This is the part where someone usually writes a really long OP talking up the show and summarizing the previous season's events. But gently caress that this year. We're taking a minimalist approach and being lazy in the true spirit of The Gallaghers. And anyway Showtime has produced a video that sums everything up way better than anyone else could have. Take a peek right here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWgUJ_Ziw_Q What else do you need to know about this year? Well Dermot Mulroney and Dichen Lachman are playing big parts this season and Emily Bergl is now part of the main cast. That means more Sammi (and by extension more Chuckie). And I think we can all agree that more Sammi and Chuckie is going to be fun. Now that we've got that out of the way. Let's get this thread started.

Watched the first episode despite telling myself I wouldn't. Funny stuff. Seems way more upbeat in tone than last season, though they'd be hard-pressed to match that level of gloom again. And any scene with Frank & Chuckie = gold.

I loving lost it in the youtube version where they had to censor out Sheila's entire bed scattered with sex toys. The whole screen was just one giant blur. Fun episode, and yeah I'm looking forward to at least half a season of levity before it inevitably comes crashing down into more serious stuff.

I hope they go back a bit lighter this season. s4 was good, but so much more consistently dark. I mean the show's never been happiness and puppies, but it seems like its been getting darker and darker the longer it goes. Like it managed to find a place even darker than "mom tried to kill herself on thanksgiving"

Yay, it's back! Can't wait to get home and watch. When is Emmy Rossum actually going to get a good role in a major Hollywood movie so the world can see how amazing she is?

Great start to the season. I like the levity after so much heaviness last season. Obviously poo poo is gonna hit the fan sooner or later, buy for now it's great to see everyone back and (for the most part) in a good place. I've got a bad feeling about Ian this season. They've been building his instability for a while now, and we got a taste of it blowing into full blown bed-ridden depression last season, so it can/will only get worse from here. Also, it'd be really cool for Fiona to have a relationship that doesn't blow up in her face, but with Jimmy/Steve out there, you know we'll see that sort of thing occur. Who knows though? Maybe not-Jeffery Dean Morgan will be a cool dude throughout.

I'm pissed about that, I was really interested to see Morgan in this show. I think he would have played the scruffy ex-addict exceptionally.

Kinda sick of me to say but yeah, Shameless is pretty good but a little slow until you wait for the shoe to drop sometimes and wait for everything to get really dark before everyone finds their way to climb out again. But the lighter moments are nice especially since last season was so dark.

The great thing about Shameless, for me, is that I still don't have a loving clue if it's more drama or a very dark comedy (with the exception of the more explicitly dramatic S4). It's emotionally crushed me AND made me poo poo myself laughing at various points. It's loving gold.xcore posted:When is Emmy Rossum actually going to get a good role in a major Hollywood movie so the world can see how amazing she is? Also this.

Also holy gently caress, Liam, Debbie, and Carl grew UP. Also was hoping Frank's "project" would last all season and be this continual source of mystery. Shameless is a show that does horrible things to its characters and then makes those horrible things funny. Like Monica. Like Vi's fertility issues. Like poor Sheila in general. \/\/ I completely forgot about that until it was mentioned. Poor loving Sheila, she's had nothing but poo poo in her life and just had the Gallaghers thrust upon her. A borderline crazy daughter, a downs syndrome asian grandson, a sex addict ex who was dating her daughter, and then there's Frank. The worst thing is, Frank is probably the one person that cares most about her. Dr Jankenstein fucked around with this message at 12:21 on Jan 12, 2015 |

BodyMassageMachine posted:I've got a bad feeling about Ian this season. They've been building his instability for a while now, and we got a taste of it blowing into full blown bed-ridden depression last season, so it can/will only get worse from here. It wasn't just full blown depression: he's displaying classic Bipolar symptoms. This past episode where they showed him having lots of random sex is actually an indicator of BPD for many sufferers (the show did reference this but many people don't know how common this is). If they stick to the standard symptoms, I predict we'll see him start spending money extravagantly too. More highs and lows too which is the MOST common thing. Also the bit where Mickey doesn't want him to take meds is a typical reaction. The BPD person and their partners/friends often worry about treatment turning the person into somebody else, when in fact what it normally should do is prevent the random sex/shopping sprees, crazy highs, and bedridden lows. BPD people also sometimes are more prone to taking on "big changes" without warning. Stuff like radically changing their appearance one day without warning, or deciding to take a vacation abroad 4 hours before actually getting on a plane. (Or running away and joining the army or maintaining a double life as a club kid -- things the character has done). *Disclaimer: different people with BPD have different symptoms and not ALL BPD sufferers do the sex/shopping thing.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the gentrification subplot that is quietly being inserted into the season, with the realtors and the yoga studio and such. That could lead to some pretty interesting stuff.

The promos for it that the channel's been airing are all about the gentrification sublplot. And yeah, I can see Ian straight up refusing to spend money extravigently, because that was the one Manica thing that always hosed over the family, and I can see him going "I'm not bipolar, I'm not mom, i'm good!" while displying literally every other bipolar symptom. This is a kid that got kicked out of the army for trying to steal a helicopter while manic. I missed a bunch of s4, i take it Vi finally got knocked up? And what the hell happened to Jody, he was the one person that actually uncondintionaly cared about Sheila.

I think my favorite thing about this show is its threads are always anemic; fewer chances a goon will ruin it with gooniness. I'm looking forward to seeing how Lip's story progresses. It looks like he's finally starting to look forward to a better future: applying to be an RA next semester, trying to avoid his scumbag friends from the 'hood, etc.

I'm curious about Lip too, but I'm not sure where they're going with him. It seems he's rejecting a lot of his old lifestyle and his neighborhood, certainly with good reason, but I'm not entirely sure what the train segment was supposed to convey other than a kind of growing elitism because there was nothing inherently bad about the people he was riding the train with. Maybe I'm giving it too cynical a read though.

So can we get some predictions of how things are going to turn to poo poo next season? It's all pretty obvious I guess but I want to talk about this show. - Ian goes of the rails - Mickey fucks with the wrong people and gets the poo poo beaten out of him - Or he just gets caught by the cops - Lip throws away his future again by either reverting, or trying to resist old ways but gets caught in a big misunderstanding when he tries to do the right thing but it looks like he isn't. - Frank sells the house (is that possible at this point?) - Would they do something awful with V and Kev like showing V not to be cut out for motherhood and accidently dropping/poisoning/burning one of her kids? - Debbie's hormones make her do something stupid. Knocked up? - Fiona has more boyfriend/Jimmy troubles
