I really should watch the drat thing myself and form my own opinion (rather than get reactions from the anti-CA crowd via Twitter like I did), but I'm not in the mood. The only thing I want to say is that I've seen the word "scam" thrown around, but I think that's the wrong word. Given what Lupa has said about the need to constantly refilm this thing, and the lack of updates via the crowdfunding website, and just the stories of how poorly run the whole thing is, I think "incompetence" is a better fit. And what really gets me is how simple some of this stuff would be to address. COMMUNICATION guys; seriously, they could have avoided so much poo poo if they had just talked to their producers/employees regularly, and we might not see some of the producers turning so sour on the whole thing. It's disappointing and frustrating that the Walkers/Michaud can't get the fundamentals right. Now for some new poo poo. I've been on a "magic special" kick for a while. While going through some of the David Copperfield TV specials, I found this guy's channel of reviews of magic specials: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=user?maxwellsmagicreviews They aren't very good. It's a lot of "play the clip (in its entirety in some cases!) , cut to reviewer making a comment, repeat". I think you could do so much more with these specials--Copperfield had at least 15 TV specials across three decades, and it would be fascinating to trace his evolution as a magician/performer. Maybe I should be the one doing it, rather than waiting for someone else to. I could probably put in a better effort than Maxwell here :P.

The Flame-Cheap Trick for me. A hair ballad. A poo poo genre for a poo poo poster I suppose. Not gonna lie, it seems like Linkara is putting some effort into his fanfic/movie. It's amazing what you can do when there are characters that are not just "reviewer in a new hat" and are played by actual other people. It makes this story about a comic reviewer saving the Universe from extradimensional gods with his gun powered by a dead girls soul more authentic, don't you think?

Nothing too elaborate: [2015 Adam Sandler movie that got an epic ten-minute review/rant from "MovieBob Reviews" on YouTube] with the answer PIXELS. Your opinion on the word "epic" may vary. It was part of a "worst of 2015" theme he did. Not the first time I've seen a nerd culture reference in an indie crossword either. The AV Club Crossword had references to Anita Sarkeesian a while back, and Adam Baldwin in Gamer Gate context within the last year. One of the ways they can keep things current compared to the New York Times. I really just need to get a crossword/puzzle thread going here. Would PYF be appropriate, or would that fall under Games? As for that story you mention, I know a few of the facts and I have to wonder how the hell it got twisted into "stealing a house". Jay O posted:I'm not offended by you at all! Just Lordkat. I'm glad other people watch the video and have reactions to it so I don't have to. So are we all the Nostalgia Critic now? I don't know if I'd be up for that. Jay O posted:So of all the dozens upon dozens of women he wronged (stories like mine from TGWTG, being a part of Gamergate, and even literally molesting a woman on camera), the only "woman" he bothered to apologize to is the one he found out was a man. Go gently caress yourself, Jason. I really have to wonder how many people who get into a dogpile don't think of the targets as actual people. Or maybe they think of them as people, but distort what they actually say or do to justify what they are doing as right. I'd guess that people don't see what they are doing as wrong ("It's not harassment, it's criticism!") or as hurtful, and the distance allowed by the internet makes it easier to do. There's probably a whole bunch of studies on this sort of thing, or there will be in the near future. Not to mention the effect of having a group of people around you on your individual behavior. Video games themselves might not have direct influence on behavior, but I'd have to wonder what effects the community around video games would have, good and bad. Again, probably already studies or there will be studies in the future. Still Jake, I want to thank you and Zac; your writing on geek culture and how people conflate criticism of something they like with criticism of themselves helped me to think about how I might do that, and how to separate the two. Not to mention how you guys and the Chez Apocalypse crew helped get me more aware of social justice issues and how not to be a shithead online. CONTENT: So I was on a magic special binge last year, especially when it came to the David Copperfield TV specials. I started reading up on David in general and how the specials were put together, and I learned a bit about the team that helped Copperfield pull off his illusions. And lo and behold, a few weeks ago I found out Shark Jumping did an episode on them: HOHO MAGIC (Warning: Doug face in the first couple of minutes) They basically argue that most of the specials were solid, and that the "shark jumping" point came with his last special, Tornado of Fire, and the rise of street magicians David Blaine and Criss Angel. The special has a bunch of moments where a 40 year-old magician tries to be hip, a few "magic on the street" segments, and a finale where Copperfield risks his life by standing in the center of the titular (and admittedly very dangerous looking) tornado of fire. For about ten seconds. MAGIC~ So yeah, he was definitely aping Blaine's style with the special. It wasn't all terrible though; the "Portal" illusion he does at the end where he and an audience member "teleport" to Hawaii was cool. And it didn't really hurt him too much in the end; he stopped for a while, bought a chain of islands in the Bahamas, and he's still apparently performing in Vegas to this day. He's not in the public eye as much, but he shows up on occasion. There's a little bit of interesting stuff about where the illusions came from, including how many were originally done by Doug Henning. I'd like to see someone approach magic specials with an eye towards presentation and how it's all put together along with entertainment value, but unfortunately all we really have is this guy. at its finest. This other guy, Alexo does it better at least, but there's only the one. I need more dammit. Sorry for the magic , but it's nice to see a bit of a resurgence with Penn and Teller: Fool Us on the air.

Really, what on earth could be making you feel genuine anger for a man who you will likely never meet and whose actions and deeds do nothing to affect you? Like, if you think he's a jerk, don't watch his videos. Seems strange that every time one of these critics upsets the thread, it's all "what a lovely human being" "what a loving sociopath" and other such nonsense. Get a grip. Hi Jason. Seriously though, his actions have actually caused people who post here problems, both directly and through his fanbase. Read the posts Jay O made a few pages back for an example. And it's less anger for him and more anger at him. And it's not just him either, there's at least a few people who try to make poo poo for Internet critics just because they "go full SJW" or something. Not to mention the people who obsess over every action someone makes, looking for the smallest gently caress up to try and blast them over. It's creepy as hell.

@Scholar: In the past, LK has said lovely things to people, like telling Spoony to kill himself on his livestream. Not to his face, but there is video of him saying it. He has also come down on people because of their "SJWness", like Lindsay Ellis, Toddintheshadows, Jay O (who posts in this thread), and a few people involved in Gamergate. Now, he may have engaged these people directly on Twitter, and this by itself might not seem like much. However, his fans and followers may then follow his lead, and come down on these people as well, leading to a bunch of harassment and other poo poo. You would have to talk to the people who got harassed to get the full story, but Jay O gave an example a few pages back in this thread. I haven't heard if any of this has escalated into physical incidents, but LK has made threats to go to cons with a few of these critics he doesn't like. Nothing seems to have been followed through on yet, but you never know. Not to mention there is video of the incident with the girl around. I can't comment on what actually happens in it, but she apparently tells it differently, and LK had her on the show to give her side of the story. I have not seen either, and I do not plan to. Apologies for the lack of direct links, but mobile is not fun for url hunting. Here's hoping I don't get accused of being obsessive myself, eh :P

It seems like the "I don't want to see this movie" thing James said is getting lumped it with the more virulent "robocops ruined my childhood" response from the "full gamer" circles. I didn't really get that was his reason from the video, but the large, really negative response that came before set the tone/framework, mostly good/bad. It's honestly not going to affect me whether or nor he sees the film, and I haven't made any plans to go see it myself. Lack of attachment to the franchise I think. But drat, the firestorm surrounding it is hard to look away from.

I'm going to second this video. The ending may hit a little close to home, but it's a good and worthwhile message. The whole "vile heart" thing he talks about seems to be in a lot of places these days, and we need to remember that it doesn't have to be the only way. This poo poo exists, and it can be draining or maddening or depressing, but there are ways to make things better for others, from the personal to the political. Thanks for sharing poparena.
