Got gifted this game a couple days ago and it's been pretty cool. I think it'll be much more fun once they get the hybrid classes in, though, especially since one is a stealthy caberjack and that sounds hilarious.

Fifteen dollars was the Kickstarter buy-in, it was on sale for $22.50 for a few days when it first hit Steam, and now it's hit its actual price of $30.

The whole gaming community can't stop talking about how great the game is and now that Doublefine knows what it has they're jacking up the price!

doublefine knows better than anybody what early access is really about : selling unfinished games, jacking their prices up over time as they reach "completion", and not actually completing them

Oh I don't know, when I was judging it as a 15 dollar indie game it seemed pretty dang good for the price, hopefully they'll polish it enough that I'd say the same thing at 30, supposedly there's a few more months left to go before it's out of EA.

I recently fired up xcom: enemy unknown with the expansion pack and there were a number of things that felt really different about it. Like how aliens activate in packs and react when they first see you, whereas the cadence reacts only on its turn and only if the individual unit can see you. Massive Chalice's tactical screen feels like it needs a lot more management since you have to replace people when they die and for most of the game using old people to speed up research is pretty important. RE's are very different since they can actually have negative results and XCOM's are positive (unless you fail the mission) or neutral if you simply don't fulfill the request. XCOM maps feel like they're about the same size, but the XCOM unit's movement range is way higher, however you're constrained by moving from cover to cover unless you want to get your people killed. Massive Chalice has two mission types and one of them appears only once. There was also less branches in the research trees. However the focus on melee combat, re-positioning enemies and stunning them made for a different tactical experience.

I've played through an earlier build than what's currently available and I didn't know anything about what they planned to implement (except hybrid classes), so I wasn't disappointed or felt that some promise hadn't been fulfilled. I honestly really enjoyed the game when I played through it and after finishing it, I'd be very comfortable calling it an XCOM-lite and I do mean that in a good way. I still don't think it's up to 30 dollars in value yet though. Those player models look ok at a distance but whenever they zoom in, it's pretty bad. I'd love some pictures in the random events too.

To be fair I was suckered with df-9, because I believed that steam wouldn't knowingly allow someone to walk away from development. They did, but they've changed their terms to attempt to stop this lovely behavior. I take your lol in the spirit intended, so have a festive gently caress you in return.

My problem with chalice is that as it currently stands, it's horribly bland. Within the first hour you've seen everything, and then it's just a slog to finish.

This is a really fun game that's being actively worked on. I'm not really understanding the hate. I backed it at $20, am already greatly enjoying it, and enjoy both this game and XCOMM.

What do you mean again, did they ever say it would be finished this year? Schafer finished the script a few months ago and they just finished recording the dialog, who thought it was coming out before the end of 2014??

Brutal Legend was loving awesome. gently caress the haters, gently caress EA for the lovely advertising, and gently caress Activision for the cockblocking and meddling. BL was originally intended to be an RTS multiplayer game in the vein of Herzog Zwei, the singleplayer stuff was pushed by Activision who wanted to turn it into a Guitar Hero licensed game. If you're having trouble with the easy rear end RTS missions it means you're not fighting with your troops. The enemy general does it, you should too.

This style of game is the granddaddy to the MOBA which everyone slobbers over. It even has towers and everything.

There's a real lack of variance in Massive Chalice that means I've left it well alone until it moves further along, but an 'also-ran' with XCom isn't going to elevate them to a AAA state, and when you start comparing the output with contemporary studios, it's looking dodgy. Don't get me wrong, the art style is okay, and the overall concept is sold, but the gameplay is dull. Hell, the best you can manage is 'it's good'.

Mr.Pibbleton posted:

Nah, I'm pissed that DF-9 was abandoned so quickly and the reasoning given was that they couldn't afford to keep developing it. Which then raises the question what the blazing gently caress they expected to happen. I tend to then juxtapose this with;

quote:

“We wanted to keep working on Spacebase for years. But Spacebase spends more money than it brings in, and that’s just not something we can afford to do any more.”

Stunning lack of self-awareness, and generally a toddler understands that before you bring a product to market there is a cash outlay. This guy;

Wants you to pre-order, then walk away if enough pre-orders aren't met. This does not bode well for his or double-fine's future attempts to secure funding, bearing in mind that he already burned publishers.

And I'm still waiting for the source code release that they promised for DF-9.

al-azad

I totally understand getting pissed that DF-9 was dropped but how does admitting their faults make it a "stunning lack of self awareness?" If anything that makes them more aware. They thought the game could bring in revenue to justify future development. It didn't so they pulled the plug. What other options were there?

Double Fine are the only ones being transparent about making mistakes.

Hav posted:

Battlezone 2 recently and Sacrifice when it came out on GOG.

The non-standard RTS is a genre I love: Delphi's missions in Giants Citizen Kabuto, the original Dune game, Command & Conquer Renegade, Sacrifice, Battlezone 2, Herzog Zwei, Brutal Legend, Team Buddies, Future Cop LAPD's free combat mode, Kingdom Under Fire, Bladestorm, Divinity Dragon Commander, and so on. Past resource management, troop movement, or base building into an otherwise innocuous genre like FPS or hack-and-slash and you have my wallet open.

But it's a decisive genre, one you see about as rarely as the puzzle platformer. Maybe they really are bad games but I don't think so. A programmer on Battlezone 2 said it was an issue of getting too far away from people's comfort zone. The predominant opinion of BL at launch was "Loved the demo but died at the first stage battle WTF?!?!"

Did you miss the fact that Massive Chalice isn't in that nebulous genre of sandbox games that are constantly expanding to an unclear list of features before being called complete? Minecraft is the grandfather of this early access push of starting low then rolling high and that took 2.5 years to go from alpha to 1.0 with the same subset of people calling out 1.0 as an excuse to raise the price from beta.

Spacebase's writing was on the wall from the start. They said up front it was one of their most expensive projects by like 3-8 times. An expensive project promising updates indefinitely until the point when they finally conclude no more work would be done with it. And that happened, just at a point far earlier than anyone expected. This is nothing like Massive Chalice, or any of their projects at all.
