Has Kemet replaced Chaos in the Old World as the OP recommended war game then?

It's so hard to pick the next game to buy. I really have no criteria to make the final decision on but I think I've narrowed it down to Chaos in the Old World, Kemet, Agricola, or 7 Wonders.

Since the 7 Wonders discussion continued after my post about my decision between it, Agricola, Chaos in the Old World, or Kemet, maybe I can get more advice.

If I have Eclipse, should I not go with the latter two since I also don't have a worker placement game? The Chaos theme wouldn't bother the people I would probably play with, and in fact they would probably embrace it. It's random if the group would be 3, 4, or 5 (possibly more, but rare).

I've played Agricola once and I'd definitely like it. I also believe it's on the longer side though and with Eldritch Horror being my other newest game, maybe one of the other shorter ones would be better.

Chaos wouldn't scale to three very well, and requires the expansion for 5. YMMV whether adding the Horned Rat ruins the experience - some people seem to think so, I don't.

Kemet and Agricola both scale quite well.

Yeah I know Chaos is just for 4. Just letting people know that my group is sometimes 4 because if it was never, then Chaos wouldn't be an option.

Played Eldritch Horror for the first time and have some miscellaneous questions and thoughts.

First I'm surprised it's talked about as much here because there is so much random dice rolling. There were a lot of items that some of us bought that gave rerolls, but still.

We were playing with 5 and using the starter ancient one Azathoth and it was so brutal. We didn't even finish the first mystery until we were down to 5 Doom. We didn't feel like we were doing anything wrong, but I wouldn't even say we were keeping our heads above water with how bad our progress was. The first mystery we got was the one that spawned 3 eldritch tokens in one spot on the board and we had to use two clues, move to the tokens, and "encounter" them to get them put on the mystery card. It seemed a lot harder than what mystery two was, but it was late and we didn't have the willpower to get reamed anymore knowing we would lose.

I picked the Astronomer and he seemed very worthless. My action was to use two clues to kill a monster and my passive was to use a clue instead of losing a sanity. This makes it sound like clues are in great abundance, but they definitely weren't especially when they're needed for the mystery. My starting possession was a spell that I tried to use early on not knowing what it did so it backfired and I would have lost it, but we decided to give me a mulligan but then I lost it on the first mythos. Other people's items were permanent and only had good stuff.

Are you allowed to look at the monster's stats freely? It seems necessary so you know to send a high strength or high willpower guy to fight them. We also felt like there was no incentive to fight the monsters. It was so anti-climatic when we killed one especially the epic monsters. Rarely did we get anything from them. Some people were also stuck trying to close the gate after the monster and it took 3 more tries to do it so they weren't really enjoying it.

Do you collect the possessions off a defeated investigator when you pass their encounter? It says to put their stuff with them, but it doesn't say anything about collecting the stuff after, so I don't know why it says to keep the stuff around.

What do the Eldritch Tokens do that you add to the Omen Track? We had one added to it, but nothing happened after that.

Overall it just seemed to drag on so we weren't even getting the theme since we would just say blah blah blah Willpower check when reading the cards. One friend said "I can't tell if I'm having fun or not" which is never good.

For Azatoth the token on the green omen, at least if IIRC, is that when the green omen rolls around you move the doom track down 1 for every green portal that is open? It's been a while since I've played it

That's what happens by default for every omen. When the track hits the omen, all the gates that are of that omen cause doom to go down by one. The eldritch token was placed on the green omen from a research card I think, but it didn't say what it does. Earlier I solved a clue I think that told me to remove an eldritch token from the omen board, but there weren't any. The eldritch tokens were also being used as counters on certain mythos cards and if they hit 0 after some reckonings, we would lose.

I believe you read or described this wrong: from memory, you can spend 1 sanity instead of spending a clue. So you only need 1 clue before visiting the mystery location you talked about (where you spend 2 clues after succeeding the check to progress the mystery), as long as you're willing to spend a sanity instead.

Also, if your group was having trouble killing monsters, encounters at the Tokyo location can help with that.

Yep I see that I managed to read it wrong all game or it just didn't register. I didn't even get my first clue until we got near the time we quit at 5 Doom though.

Thinking of getting Dead of Winter and then two of the following for the other ones in the Amazon B2G1: 7 Wonders, Five Tribes, or Castles of Mad King Ludwig.

Thought 7 Wonders because it's another good game to get people into the hobby since I don't have a solid group really. Between the other two I don't really know. Games I usually play with my friends: Eclipse, Eldritch Horror, Dominion, and Castles of Burgundy.

Anyone else have an opinion or can counter the positive elements pointed out? If BSG was in the 2 for 1, I'd probably just get that since I've played before.

I played Kingdom Death Monster yesterday and I was pretty impressed. Everything is very high quality and the gameplay was fun and worked well. The RPG-lite aspect was really appealing to me since my friends and I really like Eldritch Horror and a number of us play D&D.

I'm really interested by the business of the game. I don't think I place as much value on the really cool miniatures and I've never been big on collecting nerd toys, so I think it would be really hard for me to spend the $400 (I think?) on it when it reprints soon. My friend with the game also has every singe expansion pack and they sound incredibly expensive due to the miniature and premium appeal of the limited editions.

I'm curious if anyone knows about the development. I'm looking at the Kickstarter page and it looks like you only needed to pledge $100 to get the game. Did they honor that price? I would totally spend $100, but wow he must have been taken a loss on some customers while squeezing profits out of the big whale customers buying all expansions to cover it.

Kingdom Death Monster sounds rad but good god it's expensive and good god is it full of male-gaze boobies.

A review I was reading says a campaign takes 30+ hours to finish. I assume the game is played over chapters or something? How's it all work? I wish there was a discounted version without the miniatures. I'm fine with boring ol' cardboard tiles and poo poo if the gameplay is good, not really into the whole expensive warhammer miniature building aspect.

It's definitely a campaign. It takes place over 25 lantern years. We only did the prologue showdown, the settlement phase to finish year 1, the year 2 hunt, and the year 2 showdown. That would probably be like 3 hours.

The boobies are all optional minis and not included in the base game.

I'm surprised that Dead of Winter is still so high on BGG since it gets ripped on here. I thought the recency bias would have worn off by now if that was the case.

Trying to decide on a new game now and leaning towards Terra Mystica just because I feel like based on my smallish collection, I can't go wrong with the top games and I currently only have 2 of the top 10 on BGG. I'd like to get Pandemic Legacy but don't have a consistent group.

I don't normally have a consistent group since I've moved a lot, but I'm back where I grew up for the summer with my old friends at the moment. Here's a huge disaster that happened during our first April game of Pandemic Legacy last night.

We were 3-0 leading into this game. Black is our COdA. One guy ends his turn and adds a third cube to Algiers. Next person plays and draws our 2nd epidemic, bottom decks Istanbul where we have a research station. We resolve the epidemic card and then reveal the Legacy card for April explaining the Faded. We then top deck Istanbul. Outbreak there and chains to an outbreak in Algiers. Zombies everywhere. Next person's turn, plays turn and draws Algiers. Another outbreak there and chains into Istanbul again. Next person draws third epidemic and bottom decks Moscow which obviously has zombies already. Outbreak in Moscow, chains to Istanbul, chains to Algiers, chains to St. Petersburg, chains to Cairo and we lose the game. Five of our blue cities are now Faded cities. We're wondering how this next April game and the future hold in store. At least blue might be easier to eradicate going forward...

Only other one other than Atlanta is in Ho Chi Minh. Plan for next game is to use the Ops Specialist to discard a card and fly into Istanbul and put a military base ASAP, so that the Quarantine specialist we just upgraded with the adjacent quarantine from bases can fly in, quarantine, and get out over, and over, and over...

There was a post on reddit the other day about recency bias in game reviews. Lots of the top BGG games are very new as we all know. I've also seen talk here about how the reddit list compares to BGG compares to our own thoughts here. Reddit and BGG are fairly similar and easy to look at for recommendations.

My question is, are there games that are severely underrated on both those sites in our collective opinion? There might be no answer to this because there will be tons of different opinions, but maybe the most experience posters/players have seen a common theme.

For example, I don't think I have enough time nor want to spend as much money as it would take for me to ever consider buying this game Argent you're all mentioning because it's ranked 430 on BGG. Same thing applies to all forms of media really.

Someone mentioned that a 3 hour Eclipse game for 4 people is long, but I don't think my friends and I have ever finished that in under 3. I think one problem with some of these bigger games is that we play them once or twice and they take a long rear end time because no one knows what they're doing, and then they think they're always going to take that long and don't want to play anymore. Maybe we're just dumb and slow though... or too smart and we have AP?

I won't be surprised when a Gloomhaven thread gets started, but until then I have a question. Disclaimer: I have yet to play.

I know people have discussed the 'legacy' elements before, but I never really considered not going ALL IN to them until now. I'm wondering if anyone has used the removable stickers and how smoothly the process fits in to the game?

I imagine using them so that you can play the game again in 5 years would be better than using them so you can play two campaigns at once. Putting stickers on a character sheet only to then have to take them off for when your other friends come over later in the week sounds terrible. But playing an entire campaign and then busting the game out when your good friend moves nearby in two years after his residency and being able to start fresh from zero sounds great.

I'd think this tracker https://ninjalooter.de/gloomhaven/scenarios would be better for the two groups at once thing. Could also replace using the stickers, but maybe that's too digital.
