does that game still try too hard? i remember being turned off because it was so hardcore and when you were killed the screen would just go black and there was no indication of what the hell happened

you should never do the same thing twice in insurgency, that's like the first rule. competitive counterstrike is all about like sending one guy b every round to repeatedly smoke/flash and blindfire corners after smoking, then rotating

insurgency is a lot more free form and unpredictability is the core of doing even okay at it. it's pretty fundamentally different from CS imo

theres still no kill cam or anything because that would be kind of contrary to the spirit of the game in a lot of ways where you're supposed to actually figure out how you're getting your poo poo ruined and take steps to solve it

I like TF2 I feel it incapsulates everything casual FPS like battlefield or cod are going for while having a lighthearted tone and a bunch screeching british kids in my ears

I also like jabbing pencils into my scrotum and eating printouts of deviantarts worst furry porn

How to play TF2

1) Acquire Gunslinger
2) Place mnisentries near the point in KotH games
3) Sit down and enjoy a beer, irl and ingame while the enemy team cries

From what I played of Insurgency the only difference is the objective is in a different place sometimes and all that means to anyone who's played the game longer than 2 hours is doing the same thing in a different hallway every other round.

Wormskull
Aug 23, 2009

It requires about as much unpredictability as CS does outside of the necessity of changing things up because the objective isn't where it was last time.

nah the hats dont have any effects as far as I can tell

I think some of them get silly particles if you rack up a lot of kills wearing them

some of the new weapons are hella confusing but I like how it keeps the game somewhat interesting for a mindless shootmans fps

pyro is still hella good because pubbies dont know how to fight at range unless they have a big scoped rifle or a bow

the objectives change according to gametype in location and capturability as well as how they're tied to respawn waves. once you have the maps memorized it becomes a little more rote but "same thing, different hallway" is only really a thing if you're playing with a big dumb team full of pubbie idiots who don't want to coordinate something clever. granted that happens a fuckin ton

insurgency is about teamplay and kit balance. using smokes together on outdoor maps, listening to squad leaders, having a good weapon spread in your squad, knowing what the enemy is doing so you don't just get rolled

its like RO2 + CS and Red Orchestra fuckin owns

Wormskull posted:

i mean more in actual firefights and stuff. strategies tha twork in CS never work in insurgency and vice versa. you don't chase people down or wallbang much in insurgency

It sounds a lot like CS to me all else (the team and experience level of people playing it) being equal, except CS has better shooting and other things about it. If you have to play a more simulator type one I guess it's alright and better than RO2 or battlefield or arma or whatever, maybe not RO1. But CS is better for a similar kind of thing.

What makes tf2 "casual?"

Wormskull
Aug 23, 2009

Well insurgency kind of straddles between simulation and CS like the guy said but I think that's sort of a mistake and it does neither very well. I get why people would like it since blowing someone down with a AK in "freeaim" looks kind of cool the first few times but that's cooler to do in RO or probably Arma as well.

youre joining the wrong servers

i like to get my dodgeball on and play other stupid mods every now and then but there are really good servers with players that know what theyre doing in them. iirc i used to play on crit sandwich servers and a lot of players there were loving crazy

it sort of hits the middle ground between pure sperg ala ARMA, which is too much, and something like CS, which is more traditional nad doesn't have ironsights/prone/sprint/quicker death damage model. plus the only other similar game is RO2 and that poo poo is old and full of weird nazis

emphasis on random elements, everything being madcap and goofy, the humongous amount of sidegrades that are balanced pretty slapdash

its casual, a game you play casually

why do you think that has to be an insult???

last time I played on crit sandwich everyone took the game way too seriously and they were loud and abusive in allchat which is not what I want out of a casual experience where I get high and run around at high speed shootmansing people with a doofy looking shotgun that has a 'hype' meter

the best serious fps is chivalry medieval warfare because it can be as serious as you want it to be when your ping isnt one thousand or the server browser isnt broken or the server refuses to spawn the objective or any number of the really annoying technical issues that plague that game

Well 'Casual' implies their isn't any skill, or that the skill-ceiling is low, which isn't true at all. non-stock Weapon balance is poo poo, and a few of the class mechanics that they've added are pretty lovely too. Engineer Buidlings/Airblast ugh.

Also the general focus on melee weapons makes the game really unfun unless you are on a good server. But, if you play on a server with competent players, the game is still super skill based and I wouldn't really consider it any more casual then any other "serious" game.

the skill floor is really low though b/c you can be decent at the game without a lot of investment or technical play which is what casual implies dude

you can get into it 'casually' and do well

also I havent seen a lot of people focusing on melee weapons except demomen with their giant swords and screaming which I cant really hate on b/c it looks rad as gently caress and its fun to airblast them away as a pyro

maybe you just need a more tightly balanced and competitively-focused fps to play like quake or something, dude
