My theory is that closer proximity to Proper Leftism deepens the political force that reactionarianism can command. McCarthy, for instance, was contemporary with the socialist party's rule over Milwaukee. It makes sense that when your largest city is run by outright socialists - when it is, in fact, the only major american city that can claim this - then anti-socialist hysteria would become a particularly potent factor in your state's politics. Couple this with wisonsin's rural population balance and the gee-gosh-why-can't-people-just-be-left-alone conservatism typical of rural midwestern homesteaders.

Wonder if Sandoval will end up on a Veep shortlist now that he's not running for the Senate. Trump/Sandoval 2016 would be pretty great, albeit not as great as Trump/Martinez.

I will go against the grain and say that I appreciate Scott Walker's aethetic values. His desire is to resemble schlubby middle-management guys everywhere. Why he wishes to do this is a mystery to me, since pretty much everybody hates their damned supervisor, but there is a certain clarity of purpose there that I can admire. what I'm getting at is he reminds me of Mr. Cogswell from the Jetsons, but with slightly more hair.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the senate's most notorious warhawk made a bad candidate in 2008 - a year when america was knee-deep in two expensive and increasingly-unpopular wars - regardless of past willingness to break with his party on domestic policy.

Tigntink posted:Carter started off his presidency by pardoning everyone who draft dodged. Carter's main issue wasn't anything to do with policy, but, rather, that he brought in an outsider staff that didn't understand the importance of schmoozing the correct people. The Carter administration is the best example of how the electorate can never really escape Establishment Politics.
