I'm thinking about picking up arcadia quest and have the dark souls game coming in the mail (because even though I only play trad games these days I'm still a dork) -- does anyone have experience with explaining the former one to newbies? I'm really looking for a dungeon crawler kind of game. Used to just wing it with heavily houseruled d&d/gamma world rulesets, but maybe an actual professionally produced game would work better. Sorry if the thread is full of this, checked the last few pages.

Well, pledged for the gloomhaven second printing, from what I've seen it's a good game to crawl through with friends.

Anyone here have experience with replaying Gloomhaven? I'm fine with persistently changing my Pandemic Legacy box (great experience/game, btw) but wanted to keep that one around for guests/more people than just a party or two. I was thinking about just making the stickers into fridge magnets.

The best worker placement game for 2-3 players I've played is Lords of Waterdeep (officially 2-5 players), does it outperform that one given you have 2 players?

Oh I didn't know dudes on a map was the name of a genre, whoops. I have stone age, LoW, and agricola... But despite their bgg rankings I'd rather play any other game

Yeah I think you can tell I'm not the most knowledgeable trad gamer haha. I'll keep those in mind along with blood rage and nexus ops, some others I saw being mentioned favorably.

I have that game, but didn't know it had MoM. Will try. Also I live in Europe so shipping from the US might be expensive.

I played Imperial Settlers twice before giving up on it. Egypt won 2/2 times, and it never really was close

Of all of them I would play everything a second time with enthusiasm except for Cosmic Encounter The game just feels so sloppy and loose and that there isn't that deep of a strategy. Can someone change my view?

I sort of enjoy this game but it takes too long on average and the game length is also extremely random, ranging up to several hours in the worst cases. While the diplomatic part is enjoyable enough, the Destiny deck kinda ruins it. It'd be a nicer game if it lasted half an hour on average, didn't randomize your targets, and didn't have broken combos you can just RNG into without any thought. Basically a convoluted way of saying I like the art and variety of alien powers.

Also, I'm ordering Mage Knight after demo'ing it. We made a few mistakes, but if you don't try to cut corners and stick to the rules when starting out it's not that bad. Takes a long time though, so I don't think it'll see much play since our attention spans often don't stretch past an hour or two these days.

Yeah we ran out of funding as well and we got beaten in our last match. It was close, but definitely requires more careful play. P:L is so much fun :3:

Yeah it's fun enough but you really need a fun gaming group so the duds (anything with 4+ players and the Hate for example) don't cause it to be shelved forever right away. One of my friends owns all expansions and it does make a difference, though. I wouldn't play the base game like I would with, say, Dominion etc.

Good isn't objective. If it were, we wouldn't be discussing it here.

Rutibex posted:

The other factors (like balance, replayability, depth of strategy, randomness)

These things are subjective too and really depend on your group. The value of balance is largely dependent on whether players prefer asymmetry over symmetry and/or are very proficient/willing to break games open.
Replayability is dependent on the group's need for variety. Depth of strategy doesn't have to mean more fun either (consider time spent waiting on other players), and randomness is such a general term it's pretty useless as well.
You can go all the way from liar's dice to chess, random to predetermined. Is chess a 'better' game because it's less random?

We lost in April last time, and now smoothly won two in a row with the medic and quarantine specialist to keep disease load low while the researcher and scientist churned out cures. Previously we kinda discarded the medic and went for a more mobile strategy, but his power to clean clusters of disease early on really owns. We made the six required military bases permanent after upgrading blue and red thrice/twice, it's really nice.
