Yeah I'm in CENTCOM and I'm not impressed so far. So I might have been saved because people pissed off my boss so she's not going all out. She gonna get a pre-made door covering from Party City that looks like a wrapped present and call it a day. Works for me. Thanks for the decorating ideas though. They made me laugh and I needed that today.

I'm going to end up being that person who reads all the regs because I'll be damned if I'm stuck with all this stuff.

I honestly don't know what you'd do anyway. We always just called our CAOC LNO and he'd (I'd) walk over to the appropriate desk and ask the question or whatever.

I was there at the end of 2011. With Contractor HDI, who was also an LNO, and a mutual friend from training. Also two of my old instructors, a former nav and a pilot from my squadron, an ADO from one of the other AWACS squadrons, a NATO AWACS LNO we knew from training, and I think I knew the C2 Plans guy but I can't remember who it was. Not what I expected when I showed up on the floor. Edit: I managed to get sarcasm across mirc a couple of times. I didnt think anyone was picking up on it until I got a phone call from a crew after they landed. I wish to hell I could remember what it was, but apparently the controllers were laughing hard enough they lost track of what was going on. My MEB wasn't started until like May 2014 because they wanted to wait and see if I'd recover. My package was submitted to the VA in early June. Just got the results today. You can keep track of it on the VA e-benefits site, under View My Status and then Compensation and Pension Claims Status. Then you have to click your claim and it will show a progress bar. I was getting updates faster from the site than from the MEB office up until the final decision, which still isn't updated in the site. But I may have gotten that early because I am medical myself.

Yeah I'll agree with that. I had a bunch of cool folks on my shift, even the marine O-6 that ran things from upstairs. Those showers are far and away better than Dhafras though.

The scif was a loving blast. Since we were not constantly watched over like the ops floor, we pretty much chilled and watched tv/hosed off. e: the bathrooms were 10x better than when I was there in 09

I was in the trailers for like 3 weeks waiting for the BPC to have a room. At ADAB you had to shower, then rinse your hair again to get rid of the mold that was falling on you. The "solution" was that after showering you had to spray bleach on every surface of the stall. I can't say that it didn't help, but it certainly didn't solve poo poo.
|
# ? Dec 13, 2014 07:35 |

I never stayed in BPC, but the worst part about sleeping in the trailers was being on nightshift. People would slam the doors constantly during the day. I propped open the door with a mop bucket. The door hitting the plastic bucket was quieter than the door slamming. The AC ran constantly but at least I was able to sleep.

# ? Dec 13, 2014 19:52 |

Turn on AC, generate white noise, go to sleep. Also do how we did and get dehumidifiers for everyone for white noise and also not getting mold on all your poo poo.

xaarman, I should have clarified. I meant CENTCOM at Al Udeid. My last trip there was in 09, and I was with the base comm squadron, so my CAOC experience is limited to my friends' muttered curses. My takeaway from this is "Still the place where morale goes to die, but the BPC is nice."

Is the CAOC/ops in general that bad at Al Udeid/Dhafra? Every in my shop who's deployed out there either went to the AMCC and loved it or was night shift and slept in front of a SIPR terminal all night. I ask because I'm trying to jump on a deployment out there and I'll end up randomly filling a slot in some ops floor.

It depends on a lot of things. Rank, how often you walk past SNCOs, etc. I flew at Dhafra, and it was loving great in 2008. The showers were disgusting, but whatever. 2009 there were some additional restrictions on dumb poo poo, but nothing really too bad (like reflective belt usage, that kind of poo poo). You could tell there was a more CONUS mindset, though. In 2010 I went elsewhere, but heard that the trend was continuing. At the same time, I was hearing from friends on other platforms that the Deid was getting a little more relaxed. 2011 I went to the CAOC and didn't really have any problems. My job was easier than I could've imagined (I found out why they actively did NOT want to send an SD there, it's a loving waste). If you stay in the CC (trailers) they suck, but it's not a loving tent. The bathrooms also suck. But if you get to stay in the BPC it's a loving dorm room. You share a bathroom and kitchenette with one other person, but you each have your own little bedroom area. I only saw my "roommate" like two or three times. Food at both bases is pretty good. The only times I saw or heard about any real complaints (beyond general "I miss my family" stuff) it was when SNCOs or DOs with nothing better to do were hawking on folks for little poo poo, like a PT shirt coming untucked. Edit: I would go to either of them for a year before willingly going back to Tinker. Hell, I chased a job in Saudi further than an instructor gig in the reserve AWACS squadron at Tinker (didn't chase it at all).
