I should have known sooner. I've been passing out quests to people for years. "Hey could you get me some Burger King? I'm really hungry." "Anybody seen my Iphone?" "I need the carcasses of 5 squirrels, please."
Whenever I'd give people exp. I just assumed that it was something all people do. I just hadn't really found my main quest line yet.
It'd be one thing if I were an NPC with more importance, but I think I'm in a starting area, for like...basic training missions. Is there any way to break out of this? Can I become a Hero? Or is me even asking this just another part of my programming?

Give people am escort quest, to take you to a more dangerous place (hence to supposedly needing an escort), then you can stay there and train, you're in a no combat zone now is the problem
The distinction between npc and pc is all in your mind
