This is now the official thread for any financial and/or career goals for the 2015 year.

I'll start things off with some current figures:
Currently at a revolving debt load of $-12k (all credit cards)
Yearly post tax income of $39k for 2 people (married)
Monthly expenses $2.6k including mortgage and no car payments.
Current savings totals, $1.2k including one months pre-buffered expense budget.
401k held at max 4% match until debt reduction occurs (26yo total, $17k between us.)

2015 Goals:
1) Pay off 2 credit cards @ $4.4k and an additional $2k in the final card (remainder of 8k)
2) Save an additional $5.8k for a $7k savings total
3) Release (now partially) completed Android game
---If successful, release iOS version
4) Take on $7k in additional freelance web development clients
5) Don't spend any money in a casino unless it's on drinks with free music

Just found out I am approved for 2 months of regular overtime at my day job that should come out to a total of about $2.5k! Well on my way now.

Also for my freelance side gig I've:
Registered an AZ Trade Name
Registered a Skype number for calls/messaging
Completed the website
Purchased an initial contract outline

I still need to revise the contract and simplify it a bit, and also design some business cards but I am feeling pumped.

Savings is up to $1800 now and the month is budgeted and paid in full already. The best news is I am making 1.5x my normal paycheck through the end March.

We had some pretty granular blow money categories in YNAB until now but I kept cooking the books with those number anyway. This month we are trying a single cash blow money category with disbursements on the 1st/15th.

My wife's income is variable but we are on track to save another $1300-1900 by end of month. Hoarding money has been a lot more motivating than paying down credit cards in the short term. It will be nice to get the emergency fund up to snuff. Then we can start making legitimate $1k+ payments to the credit accounts instead of these $50+ payments we've been making arbitrarily.

:feelsgood:

EDIT:
The real test will be our combined birthdays this week. We got free rooms at a Harrah's casino for 2 nights and Mom sent us $100 blow money. We don't plan to gamble, but food/drinks and the movie theater / bowling alley next door could add up quick too :/

Are monthly updates a regular thing for this thread? No mention of it in the OP. I'm cutting some of my goals down to more digestible versions so the quote block isn't so huge. Click the linked post to read them in full.

It just sort of happened. I updated the OP.

If you meet some goals or feel like monthly benchmarking by all means update the thread. It's not a requirement by any means.

1) No progress beyond minimums until savings goal is met.

2) Savings now up to $3,248.

3) Progress has been pretty good, expecting an April release.

4) This has changed focus. I've actually decided to shop around for other full time positions that would double my current my income (I work part time now.) I've updated my resume, my website, applied to 3 positions, and joined a monthly industry mixer. It feels really good to be moving in a direction again. With my current job security I have the time and leverage to shop around for a best fit.

5) Went on a little trip to the pine country this weekend and the motel we stayed at had shuttle service to a casino. We got $40 in free slot play and walked away with $41.75. Never had to put a dollar of my own money in and cashed out every spin that won. I had like 12 tickets adding up to the 41 which was hilarious but at least I wasn't recycling winnings into losses.

-----

2.a) On top of all of that, I discovered that my late fathers estate is finally closing after 2 years. Two mortgages worth $70k+ total were barred from claim for not filing their paperwork in time. They will repossess the properties at what would have been a market loss for us. That is huge because it makes the estate solvent against the remaining claims and leaves a sizable $5-7k to the remaining heirs. It may take a while to finalize but that will really move our savings or credit card debt needle, depending on where the goals are when the resolution comes about.

2.b) 2014 was the first year of my wife being a full time contractor and her estimated taxes were way off due to (we think) personal payroll taxes. We'll owe about $2-3k. Ouch. We'll know for 2015 I guess.

Well, sorry to drag the thread down, but my wife and I are separating. At least we have our debts paid off (apart from a pretty small student loan of hers) and a small chunk of savings to help out. And we're on speaking terms, so the chances of self-immolation by lawyer are pretty small.

Anyway, my financial goals for the year will need some revision once the dust settles. I worked out a monthly budget for myself alone, and it looks like I'll still be able to put away $500 a month, so that's something. :unsmith:

Yay for ending being married within our financial goals :suicide:

I know of a couple that essentially can't divorce because they are upside down in over 700k in debt and don't make enough individually to separate debts/assets. This is probably good news in a messed up way :unsmith:

This one is good! woot

4) Take on $7k in additional freelance web development clients
:derp: Turned this one into a different goal. Decided to change jobs and went from approx 35k gross to 60k gross! Start that job on the 13th.

3) Release (now partially) completed Android game
Stalled on this one :/ it's been a busy month though.

2) Save an additional $5.8k for a $7k savings total
Took a massive tax hit this year, so savings is basically down to zero. Boo.

However, I will be receiving approximately $8623.41 in inheritance funds in the next 2 weeks or so. :hfive:

1) Pay off 2 credit cards @ $4.4k and an additional $2k in the final card (remainder of 8k)
When the inheritance comes in we will pay off the cards in question, and that should leave us with a healthy enough e-fund balance to move both goals forward.

Our estimated budget futures with all the debt, increased income, etc places us being debt free with 7k in savings by EOY or shortly after depending on wife's freelance income.

He's probably burned out by focusing his time on getting Dogs Can't Budget to actually budget that he has no time for his own budgeting.

Lmao yeah that was my first thought too.

I know this is anti-budget, but when I made all non-monthly personal expenses single weekly cash envelopes, our budget got a lot easier to follow. All fixed and estimated monthly expenses like bills, gas, groceries, pet care, are logged individually. Any money spent on clothes, bars, restaurants, gadgets is all spent from cash. We pay ourselves a fixed cash amount every Friday.

You don't get granular tracking of blow money, but that was the part that pissed us off. I don't want to have to enter 60 convenience store transactions a month if the amount spent is accounted for and planned. We also had an issue that 'going out' money would blend with 'sports' money, would get borrowed from 'clothing' money. Simplifying it works better for us in that regard since that was our use pattern anyway.

5) Don't spend any money in a casino unless it's on drinks with free music
I blew it! But I won $30 on my first spin and actually had the discipline to walk away. :/

4) Take on $7k in additional freelance web development clients (Now new job instead)
The new job is going awesome!!! I've learned so much in the first few weeks any my take-home pay has increased from $1100 to $2000 per paycheck

3) Release (now partially) completed Android game
Headed to Australia for a wedding next week so I'll have loads of time to wrap this one up! Almost 2 weeks of down time.

2) Save an additional $5.8k for a $7k savings total
The dust has settled after the tax burden. Our total cash on hand at the moment is ~6k, we have roughly 3 in expenses so really this one is back to square one for now.

1) Pay off 2 credit cards @ $4.4k and an additional $2k in the final card (remainder of 8k)
This one is on hold until the Oz trip is wrapped up. Since I changed jobs I won't have enough PTO to cover the whole thing and I'll take a pay reduction those 2 weeks. It was bought and paid for by my wife's parents so backing out would have been more expensive (and bogus) than just taking the reduced pay.

Now that I have my first take home numbers at the new place, we'll be able to sit down and make a balanced budget. I opted to do additional withholdings from my paycheck so we don't hit the 1099 issues with my wife this year. This plan is to apply 100% of my wife's income to debt, and use my income for the budget and expenses. Any surplus will send half to savings and half to debt.

I think we're gonna make this happen!

Bonus news
The new job is 6.5 miles from my house in a very bicycle friendly community. Full bike lanes, crossing buttons at the street side, all residential, and a bike/pedestrian only freeway overpass. I've been biking 3-4 days a week and it's been great. only 3 flat tires so far hahaha.

Additional news
We are back on the cash system. All fun/entertainment purchases come from a shared $100/w fund, with an additional personal $100/mo for non-sharing fun moneys.

Both small cards were paid off! But our remaining balance changed on the remaining (death in the family and other weak excuses..)
New totals:
High Balance / Remainder
$1,853 / $0
$3,812 / $0
$11,864 / $11,257
Total Paid: $6,272

2) Save an additional $5.8k for a $7k savings total
We are holding a consistent 1k in savings and $3k in checking, this should be an easy thing to accomplish in December.

3) Release (now partially) completed Android game
---If successful, release iOS version
I lost my vision and moved on to another project which I am procrastinating on. I did complete a game jam entry so that's something :/

4) Take on $7k in additional freelance web development clients
Not freelance, but I am making an additional 30k and my wife is up about 45k this year. Considered done.

5) Don't spend any money in a casino unless it's on drinks with free music
We failed this, not hard, but failed. We've spent about 500 total on gambling this year which is a massive reduction and sustainable long term. Glo-stick Bingo is just a fun Saturday night and is cost controlled. I'm okay with it.

Down to $5k balance. I was really hoping our bonus checks would come in, by EOY. But when they do we'll be debt free except for the house!
Also I don't know what I was smoking on those balances but our high water mark for the year was -$17.2k. So we actually paid off over $12k this year! Boom!

EDIT: Bonus #1 is slated to get here on the 31st, with a post tax estimate of $1850. Gonna push that card down to $3k for $14k of debt repayment :D

2) Save an additional $5.8k for a $7k savings total
We've been keeping a 3k balance until the cards get sorted since our monthly expenses are pretty static.

3) Release (now partially) completed Android game
4) Take on $7k in additional freelance web development clients

Both of these became moot points. They were both goals when I was working part time. In April I took on a killer new full time job. Our income went from around ~$48k/y to $120k/y so that trumps any of that nonsense.

5) Don't spend any money in a casino unless it's on drinks with free music
We play Bingo every week. It scratches my gambling and music itch and it's a fixed cost at $40 for the both of us. I'm cool with that. Also we have a Vegas trip planned for Feb. and not only will we be debt free for it, but we have been funneling weekly cash into envelopes for it. This is the first trip we've actually meaningfully budgeted for! Vegas is my thing and it'll be nice to be paying in cash!

Other figures:
$22k in various retirement accounts
$39k in home equity (just shy of 19%)
$18k in paid off vehicles

I'm ecstatic on how well we are doing under 30! The goals shifted but I feel that's fine in light of all the positive changes.

Gimme that gang tag please!

Last week at bingo I was one number away from a $1000 blackout bonus game and my number was literally the next number in the hopper. All he had to do was say it :argh: but someone else called bingo on the previous number right at the last second.
