Regulations also try to prevent pieces of car from slicing up spectators and bringing lawsuits down on the series. Any goon these days can get a 600hp engine from a manufacturer that will last tens of thousands of miles. Open formula these days is either a dangerous situation or a technical cap where millions of dollars are spent for very tiny advantages because everything is already known.

He's not a guy who is quick over a lap or something and just can't do tire management where winning a race might show him what kind of patience is needed. He is just not a good race car driver and is there on name.

Philadelphia Auto Show lol.

But for real that probably wasn't an IndyCar run display. Which I guess you could argue is dumb in and of itself, they really should do displays at auto shows. But it all costs money.

This is how it always is at auto shows. Manufacturers bring race cars from series they participate in but they aren't going to advertise the series itself, its just for cool race car factor. Like little kids that tug their dads over don't give a gently caress about WEC or Indycar or whatever.

To be fair though that's more of a by product of good NASCAR teams sticking with their driver for championship reasons and only terrible teams bringing on specialists for the longest time. Even then the specialist getting a 3rd place would be the highest finish by a long shot for the poo poo team all year.

Little Al only claimed one win on his way to the 1997 title, but in 23 attempts, he finished in the top ten 16 times, and only had three DNFs. That consistency was what won him his third Indycar title, despite the fact that teammates Paul Tracy and Ayrton Senna were usually faster than him on the track.

I was wondering if the Chevy kit might start to comeback to the Honda in higher temperatures, then Power goes out and runs a 1:07.5 on fresh tires.

Were about a half second off the track record (done right after the track had been diamond ground), will be interesting to see if we get there on race weekend.

e: Pruett just pointed out that all the laps today are on blacks, and the track record was obviously on Reds...

I feel really bad for Chevy, Honda just has so much more experience with this kind of thing.

My pop's team had just tested Indy in April to set a baseline for Honda/Tasman. They had 'The Package'... Honda/Reynard/Firestone. But Honda didn't want to try to put another car in the 500 because of the number of entries, and generally wanting to focus all on Tasman after the '94 disaster. In testing, they set times that would have been on the front row, and my dad lobbied for days to get Honda to let them enter. Honda wouldn't do it... and then Scott Goodyear had that whole pacecar incident and Honda lost their first win.

My dad is still mad about it.

Should have gone to Japan and got really drunk with them.

People sue for pain and suffering, because if you have a skull fracture you can ha've brain damage and need to learn how to walk again etc. That's a lot of lost wages. Even if insurance covers it you can bet with 100% certainty that the insurer companies lawyers have already settled out of court with IndyCar to cover the cost of the procedure. It's professional though and wouldn't be in the news (so as not to damage either companies reputation one way or another)

the vast majority of non-race people I speak with that own sports cars don't give a poo poo and would rather watch football

I think this is part of the problem. 20 years ago sporty models offered by manufacturers would output 150-200hp. These days you can get 400 hp without breaking the bank, and 600+ hp is offered for enthusiasts. I think this really strips away a lot of mystique of race cars.

Cars used to squeak, rattle, and drive like scary poo poo at 90, now at on empty road you can easily accidentally go 110 without even noticing its happening.
