I want to talk about games that give physics and common sense the middle finger just because it's more fun that way. I'll start with one that I'll call a bit misunderstood, it's called Bionic Commando, it came out in 2009 and it's fun but let me tell you why. First off, everything to do with the arm feels fantastic. From grabbing dudes and careening into them feet-first, to pulling heavy machinery to just swinging around and flinging yourself through the air. A good deal of the enemies in this game basically demand that you become good at using the arm, and the environments are both gorgeous and offer plenty of opportunities to swing around. I'd recommend it to anyone. Ever. Tell me about your favourite larger-than-life games, guys.

Psi-Ops immediately springs to mind. This was a PS2 game from 2004 and is one of the very few games where mind powers were actually utilized in a fun and creative way. I have fond memories of standing on top of loose objects, using Telekinesis on them and then basically being able to fly around on said object. That was just the start though as you could get really creative with it in any given environment. Allied with all the other powers you got during the game, such as Pyrokinesis and Mind Control and the like, you could have hilarious fun throughout. You could also try and play using mainly basic gunplay if you wanted so you never felt rail roaded through. A shame the ending was so utterly poo poo and disappointing though.

I would say Just Cause 2. I bought it for $3 on a Steam sale expecting nothing, even though it got pretty good reviews. It is an absolutely fantastic game. The parachute mechanic makes no sense in the real world (how does that thing keep packing itself?) but the gameplay options that the grappling arm + parachute open to the player are infinite. The storyline is ridiculous, straight out of a bad 80's movie, but it fits perfect. Highly recommended.

I love the Crew for this. It's got some problems, but building a supercar to ramp off everything in the countryside isn't one of them.

This seems like a perfect place to bring up Dodonpachi games and their escalation of ridiculous secret bosses. 1995: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vD3NfZgc3Yo 1997: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2p5X7cxcYcU 2002: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-1QiYlY5So 2008: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hOuy4vSNNE 2012: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qLfqC3kX_U ->

Rookersh posted:I love Driver San Francisco for this. It's perfect, I'll never get tired of jumping supercars off of ramp trucks. The Burnout series is like a poster child for this line of thinking. Why do you get nitrous from driving against traffic? Why does slamming cars into roadside blockers launch them into the air? Why hasn't anyone cracked down on the massive dozens-of-car pile-ups orchestrated by Crash FM? Who cares! Just drive fast and have some fun!

Bulletstorm is a game in which you can slide 10 feet, kick a guy in the face and send him careening into a wall of spikes. There is also a section in the game where you basically control mecha-godzilla.

Oh man, I don't think I've ever had as much fun with an FPS since I played Bulletstorm. There's so much right with that game, the leash and slide were perfect tools for closing the distance between you and your targets, and finding new ways to kill people was always fun. I just wish it had more weapons, even if the cannonball was a bit of a miss. Also https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlg8gdfmWgA It takes some good writing chops to make dialogue like this work.
