It helped that Colbert added the "Let's just do poo poo that I think would be cool if I had a TV show" like the green screen challenge and Guitarmageddon. Though he and the writers did ultimately manage to give the character enough substance to last for a while.

The Nightly Show is occasionally funny but it has a real hacky vibe, like they're often taking the easy route. The "Psycho Hillary" bit from a few nights back was kind of embarassing, even SNL's Hillary Clinton gags feel more on-point.
