What does everyone have planned for the final game they'll play this year? I'll probably just choose something arbitrarily on New Year's Eve.

I won't have time for video games on NYE but I'll probably finish up my PC run of DaS2 finally. I beat it on PS3 when it came out but for some reason I could just never get into it the way I got into DeS or DaS. I know there was kind of a lovely argument about the quality of DaS2 recently in the other thread but there it is, I don't think it's as good.

Don't you get that too good to be true vibe? A good 3rd person shooter with loot mechanics, a persistent open world, insane graphics, AND it's all online? Even if they pulled it all off, they'd pack it with non cosmetic microtransactions.

Revengeance probably works just fine on its own, but it's better if you know MGS.

If you can deal with 2 you can deal with 4. A lot of the cinematics are front loaded, but I believe there are still fewer than there are in 2. Also, it sets up Revengeance.

But yeah if it turns out you don't enjoy playing them obviously just skip to Revengeance and cut the poo poo out of some robots.

Edit: for clarification 3 is the best MGS but it contributes the least to enjoyment of Revengeance imo which is why I didn't mention it.

What's the difference between a character action game and an action game?

Character action is a pretty loose term but you usually use it for the type of game where you run around hitting XXY and poo poo to do a combo. Virtually always third person behind the back or over the shoulder. Can include puzzles and platforming but it doesn't have to, I normally see it applied to games that focus on combat. Devil May Cry, God of War, and Bayonetta are canonical examples.

To tell the truth I don't think there was a clean and satisfying way to resolve it all. Cutting the Gordian knot in this case is just blowing up the world or something.

That's Kojima's own fault for writing a story that insane and contrived but that's not a worthwhile criticism now since that's kind of the thing that makes the story fun.

I got the Heretic/Hexen bundle while it was on sale and I'm really enjoying Heretic. It's basically a well-made fantasy doom wad. Hexen, on the other hand, is total garbage. The gameplay is basically wandering around lovely maps with boring enemies and only a couple of crap weapons looking for switches, then aimlessly poking around trying to figure out what the switch changed, which is often in a different map entirely. Am I missing something or are the Hexen games just awful?

I still like Hexen but the modern day consensus is that Hexen sucks. Heretic is just Doom with a wizard skin so of course it owns now and forever.

Why would I want to get to the end of a poo poo game and hope it turns out better when I can play a better game (any of the previous SS, including 2) and experience the end state right from the start?

There's a point where something stops being a parody and starts being what you're parodying, and I think it's about the time you're forced to do lovely unfun things for no real reason.

There's 3 sorta crappy levels at the beginning. That's basically it. They're not nightmarishly bad, just a minor bummer. You don't have to play the game, I don't think it was super amazing, just don't mislead people. It's absolutely a Serious Sam game by the end.

For what it's worth, in coop on the difficulty where the enemies are invisible, even those first few levels are kinda fun.

Since you're just grabbing video, it doesn't really matter whether the game is new or old(unless they seriously streamed 320x240 video for PSX I guess), only the actual pace of the game. One frame links are as impossible streaming Street Fighter 2 as they are streaming SF4 Ultra. I have no idea if either of those are available for streaming, just an arbitrary example.

It does work, but you'd never mistake it for running the game locally.

My first guess would be sweatshop workers in the third world or no one at all in the case of some publishers.

Your standard QA guy has no qualifications, just any guy you'd see working at Chipotle or whatever. A buddy of mine actually started as a lowly QA guy and worked up to producer at a well known studio but I understand that to be an exception. He had no prior experience in any tech oriented job and has no experience coding or anything that would make him especially suited to QA software.

There's also computerized testing of games, so places will employ engineers to create tools that can execute certain kinds of tests.
