Do what this guy said, but also buy a lovely winter beater and run it into the ground if you must. The 300ZX is too cool to let rust away. Spending a grand on a lovely beater is going to get you a lot more for your dollar than spending those same dollars trying to keep the 300ZX clean dailying it through the winter.

slidebite posted:

I'm going to counter that. Spend $30, fix the drat cables already, tackle the cooling issue and just drive the loving thing in the winter. It's not like that car is a collectors item at this point, if ever. If it rusts out/you run it in the ground so be it.

I drove mine for a few Northern Alberta winters and it wasn't that bad. Just keep it clean and avoid the worst of the road conditions.

But gently caress a ford escort. Vaguely where do you live? I'm sure we can find you something better than that.

You have no idea how much joy it brings me, as an internet stranger, to finally see that negative lead replaced.

I can sympathize with you on this one Sperg. AI has been harsh on you, but I know how it goes, spending the majority of your money on the kickin rad 80s car of your dreams, not having reliable employment, etc, it's very easy to feel like you're in too deep.

I have (some) mechanical knowledge and my car is the literal exact opposite of a basket case like yours, but that does little to help that depressing feeling of being aware of everything wrong with the car and being too poor to buy expensive European parts feeling guilty while the list gradually gets bigger. The fact that I already know how to fix everything makes it even more soul-crushing.

Luckily for AI I decided long ago not to make a thread because I foresaw the 24 pages of angry goons while I move along at snails pace with my thumb up my rear end.

You seriously have your work cut out for you, and any sensible human being would sell this car the second it ran and never think about buying a Nissan again. Again, worst case scenario, $2500 gets me the exact same year, color, and type of car that I already have except N/A instead of (shittily put in aftermarket) Turbo.

Buy an e30, it's literally the German version of the AE86 and there's tons of them. AE86 vs e30 is the best apples/oranges example of two cars I can think of. Or buy a Miata because you don't know anything about cars and it's a lot harder to dig yourself into a hole with the availability and cheapness of miata parts.

I used to have these feelings as well until my own grandpa sold me a car in the dark and lied about/concealed the rot and accidents it had been in. Realized selling a car brings out the scumbag in everyone and that's just the name of the game. I've only ever bough one car (from an enthusiast) where the previous owner was up front and honest about the condition and flaws with the car, but it helped that I took the time to read through his entire post history on multiple forums before trusting a thing he said. So basically what I'm saying is spray it and sell it, who gives a gently caress.

quote:

Just buy a loving corolla/camry with your navy check and learn basic maintenance. Resist the urge to buy another basket case for the love of god.

Universally accepted, but universally horrible advice. Corollas camrys civics etc are routinely beat to poo poo, neglected, and owned by teenagers and commuters who will drive it from A to B with zero maintenance until the wheels fall off. There's a long list of better, more interesting, and often better kept cars you can find for under 5k or whatever price range we're talking. Keep in mind these are words coming from someone who is telling OP to buy an e30, which is saying something. I'm not saying "don't buy a boring car," just "don't buy a civic, accord, camry, corolla, etc"

OP take your time and search for the right car. Try to find something with maintenance history that was enthusiast owned. Don't just spring for the first thing that catches your attention or you'll end up repeating the same error. Buy a naturally aspirated car without a motor swap. You know how most car ads have a list of modifications? You want one that doesn't have that list. One where the list is stuff like "____ replaced with oem parts at _____ miles" Since you said you're willing to travel... If you want to buy a kickin rad 80's car again go buy it in Seattle/Oregon/California because rust isn't an issue over here and it's probably the best used car market in north america for cool/unique older stuff anyways.

Realtalk suggestion: If you find a rust-free decent-paint 5speed e30 specifically a 325is, 325es, or 318es without the e30 tax seriously snap it up. As long as the shell/paint is good, there are only a small handful of jobs that sperglord couldn't be walked through, literally everything you could want to do to the car is incredibly well documented on the internet, there's a very loving good bentley manual available for the car. The entire value of the car is in the shell paint and interior. Sure parts costs can be a bit high for some things (though a new motor is literal pennies) but it really isn't bad compared to any other car that comes to mind when I think "rwd, 50/50 weight distribution or close, limited slip diff, manual." Other than the Miata I really can't think of any other car that fits that bill while also having literal babby level writeups for any job you could think of widely available on the internet. Plus you'll never outgrow it, because like the Miata basically every motor swap imaginable has been done before and documented.

Not to say it's a good suggestion, the chances of finding a good e30 that isn't taxed to poo poo in 2015 is pretty slim, but they do exist and you'd be a fool not to add 325is/325es/318is to your list of craigslist search terms. Quite a few of those cars wouldn't make the trek back to Chicago in their current condition, so add another $800-$1k to get out trailered home (better hope the driver isn't tweaked out and doesn't gently caress your car up!), or pay someone out there to fix it who has you over a barrel.

Come on dude I know this is AI but let's be realistic given the course of this thread so far.

e: literally every e30 ad with that mentions leather seats actually has vinyl, sooooooo

e2: If you have your heart set on an e30 and you're going to buy one of the ones listed this one is probably the best: http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/cto/4857604177.html since it's the only one I would trust you to drive home

e3: Figure another $600 in parts+labor to replace the timing belt, water pump and the rest of the cooling system on any e30 you buy that doesn't have receipts showing it was replaced in the last 5 years/60k miles, read the bmw thread to figure out why

This guy doesn't know e30's. Shell and paint condition mean everything and specs/options mean gently caress-all. The poverty spec e30's are the best ones. Tan sport seats are like $50-100 tops and I see them given away for free regularly, nobody wants them. I was baked at 4am and thought that vert was a manual though, gently caress. That one actually looked p decent too. Again though, those weren't "hey buy this e30" links for op, they were just examples that you can buy an e30 and have a couple thousand dollars budget to fix it for the price of a 2001 camry with 200 thousand miles on it.

Because those posters don't know anything about e30's and lump them in with the maintanence/reliability reputation of more modern bmw's? I'm dead serious with the recommendation and I think it's both a car that would make OP happy, and a great babby's first car. Half the cars he's looking at have 80's/90's era turbos, I think it's a fair compromise to recommend a car that's sporty but naturally aspirated. Let's see, the e30 is dead simple to wrench on, the vast majority of the car can be disassembled with the supplied tool kit, indestructible iron block i6 vs all the turbocharged stuff OP wants to buy, literally any job he could ever want to do probably already has a play by play writeup with pictures on r3v/e30tech/etc. Outside of the mustang gt recommendation it really doesn't get more straightforward if OP is going to buy a sports car. Miata too but after thinking about it, OP's probably too big of a guy to enjoy driving a miata, I can guarantee he'd hate it. Outside of european parts costs and maybe 1 or 2 common pain in the rear end jobs like the flex disc, an e30 is just as easy for OP to wrench on as a camry.

The same people telling him not to buy an e30 are recommending cars like the is300 and prelude. Just think about that for a second. The vast majority of cars being recommended or posted by OP are significantly less reliable, more difficult to work on, and specifically have a lot more electronic woes than an e30 would, but for some reason he's supposed to write off the e30 because he wouldn't be able to handle maintaining it?

I agree with the overpriced argument 100%. If OP isn't willing to wait a month or two for an untaxed unfucked e30 to pop up he should buy a mustang gt or something instead. Untaxed good e30's exist in the PNW, they just sell quick so you have to be looking. Oregon's full of aging old people who own clean, stock, maintained e30's and don't have a clue what they're worth.

Also I already posted that I would inspect any car he wants to buy near Seattle for free, and I think someone in Portland might have said the same thing. Can guarantee I wouldn't set him up with a lovely car.

OP you should look through InitialDave's posts because he made a perfect summary on how to drive a manual.

Or instead of basing the car he buys off of the fact that he doesn't know how to drive manual yet (which will last for a couple of months tops depending on how much he drives/how much city driving he does etc) he could go walk on to a lovely used car lot and test drive any random shitbox he sees with a manual, the shittier and slower the better. Or he'll just learn naturally in a few months anyways. We've all been there.

Bolding that so Sperglord reads it and does exactly that, before he buys a new car.

Mustang gt would be a bit easymode, but I think an eta or something would be just enough low end torque to not be so forgiving, but be forgiving enough that he can feel confident he won't roll into someone's car on a hill. Thing to note though, is that e30's have like double the clutch throw of most cars, which kind of forces you to learn where the bite point is etc. It's a pretty common occurrence for people who have been driving a stick their whole life to stall my e30 the first time they have a go at it.

If OP can deal with a 2 seater with a small trunk, the miata is just-as, if not more fun than an e30, a bit easier to work on (they are both easy cars though,) with cheaper parts, more parts availability, and more junkyard availability. The e30 suggestion is pretty much a compromise of the miata suggestion, trading off all that for a roomier interior/back seat/huge trunk. At the end of the day they're both fun, reliable, lightweight 5sp rwd cars that are easy to work on.

Oh, he's also in 540i 6 speed territory. Maybe even e39 540i 6 speed territory. Or really clean i6 e39 w/ new cooling system territory..
I bet this dude would take 6.5k and this thing is sweet as hell. The interior/exterior combo is one of my favorites and p rare. http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=342625
Cool cheap celica, I don't know much about these but this looks promising http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/cto/4841831404.html
Unfucked supposedly garaged miata with no price http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/cto/4856512981.html
There were a bunch of other decent looking miatas but I don't know enough about them.

Sperglord will never be able to show his face at the steak n shake

edit: But at least he'll be able to do sick burnouts in the parking lot with his new car

If the Scirocco and Integra look half as good in person, at those prices I would just buy them both tbh

Also, that Stanza Wagon, what's up with it? Because it looks awful.

You were supposed to read the ad in 24's voice.

240sx is a good on-paper suggestion I personally didn't bother making earlier because I didn't think he would find an unfucked one. With op's new take time and buy the right car approach, it's another good fit for op. He'd be hard pressed to find a suitable one though, because he needs to stay away from any PO fuckery that isn't dead simple to correct. Good ones are doriftu taxed about as hard as e30's too, but they're within his budget easily.

Yes, all of the yes.

tell the owner your friend from the internet wants to look at it and post an email address I can send my phone number to. I'm busy the next few days but I can probably figure something out with the owner next week. I don't know jack about 240's so I'll try to bring a friend who does. But at the very least I can give my impressions and tell you if its a rustbucket. Ad looks good to me but it would be nice to have an opinion from a goon who knows a thing or two about 240s.

At least now Sperglord understands Nissan ownership: buy it off Craigslist, get in too deep, flip it, buy another Nissan off Craigslist.

There's a pretty solid list of 80s weaboo cars in his price range that aren't any harder to maintain than a foxbody or camry or whatever you guys are suggesting he should do. Really don't understand the point of rehashing this.
