I'll be the first to admit I don't know a whole ton about any given wrestleman so maybe CM Punk really is a sly business dealer like that, but I get the impression that this wasn't his angle at all and he really is a doof who thought high-level MMA would be a cool thing for him to do and he simply got the fringe benefit of covered medical care.

The basic background, and really the reason Punk left wrestling, is that wrestling provides no medical care other than what Vince McMahon decides to pay for out of the goodness of his heart. There is nothing contractual. Most of the reason wrestlers do commercials and whatever is so they get a SAG credit and therefore insurance.

UFC took in a wrestler in his late 30's and really no demonstrated MMA ability on the idea that it would pop at least one buyrate. Surely Punk intends to fight, but he got into UFC on the strength of a Japanese-style striker gimmick and a high profile, so by definition UFC got worked.

Also you either have to be a total carny and/or extremely lucky to get to the top of the WWE, it's only nominally a merit-based system and Punk's look is the opposite of what Vince pushes given a choice.

That may all be true, but if it truly was always just about the insurance all along, why not do what everyone else does as you say and get a SAG credit, sparing his fragile ego the embarrassment or inconvenience of redundant interview questions, losing Kumite-style Rufousport smokers and being called a coward on the internet for ducking Mickey Gall? Surely the man with the Pepsi logo tattooed on his flesh is not above selling out for a few TV spots.

Basically,

It's by no means on the level of Frank Dux or anything, but a ton of pioneer-era MMA fighters have questionable spots on their early records from back in the day when copycat promotions and one-off events were popping up everywhere under no real athletic commission supervision so everything was kind of on the honor system.

If you take a look at Chris Lytle's record, he's got an RNC win from 2000 over touted newcomer Beaver "Beaver" Beaver in the touted BBC - Bad Boy Competition, which we only knew took place at an indeterminate location in the US. Lytle also allegedly had another fight on the same card, but only he and one other person actually fight more than once so it doesn't seem like it was a traditional tournament setup.

In this specific case, the obvious answer is "most if not all of what happened at this odd mystery event is highly embellished but it's from a time when recordkeeping wasn't good enough for anyone to call anyone else out on it, but I like to believe it really did happen and it was just like in the first X-Men movie when some jackass called "Wolverine" beat up people in front of a dozen drunk Canadians in a bar for $200 and free beer, except instead of Wolverine it was some beaver-themed mutant who got his rear end kicked by a firefighter from Indiana instead.

i don't know what smoker fights are, but i remember hearing about his practice fights where he had about twenty and they said he maybe won one of them.

Smokers are unofficial things where your gym brings in people to spar hard with you like an actual fight, oftentimes while a bunch of people crowd around the cage to cheer on and some people judge the fight in the event it should go to a decision. The idea is it helps you get a feel of where you are at on a competitive level and helps you understand what it's like to be in an actual fight, if you haven't yet. I don't know how effective they are at accomplishing these goals and hard sparring often has very bad consequences in terms of unnecessary damage and risk of injury, but that's what they are and it probably is not a great sign he's 1/20, and it's also probably bad that he's had in the neighborhood of 20 at a gym like Roufusport that is already known for going too hard and having a gym bully problem.

Brock Lesnar's UFC debut and his second-ever fight was in the comain of a ppv against former heavyweight champ Frank Mir. I have no clue how CM Punk's popularity with wrestling fans compares to Lesnar's back then and I also know Frank Mir obviously carries a different level of name recognition than Mickey "Some Guy" Gall, but regardless I think it is safe to assume that people will buy into a new product if a pro wrestler they like is involved. Also keep in mind the UFC itself is much more popular and immediately recognized now than in 2008, so there's probably less of an unfamiliarity hurdle for Punk to clear.

How far could they go before they faced repercussions from the athletic commissions? I'm thinking they just wouldn't medically clear a match like Giant Silva vs. Akebono.

Scott Coker of Bellator is currently an active case study for this almost down to a t, and the answer is "if you cherry pick your commissions and act unethically enough to falsify medical reports, extremely and dangerously far"

I know it's a bad arm punch, but what exactly is wrong? Is he not timing his hips with his arms? Mistimes a weak distraction jab, and basically commits his whole body to a tepid uppercut to the body?

I don't train and am not particularly adept at analyzing striking by any means, but the main things he's doing wrong that even I can tell are defensive. He's got his chin straight up and extended outward, he isn't moving his head and his hands are way down while he throws slow, weak, aggressively lovely combos, so anyone halfway worthy to fight in the UFC would wreck his poo poo right here in an actual fight unless he happens to just have a chin of solid granite. Without seeing his lower body it's hard (at least for me) to tell if he's doing some obvious bad things that are robbing his punches of torque and power they could have, but he's probably not trying to throw rocks at 100% power in sparring while documentary cameras are rolling, even at Rofousport.

Obviously sparring is not a real fight and obviously we have no context at all for this exchange, so it could be at the end of a long day of training and he could have been doing this same combo drill for like 10 minutes so he might just be dead tired and have nothing left in his arms, so it is possible this is not as bad as it looks. He's still showcasing some really bad defense here though, and if they were filming b roll any longer than a few minutes and that's still the best footage they could pull for a trailer on a higher-end documentary, that's a very bad sign even beyond the obvious aspect of "37-year-old untrained pro wrestler."

Upon seeing what is ostensibly Punk's best quality of sparring compared to Gall's, most people here (myself included) feel extremely comfortable saying Gall is going to obliterate Punk.

What's most fun to consider is based on the fact that Gall's career afterward will consist of crushing three cans making their pro MMA debuts, we will still have no reason to believe Gall's even truly good enough to deserve his spot on the UFC roster.
