It truly does not matter, your avatar just acts as another character. Obviously you have to keep them alive though so don't make them so weak they'll die in one hit.

Donnel is my favorite character from an rpg ever. Donnel should replace every pretty boy FF character, maybe that would make those games bearable.

the moment you reclass Donnel you can stop babysitting him. It's rough getting him to that point but it pays off.
