What do you call extra lives in video games?

I'm referring to the abstract concept of the number of deaths a player's character can endure before a Game Over, not Pac Man specifically.

Growing up, I occasionally encountered kids who called them "chances" or "men" (as in, "I've got two more men left!") and it always weirded me out.
