Links: Website | Google Play | iTunes | English Wiki | JP Wiki IRC: #terrabattle on synirc TL;DR Just watch the combat trailer. Terra Battle is a recently released, high-concept F2P phone RPG produced by Mistwalker. That's notable because unlike certain fly-by-night Korean IAP dev shops which shall go unnamed, Mistwalker is a company with a serious portfolio and some serious pedigree. Terra Battle's production is directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Front Mission, and pretty much the rest of your childhood too) and the score is composed by Nobuo Uematsu (ditto). Its SRPG/puzzle hybrid gameplay is difficult to pin down, but revolves around arranging your characters in mutually supporting formations in a way that will be familiar to people who have played Yggdra Union or Dynasty Tactics. Why have you read this far without clicking on the Youtube link? The game is scheduled for a global launch on today, October 9, but has been soft launched in Canada for about a month. As you might expect from a game made by people with an AAA console background, the art direction and music are completely gorgeous (if you have a decent anime tolerance; think PaD but with a more consistent art style). It's pretty good. MONETIZATION: THE GORILLA IN THE ROOM The RPG elements of Terra Battle are essentially cribbed from industry titan Puzzle and Dragons, which makes sense given that Sakaguchi is a PaD whale on a scale which would beggar the worst nerds in our own thread. Monetization consists of allowing players to purchase "Energy" e.g Magic Stones at a $1 rate discounted in bulk. Players who don't feel like paying in gain a steady drip of Energy from daily login bonuses and storyline stage clears. Energy can be used to refill the stamina gate, continue a battle after a Game Over, or--most notably--recruit a randomly selected character from an IAP-only pool. Sakaguchi is on the record as saying that Terra Battle should be entirely playable for a non-IAP player and that he wants to be more generous with free stuff than PaD, but who knows if that'll match reality. As for actual content, Mistwalker is going on a bizarre "Downloadstarter" sort of deal where they pinkie-promise to implement more content if the game reaches a certain number of downloads. Considering that the top tier is at 2 million downloads and the game has been getting a slightly obscene media blitz for a phone game (full page spread in Famitsu, what the hell) and that they've apparently started working already, it's tempting to say that this is just a way to drum up some more interest in the game. Currently, there are 30 chapters of story content. A few entirely too rich players with entirely too much time on their hands have managed to burn through the entire game in the month or so since soft launch. I've been playing a similar amount of time without whaling and just yesterday got past the first serious difficulty bump in the game, in chapter 18. There's a fair bit of single-player content already implemented. REROLLING One weird trick for rerolling in <3 minutes that Mistwalker hates! Since a newly created account begins with enough Energy to immediately recruit a random character, many players choose to repeatedly create accounts and clear the tutorial until their first free recruitment ("pull"/"Pact") is a particularly strong one. People who have played PaD know exactly what I'm talking about here. If you're not completely sure you're going to stick with this game for a while, it might be worth it to just keep your first pull and then restart once you know you like it, since the early game will go by pretty quickly once you know what you're doing anyway. Caveat: for a couple reasons, I don't consider rerolling as critical in Terra Battle as it is in PaD. First off, though higher-graded characters are rarer to obtain from a pact, every character in the pact pool is unique to pacts. You will never spend premium currency and get some garbage monster you could farm up in ten minutes just by playing the game. Second, there is no such thing as leader skills in this game, which means that there are no strategies which depend upon owning a specific character. Lastly, the difference between a very rare character and a more common one is far smaller than it is in PaD--the rare character will probably have a gimmick skill or two and slightly higher base stats. For every SS murderboat in the game, there are A or B graded characters who fill the same basic party niche with 90% of the effectiveness, and gain levels faster to boot. Still, at least half of you are going to bloody well do it anyway, I suppose. It is a definite edge as you approach endgame. OBLIGATORY REROLL TIERS TO ARGUE ABOUT Unique named characters are graded B / A / S / SS. The little piece of paper which pops out of the envelope will be gold if the character you're about to get is S or SS. The very first character you obtain is always either Bahl the Dark Duelist or Grace the Archer--these reroll tiers are talking about your first gachapon pull after playing the tutorial. Once you clear chapter 1, you should be able to open your first day bonus in the mail with 5 energy. The game hasn't been soft launched for that long, I haven't played nearly as much as the Chinese/Japanese sperglords, and this is merely my own personal opinion. Still, I'm pretty confident in making these claims. From most desirable to least:
(Almost*) EVERY S/SS GRADE IN THE GAME Alright, maybe this will quell the rising tide of "I pulled <X> and <Y> and I am an indecisive cheeto-guzzing manchild, should I keep my account??" posts. If you're about to climb up a water tower and start shooting at passerby because you can't get two perfect SS pulls, please stop and preferably seek help. People have beaten this game with only farmable dragons. You could beat this game without a single S or SS. Do keep in mind that I don't have $2000 to dump into Terra Battle and thus this is all theorycrafting. If there are any whales in the thread who can correct me, that'd be great. For the record, I started out with Gaiga and got a lucky Jennish pull off of free energy two weeks in. * modulo patches, updates, and downloadstarter stuff SS Amimari: Only SS healer worth keeping now due to 3 offensive sword skills in job 2 and decent attack score in job 3. Amina: Healer with +time and party revive. But if your whole team is down you're probably already up poo poo creek anyway. Don't keep. A'misandra: Healer, worst of the three. Don't keep. Czerkas: Elemental attacker (ice). Gimmick: third job has a spell which increases non-boss time-to-attack by 1. Pretty good. Gaiga: Elemental attacker (dark). Gimmick: unreliable instant death spell and instant death immunity. Final boss spams instant death. Okay. Gugba: Physical attacker (sword). Gimmick: comedic amounts of damage. Very good, but a slow start. Jennish: Mage (lightning). Completely loving bonkers like every other SS mage. Koko: Elemental attacker (fire). Decent offense, life draining passive, self-heals. Durable attacker, basically. Pretty good. Lewto: Mage (fire). Completely loving bonkers like every other SS mage. Olber: Support. Good healing once skilled up, party evasion buffs, taunt-ish effect, some offense. Keep if your other pull was DPS. Piz'fer: Mage (ice). Completely loving bonkers like every other SS mage. Rikken: Attacker (bow). Good bow unit, but nothing special except the +time skill on third job. Okay. Yukken: Attacker (omni). Switches weapons based on job. Weapon triangle is really loving important in this game. Very good. Samantha: Mixed attacker (spear/lightning). Versatile, 2 physical + 4 lightning skills. Negotiator for shits and giggles. Pretty good. Zerro: Mage (dark). Completely loving bonkers like every other SS mage. Sheena: Attacker (sword)/off-healer. Quite versatile, as you might imagine. Pretty good. S Alika: Elemental ttacker (lightning) Best of S tier probably. 4 light skills like Samantha, plus the fantastic +drop rate passive. Very good. Bonna: Support (staff). +Experience passive in third job, but nothing else and no offense. Don't keep. Djugan: Attacker (spear). Based around weapon triangle manipulation gimmicks, but low offense. Don't keep. Ellvern: Support (staff). +time passive, spear offense + levitation in job 2. Deceptively good. Keep if your other pull was DPS. Gatz: Support (sword). The king of utility. Levitation, +drop rate, Panacea. Keep if your other pull was DPS. Gagonago: Support(staff). Similar to Gatz. No Panacea, but you get Frequency Amp and +time instead. Keep if your other pull was DPS. Lunaken: Attacker (spear). Powered Point passive sucks, only 3 offensive skills. Don't keep. Lunato: Attacker (bow). Powered Point, attack skills petrify. Have no idea of the proc rate. Don't keep??? Palpa: hahaha you rolled a storyline character Puprope: Mage (dark). Indefensibly bad compared to Zerro, more a function of how good the SS mages are. Don't keep. Pupropu: Mage (lightning). Ditto. Sha'plar: Elemental attacker (dark). Actually compares well to Gaiga. 4 skills, +time, instant death. Very good. Zafitte: Support (staff). Dear god why. Minor saving grace: Panacea in job 3. If you want Levitation go for Gatz instead. Zerra: Support (staff). Stop. Drop. Reroll. Now. Zuzu: Attacker (sword). The other candidate for best S grade. Czerkas but nonelemental. Still really good, with 5 attack skills. Definite keeper. Notable A/B A'meripact: A Mage (ice). Sky-high magic score and lots of attacking skills; just as good as Piz'fer on offense. No revive/self-heal though. Daiana: A Mage (fire) + Attacker (bow). Versatile, hits hard, problem is that she can't use her bow skills well in third job. Eileen: A Support (staff). Super versatile support: levitation + panacea + off-healing; only problem is she's deadweight until you're hitting level 65. Sn'aip: A Attacker (bow). 5 attacking skills, including a unique skill and Terabow, 1.5x attack passive, sky-high attack. Amazing. Kuscah: B Healer. Heals + 1.5x healing passive + revive + control time. The gold standard, which is good since everyone gets him. Sorman: B Healer. Well, you probably don't need him *and* Kuscah, but if you're on a Canadian account or something he's just as good. Macuri: B Attacker (spear): 6 attacking skills including Teraspear + 1.5x attack passive, but no support or utility skills. Still hits harder than a lot of S grades. O'pari: B Elemental attacker (bow): 6 attacking skills including Solar Wind Bow + frequency amp. Stats could be better, but much better than Amazora. ASSORTED ADVICE

This game is pretty cool so far. I have both an account with Zerro and with A'misandra. Not sure which one I will stick with yet.

This is a global launch, meaning EU also, or not? Have any Europe folks seen it on the Play store, or managed to get an apk working? The (easy, simple) workarounds I use for US PAD aren't working with this game. I'm not sure if there are better region hoops in place here or if I'm just doing something dumb and wrong. I have a lazy day right now and I'm totally up for wallowing in a reroll grind for an hour or two; I'm buggered if I can get my hands on the drat game though.

Just got Kuscah on my first roll. Then some Manmer dude with a car on him for my second. Assuming I'm unlikely to reach the very endgame, is an off-brand of the best healers my ideal pull?

My first pull was an S-rank Sword guy, Zuzu, and I am lazy so I am just gonna stick with him. Better than a B I guess.

For rerolling in this game, same thing as the others? Delete/Reinstall? e: Yep, time to get cracking. This could take a while - my first roll was a B. Zhent fucked around with this message at 13:01 on Oct 9, 2014 |

Got an Amina on my phone after about 6 rolls. I'm not sure the SS drop rate is as low as 5%, or else I've found the one game at which I will have luck rolling - went through 2 other SS before getting her. She needs to put on a pair of pants.

So for re-roll spoofing I pretty much just clear out the data of the game and restart, then use the 5 energy from the mail to do a pull yeah? First pull I got was a B class monster. My OCD is tingling *restart*

There are two files in the app's Documents folder - save-file and save-backup or something. They are pretty obviously named. You can back those files up if you want to save an account, just like PAD, or you can just delete it and you'll start the tutorial all over again Thirst Mutilator fucked around with this message at 16:11 on Oct 9, 2014 |

I have a notoriously short attention span with PaD and/or PaD-likes, but hey, whatever. Downloading now, gonna reroll until I get something nice, and try it out. ... I say without looking at the video or anything. It looks interesting -- different mechanics, anyway, which is nice. Clocks fucked around with this message at 16:45 on Oct 9, 2014 |

Okay, after a couple of rerolls, managed to pick up A'misandra. Even though she looks like the worst of the 3 SS healers from a glance, that's still a really nice pickup.

5 or 6 rolls in, picked up SS Samatha... but her first skill is +10% magic up... so I guess I'll put that away and keep rolling. I forget how much I hated this process. e: oh, on second reading, it says characters who don't get any combat skills. She gets two later on, so maybe she's not too bad to start with?

I started with her - you'll get her to 15 really quickly, when she gets her 80% proc rate thunder skill. I haven't regretted starting with her yet, and elemental attackers are always useful. If you aren't tired of rerolling yet I would keep going though - I stuck with mine because it was roughly my 70th roll, and the 2nd or maybe 3rd SS I ever got :[
