The best zombie game is pandemic with all the outbreak cards. Just pretend the diseases are different styles of zombies.

I seriously need to rip off the mechanics and print that game with zombie minis. I'm pretty sure I could make a fair sum of cash.

I've mostly been getting casual party games over the past year or so, but I was thinking about getting something weightier. I have 50 dollars on my Amazon account, and want to put at least some of that towards a board game. My favorite game of all time is Dominion, so Temporum seemed like a logical next step. I know that 7 Wonders is lighter, but is probably easier to teach and more extensible for seating players. I've also never done a worker placement game before, so I was also looking for good first steps into the genre. I'd like to optimize against these factors between those three options:

  • Price. Can't be over 50, and ideally less.
  • Accessibility. Most of the people I would be playing with tend towards the less intense side of board gaming. All of them like Dominion and Catan, but I feel like that's the upper limit.
  • Time. I'd like to keep a session at around 45 minutes to an hour.
  • Extensibility. Expansions are a plus.

Any opinions based on that?

Castles of Burgundy
Dominion expansions?
Stone Age
Forge War

EDIT: Looks like everything's done so disregard this post. And my sincere apologies to that one guy who is either upset that I'm giving stuff away or that I don't like Kemet. Or both. I dunno.

Alright, it's time for the annual purge of the games that don't get played often enough. I could drop these off at half price books but I hate doing that when things can go out of print and I'd rather have them to go to folks who will use them. I also once threw away a copy of Avalon Hill's Civ and Advanced Civ (later rebuilt from scratch because god drat) and as such am now pathologically unable to throw away a board game.

I'm trying to get rid of the following:

Netrunner
Dungeon Petz
Memoir 44 with Pacific Theater expansion thingy
Summoner Wars master set with the Filth expansion thingy
Kemet
Nations

They're all decent to good games (except Kemet, I stand by disliking that one even if everyone else loves it), but they just don't seem to come out often enough to justify keeping them around. They all suffer from being almost as popular as something else my group is into.

Here's my system:

If you want a game, post and claim it. My email address is my username at yahoo, so email me an address for shipping and I will mail it out to you. One game per poster. Go ahead and post a second request if you'd like and if no one else wants it, I'll throw that in too.

Once I get everything sent out and you get a game, buy me a 5-10 dollar amazon gift card to cover shipping and send it to my email address.

Edit: Should probably mention I'm in the US and can only really ship within the States. If there's a question, I can look into how much shipping is elsewhere but I suspect probably too much.

Nice gesture, but I kind of want to hate you since I wanted like three of those :)

The best way to learn is by playing close games, so you can see where things went well or poorly for you and think about things you could have done differently. One-sided games between players of widely different skill levels aren't usually that educational.

Depending on your area Chess still exists in schools.

Yeah, the descendants of Draco. Both allow you way more access to the hex tile decks than you really have any business having in a 2p game.

Getting your economy on lock is basically doing the explore action and only the explore action until you can no longer explore any more. It becomes kind of a rote system. I recommend the expansion to help mitigate this, as you can place ancient dreadnought tiles where other players homeworlds would be. They also don't contribute to dracos win condition, so you can begin with a more formed, more hostile Galaxy. Either way though, don't play planta/descendants in a 2p game.

I love eclipse so much I bought the expansion, I need more nerdy friends.

I have never in my life run across a game with such poorly written rules. There are pages upon pages of questions, responses, folks chiming in how their actual games have come to a halt for 30-45 minutes of "lawyering" to try and ascertain what the rules might possibly mean-and I, for one am becoming convinced that there are Grand Canyon sized holes in the 'logic' of this game that all but kill it.

And I am even willing to go there. To say "Yeah, once again, the author is contradictory/unclear, and our house rules are ____." But for you to act as if you know the answers and then edit my answers-is very Orwellian. Respond to my writings if you wish. You have NO permission to 'fix' any of them....

I was commenting about how people on the internet get outraged when something they say or like is challenged, not on the game.

FYI - In general I value your well thought out responses and input into games. Calling attempt at humor Orwellian was slightly over the top :)

I tried to buy High Command that way in Janauray. I posted about it in the thread, but basically it went this way:

1) Shipping was as much as all the poo poo I was buying. (Like $100) But whatever, it was a birthday self-present.

2) They shipped the stuff to my country, got here in five days.

3) Customs delayed it for A MONTH, arguing I need to register myself as a professional importer or an imports business to get the package. Registering myself as either kicks me up a couple notches on the tax hierarchy, forcing me to pay extra taxes for owning a business I don't actually own.

4) When I checked with Customs, there wasn't anything particularly special about this - it's just the default system they've got in place when it comes to imports. I told Amazon, they said the package would be written off as lost in shipment, gave me back my money, gave me a discount code and told me I could send them an email if I ever wanted to do that exact same purchase again. And you might need to pay them again a % of your total purchase just to "clear odds and ends".

Supposedly this is going to change come December since the current administration is going out and it seems the neo-liberal candidate has the biggest chance of winning, but still - incredibly lovely situation, to the point where print and play has become my only option.

How about a goon sending them to you?

Neither of us had played before and we made some errors with movement, tactics were laughable until the end when it was to late. I liked the game enough to want to play it again when we have time.
