold food down in the past few days. Very, very, very stale weed; I bought an 1/8 6 months ago and still haven't finished it. I want to puke when I smoke it, but it kicks the nausea into the next state.

This. Friend of mine has a felony and can't really get much outside of hospitality or food service, so he's mostly been working for resorts in Miami.

His reported income this year will easily be at least triple (likely more) than mine.

I managed to wake myself up today with one of the most satisfying farts I've ever had.

It was nearly 10 seconds of pbbbbbbtttttBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP, followed by a very loud "ahhhhh" (and maybe a bit of checking to make sure I didn't poo poo myself). My stomach felt absolutely amazing afterwards, and I'm pretty sure I'll never feel the same thing again.

My life is really super decent. Horrible stuff doesn't happen too often and I usually find a way to trudge through it. But to add to the depression here I bought a 98 Integra LS for my girlfriend and acted a fool when I went to inspect. Broke all the rules on how to buy a used car and am paying for it now. The point of the story is now the car is running ok, new tires have been purchased but the alignment is so bad I'm really worried something is damaged beyond a reasonable amount of repair and we are approaching our limit on how much more to put into this car. Tell me it will be ok AI

The upside is Integras are fun to drive in anger, and pretty easy to work on. They're essentially a Civic with a DOHC.

Also uh, the lower control arms are the first thing to bend when you nail a curb. Might wanna check those out.

We have a cocker spaniel that's as dumb as a bag of hammers.

We have a collie that still can't figure out how to back up; he gets stuck in a corner and starts barking to get someone to help him if he can't turn around easily. He also refuses to actually poo poo/piss in the grass for some reason; the back patio is not something you want to walk on without shoes.

He's very sweet, but I'm guessing he got dropped on his head a few times before we got him.

Have a picture of him and my cat checking out... something. I want to say it was a squirrel, but I took this picture years ago.

Well, I thought I was feeling better. For less than a day.

I'd like to offer a hearty :fuckoff: to whatever the gently caress I have. Except I'm too weak.

The upside: I haven't poo poo myself today. Yet.
The downside: 103 fever :stonk: and hallucinations that are on par with large doses of LSD (this is coming from someone who's ingested enough LSD for entire countries).

Gonna do the ER bit. Have a friend on the way to drive me, no way in hell can I navigate even a parking lot right now.

Still waiting on my friend to get here. I think the only time I've had chills like this is when I had the flu...
