Actually, how is PP perceived in the general American public before this 'scandal' came out? I've only heard about the vehement anti-abortionists protesting outside abortion clinics, but PP isn't just abortion clinic, yeah?

Yeah "3% of clinic visits are for abortion services" is the figure they always point to. The rest is medical screenings, counseling, contraceptive services... I've done patient escorting for them a few times and while I certainly never inquired about someone's reason for their visit, the few who volunteered their reasoning claimed they were there for free preventative exams and the like. Make of that what you will.

And I was curious about the perception, so I looked into it: http://today.yougov.com/news/2015/07/23/planned-parenthood-still-liked-most-americans/
In March 2014, 55% held a favorable opinion. After the scandal, 52%. I think most Americans have made up their minds about the abortion debate, those views correspond to their views on PP, and the ACORN-esque video merely played into whatever their beliefs already were, for better or worse.

And the retort to that completely unsourced conservative blogpost is that only 10% of Planned Parenthood patients receive an abortion. http://www.factcheck.org/2011/04/planned-parenthood/

Sorry you're too cool to feel a smidgen of regret for the vaporization or deadly irradiation of 200,000 men, women, & children by your own representative government less than a lifetime ago, and on this very day. Maybe also read some modern scholarship about the late Pacific war instead of relying on 11th Grade U.S. History: 1865-Present before letting everyone know how edgy and wrong you are.
I just cannot stand the aloof bitching about "liberal guilt." Someone forced me to confront the reality of my national history instead of pretending "it wasn't my fault" is some sort of salve for the past. :qq:

I decided not to derail as much as I'd planned but rest assured that everything you have gleaned from Wikipedia and your social studies teacher is not analysis and is soundly rejected by modern scholars, who recognized Japan was utterly, ruinously defeated and could not have continued fighting let alone kill FOUR MILLION OF ARE BOYS

Please read a book, or maybe listen to literally every major Allied commander (Eisenhower, Feller, Lemay, King, Halsey, Nimitz, even MacArthur). Every single one of those men believed the war was over and the bombs had nothing to do with securing victory. Actually: You are right and Supreme Allied Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower is an idiot. Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz doesn't know a goddamn thing about the war he conducted and won.

Could you please provide any kind of evidence instead of just saying "well, anyone whose smart agrees with me, and if you don't you must be dumb" in long form?

yeah sure :effort:

Admiral Leahy, WH Chief of Staff & Advisor - "[T]he use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender"

Admiral Nimitz - "The Japanese had, in fact, already sued for peace before the atomic age was announced to the world with the destruction of Hiroshima and before the Russian entry into the war;" "The atomic bomb played no decisive part, from a purely military standpoint, in the defeat of Japan;" "the decision to employ the atomic bomb on Japanese cities was made on a level higher than that of the Joint Chiefs of Staff."

Admiral Halsey, 3rd Fleet Commander - "The first atomic bomb was an unnecessary experiment ... It was a mistake to ever drop it... [the scientists] had this toy and they wanted to try it out, so they dropped it ... It killed a lot of Japs, but the Japs had put out a lot of peace feelers through Russia long before"

Admiral King, Fleet Admiral - "I didn't like the atom bomb or any part of it"

General Arnold, General of the Air Force - "The Japanese position was hopeless even before the first atomic bomb fell ... It always appeared to us that, atomic bomb or no atomic bomb, the Japanese were already on the verge of collapse"

Maj-Gen Lemay, 21st Bomber Command - "The war would have been over in two weeks without the Russians entering and without the atomic bomb"

Gen MacArthur - [Via former Pres. Hoover ] "MacArthur said [my belief peace had been imminent] was correct and that we would have avoided all of the losses, the Atomic bomb, and the entry of Russia into Manchuria;" [statement to editor of Saturday Review]'The war might have ended weeks earlier, he said, if the United States had agreed, as it later did anyway, to the retention of the institution of the emperor"

Eisenhower - literally dozens of statements, including "it wasn't necessary to hit them with that awful thing;" "I voiced to him my grave misgivings, first on the basis of my belief that Japan was already defeated and that dropping the bomb was completely unnecessary, and secondly because I thought that our country should avoid shocking world opinion by the use of a weapon whose employment was, I thought, no longer mandatory as a measure to save American lives"

See also, suggesting a criminal/terrorist might have been motivated by Christian extremism is an unacceptable attack on religious freedom, but intrusive surveillance of all Muslims all the time is just good policy.

These three refer to the PRC's territorial claim over the South China Sea, if that were not obvious. The chopping block is UNCLOS, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which China is ostensibly violating. China is arguing the islands are within its "Nine-Dotted Line," a unilateral declaration of territorial ownership over the maritime region asserted by the Republic of China in '47 and "inherited" by the PRC. There are earlier and also-contentious claims from Yuan and Ming-dynasty maps. These claims are disputed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, etc

Scarborough Shoal is one of the more minor sandbar chains, less discussed than the Spratly or Paracell Islands.

But this isn't just a psycho cartoon, it's the political reference point and fervent belief of millions of living, breathing, voting human beings!

I don't know if they straight up want a war or what. Like, this whole time they just thought "gently caress a treaty, it's some trick, the only way to deal with these savages is to kill them" and then danced around it for 15 years? It's too depressing to think about :(

The whole thing behind the blank space, which has been touched on in this thread by smarter people than myself, is that it HAS to be a blank space around a disembodied uterus. They have to completely isolate the fetus from the woman it grows inside, because they have to completely isolate the issue of abortion from the concerns of women.

Either it's intentionally dodging the women's-rights arguement , or it's an extremely telling insight to their psychology. Probably both
