Window units are surprisingly good. I own a house with a 35 year old AC and it kinda can't keep up with the heat in the summer but I can't afford the 5 grand to replace it (it's also my furnace and gently caress combo units are expensive). I got a window unit to supplement for around $200 and it's a champ. Does better than the whole house unit, really.

35 year old AC? God drat just spend the dosh to get a new one. The efficiency on those things are amazing these days and will pay for itself pretty quickly compared that old one

Treat yourself by going through the actual real massage experience every so often. It’s v nice and relaxing and 1000x more than a chair from SkyMall will ever be

I've wanted to de-pill my mattress and sleeping bag and some other stuff for a while now, and picked up this Conair Fabric Shaver.

it's a goddamn miracle tool, is what it is. and the little THIK THIK THIKTKTKTKTHIKTK as it quickly and smoothly sucks in and severs the little pilling and loose threads on the mattress is so insanely satisfying, it's ridiculous. after a thorough run-over with this thing and a followup vacuuming, my mattress looks almost brand new when it looked heavily used before, it's kind of amazing. Plus, of course, the rough slight bumpiness of the pilling is no longer there. I love it and can't recommend it enough, and you just pop the little "chin" of the shaver off to empty out the stuff it's collected.

This tool is 100% something I never knew existed but now that I’m aware that it does it makes perfect sense. What a delightful thing

I need a goddamn back massager. If it works on my neck that would be great too. Oh my god I am in constant pain

How can I even tell what a good back massager is? I got a kit that attaches a massage ball to a jigsaw but I immediately bent the part that connects to the jigsaw

You might try passive hanging until whatever you get comes in. It's a great way to relieve back and neck pressure that could be the result of tight muscles from sitting all day.

Any hiking pole recommendations? Looking for a < $50 option that's not a Chinese brand that's a random jumble of letters.

I had their trail back series when I hiked the AT and swear by 'em. These are probably fine too. Black Diamond is a solid brand

I had a wildly huge blister that I used that on and it was the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. Like a hot brand on my heel.

Worked amazing though

I'm looking for a universal remote.

Basically, I just need a Roku-style remote that I can reprogram the volume controls on. I only need the volume up/down and mute buttons from the center remote, and my roommate tends to misplace it (sit on it) regularly, so having it all in one would be nice.

Bonus, but not required would be if it could do basic controls for the Blu-ray (navigation, enter,, pause, play, eject) she won't touch that one (too many buttons).

Also being able to replace the sling and DTV buttons with anything else would be a good bonus, but also not required.

I've heard great things about the Logitech Harmony line.

This won’t help your current situation but get one of those vinyl under sheets so sweat and piss don’t seep through into the mattress.

I haven’t noticed much of a temperature change. I sleep hot anyway so a sheet and the one leg out seems to do me just fine on my old IKEA latex mattress.

You can use the shoulder ones or some that wrap around your arms. I use to use the forearm ones when I worked delivering furniture and they are great

Fs in chat for The Wirecutter. Anyone got a good reviews website?

At launch, readers will get nine free Wirecutter articles a month before being asked to pay for a subscription on the 10th article. Only a small proportion of Wirecutter’s readership currently reads more than 10 articles a month, said Linda Li, Wirecutter’s general manager. A small percentage of users visit the site more than 50 times a month. Ms. Li said the site will experiment with the free-article threshold.

The Times will make some Wirecutter articles free periodically “if they provide strong public service,” said a Times spokeswoman. For instance, Wirecutter’s coverage of air purifiers will be in front of the paywall when the subscription product launches amid the wildfires in the western U.S., the spokeswoman said.

Up until now, Wirecutter has generated revenue primarily through affiliate partnerships with online sellers, including Amazon.com Inc. When a consumer follows a link on the site to purchase a product, Wirecutter receives a commission on the sale. Those affiliate relationships will continue, providing a way to monetize nonsubscribers.
